和栗伸伍; 荻野翔真; 北嶋康樹; 後藤哲雄, Corresponding,Light traps with sticky sheets are effective tools for controlling and monitoring stored-product pests. Cigarette beetle is an important storage pest. Light attracts both beetle sexes; often, single light traps are deployed in a large area, because they are larger and costlier than pheromone traps (which capture only males). Cigarette beetles occur in aggregates in areas with many obstacles, suggesting that a single trap is insufficient. To improve trapping efficacy at a low cost, we compared the number of trapped beetles among one, two or four small light traps (8 W) versus a single large light trap (50 W), attached to the wall(s) of a single darkroom (7.2×3.2×2.4 m, 25–30°C). Per treatment, 500 laboratory-reared adult beetles were released in the middle of the room. Half of the treatments had an opaque plastic wall (2×2 m) in the center of the room. After 6 hours, the mean number/trap of beetles captured with sticky sheets (7 replications) was 46.4, 39.4, 57.1 and 88.2, for one large and one, two and four small light traps, respectively. The obstacle did not affect these numbers. Hence, single lights trapped as many beetles, and more beetles were captured when more small lights were present.

守田詩穂; 田辺堅太郎; 田原雄一郎; 平尾 素一; 北嶋 康樹, Corresponding, In order to evaluate the magnitude of insect invasion indoors under various light conditions, we compared light trap catches; one was set up outdoors, and the other was set up indoors in such a way that it did not leak its light to the outside. The ratio of the number of insects invaded that indoors to those captured with the outdoor light trap was used to evaluate invasion level because a positive correlation was found between them, and the number of insects that invaded indoors increased with the increase in those captured with the outdoor light trap. With a 10 cm open slit in the window, the ratio when both the room lights and the indoor light trap were turned on (4.1%) did not significantly differ from the ratio when only the room lights were turned on (5.7%). The ratio when neither the room lights nor the indoor light trap were turned on (0.6%) did not significantly differ from the ratio when only the indoor light trap was turned on (0.5%). Furthermore, the ratios were significantly higher under the former two conditions (4.1 and 5.7%) than under the latter two conditions (0.6 and 0.5%). 北嶋康樹; 平尾素一; 高橋朋也, Lead, Influence of pheromone trap (New Serrico[R!○]) location on the capture of cigarette beetle, Lasioderma serricorne, was studied in the feed processing plant in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan in 2003. Traps on the walls captui ed more beetles than traps apart from the wall. Traps on the 'web' of H-shape steel captured more beetles than 'flange'. But this result was not based on the difference between structure of 'web' and 'flange'. Because the areas of 'web' were larger than those of 'flange', and the number of beetles captured was not significantly different between traps placed on imitation models of 'web' and 'flange' made by same area (1,680 cm^2) cardboards. Thus, it was indicated that the pheromone traps placed on the wide flat area could capture more beetles than the trap located in space or on the smaller flat area, and this may be explained by the behavior of the cigarette beetle: it approaches the pheromone trap by flying and makes landing near the trap, and after landing it enters to the trap by crawling., The Japan Society of Medical Entomology and Zoology
