Saito, H.; & Inoi, S., 筆頭著者, Despite the rising interest in the practice of formative assessment (FA) in language classrooms, research has rarely examined the factors that contribute to differential use of FA. The present study adopts an explanatory sequential mixed-method design to examine differences in FA use among Japanese junior and senior high school EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teachers. Based on Wiliam's (2010) model of FA strategies, quantitative analysis of a large-scale survey classified 727 participants into three levels (high, middle, and low) of FA use. In the qualitative follow-up phase, four selected survey respondents were interviewed and observed. The results indicated varying degrees of FA use among teachers, suggesting that the four FA variables (intentions, methods, purposes, and feedback) derived from Wiliam's model succeeded in identifying differential degrees of FA use., Routledge

Saito; H., This study examined the effects of training on peer assessment and comments provided regarding oral presentations in EFL ( English as a Foreign Language) classrooms. In Study 1, both the treatment and control groups received instruction on skill aspects, but only the treatment group was given an additional 40-minute training on how to rate performances. The results of the correlation difference analyses show no significant differences between the treatment and control groups, but the three instructors are misfitting, presumably because the frame of reference is set by the majority of student data. In the second study, the treatment groups received long training. Again, there are no significant correlation differences between the treatment and control groups; however, all the instructors are not misfitting, which indicates that the frame of reference in the data improved in Study 2. Analyses of comments reveal that the treatment groups are superior in both quality and quantity of comments. Along with a meta-analytic summary, it is argued that peer assessment is a robust system in which instruction on skill aspects may suffice to achieve a certain level of correlation with the criterion variable (instructor), but training may enhance student comments and reduce misfitting raters., Sage

Saito; H., This paper proposes a framework for goal-driven pair drills. What distinguishes these drills from ordinary controlled drills lies in the motivating characteristics such as clear goals, outcomes, and communicativeness. With these features present, goal-driven pair drills encourage learners to process multiple layers of language skill aspects. A brief review of the relevant theoretical and empirical literature underpins the rationale for this framework. Three sample activities are introduced along with the results of learner surveys. High school students who experienced these drills showed positive attitudes more than university students did. They also identified some benefits and challenges in these drills. © The Author 2008.
