  • The Unit-Structured Diagram: A Tool for Effective Professional Development

The diagram consists of three areas, including objectives, content, and assessment. The objectives section is an area to identify learning outcomes based on physical education national standards. In the section of content, a unit is broken down into lessons. Teachers identify what to and when to evaluate student learning in the assessment section. The workshop using this diagram is underpinned by three premises of quality professional development: active engagement, specific tasks, and collaboration.   • Japanese Physical Education Preservice Teachers' Specialized Content Knowledge
    Emi Tsuda; Phillip Ward; Yuji Ohnishi; Satoshi Yoshino, The purpose of the study was to investigate the levels of specialized content knowledge (SCK) in volleyball and basketball among preservice teachers (PSTs) in Japan. A total of 689 PSTs participated in the study. First, more years of playing experiences helped more PSTs to obtain the mature level of SCK. However, even with more than six years of playing experiences, only less than half (volleyball=33.33%; basketball=46.66%) of PSTs scored the mature level SCK. Second, obtaining teaching/coaching experiences helped more PSTs to have the mature level of SCK. Finally, more PSTs who played higher than at the prefecture-level scored the mature level of SCK than PSTs with lower play levels. However, even at the highest playing level category (i.e., the national level or above), less than half of PSTs scored a mature level of SCK. Overall, playing and/or teaching/coaching experiences have some level of positive influence on developing SCK. However, even with those experiences, many PSTs still scored the immature level SCK.   • Validity and Reliability of a Volleyball Common Content Knowledge Test for Japanese Physical Education Preservice Teachers
    Emi Tsuda; Phillip Ward; Satoshi Yoshino; Tomoko Ogiwara; Yaohui He; Yuji Ohnishi, Common content knowledge (CCK) includes the knowledge of (a) rules, safety, and etiquette, (b) techniques, and (c) tactics of movement forms (e.g., sports, dance and yoga; Ward, 2009) and has been established as critical knowledge for teachers to provide quality instruction. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of a volleyball CCK test of preservice teachers in Japan. The test was developed using three steps: (a) content experts developed the questions, (b) ten experienced secondary school physical education teachers established face and content validity, and (c) the test was pilot tested with eight preservice teachers to secure concurrent validity. Following this, the test was given to 126 physical education preservice teachers. Data were analyzed using Rasch modeling (Rasch, 1980). The data fit the model for 29 of 30 questions. The analysis provides evidence to support the validity and reliability of the volleyball CCK test for Japanese physical education preservice teachers. The test can be confidently used to assess the knowledge of preservice teachers and the effectiveness of teacher education programs., International Journal of Sport and Health Science

  • 休み時間における児童の運動遊びに繋がる体育授業の探索::経験を有する児童及び教員へのインタビューを通して
    吉野 聡; 金川 瑞希; 飯島 悠輔; 杉江 拓也; 下山田 克也; 稲葉 敬之, Nowadays in Japan, it is needed that physical education classes are designed to have an impact not only during the classes themselves, but also outside of class, such as in the recess period. The purpose of this study was to explore of features of physical education classes that impacted on pupils' physical play during school recess. Adopting qualitative methods, we carried out a semi-structured interview on 13 4th to 6th grade students (7 boys and 6 girls) and 9 teachers (5 males and 4 females) who had experienced elementary school physical education classes. The selected students all had experience of physical play after the physical education classes, while the selected teachers all had experience of watching the pupils during physical play after having taught them. Analysis was based on the assessment model reported by Pieron and Cheffers (1998). We found that 4 themes in the program, 2 themes in the learning environment and 4 themes in the learning outcome were feature of physical education classes that were related to physical play during school recess., 一般社団法人 日本体育学会

  • 学習者の自己評価による球技の類型と各型に位置づく類似の行為
    吉野 聡; 加藤 敏弘; 篠田 明音; 斎藤 拓真; 宇井 俊介; 飯塚 明彦; 佐藤 竜也,   The purpose of this study was to examine the various categories of games and the similarities of behavior in each category, based on data analysis of university students' self-evaluation of selected games. Data were collected by questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire was administered to 239 (111 male and 128 female) students and asked about their overall evaluation of each selected game, whereas the interview was conducted with 17 (7 male and 10 female) students to ascertain the reasons why they thought they would be suited to the selected games. Cluster analysis was conducted on the questionnaire data to clarify the game classification quantitatively, and qualitative analysis was conducted on the interview data to clarify the similarities of behavior in each game category. The results reconfirmed that the invasion, net, and striking/fielding categories of games were classified similarly to those in several previous studies. In addition, several similarities of behavior in the game categories were revealed.

  • The effects of a teaching game approach on kendo skill acquisition
    Kikuchi Kou; Yoshino Satoshi; Shibata Kazuhiro; Sato Yutaka; Ui Shunsuke; Saito Takuma, Corresponding,   Combative sports are characterized by skills in rapidly switching from offense to defense, and it is considered difficult to acquire such skills. The purpose of this study was to design a combative sport (Kendo) class unit and examine its effectiveness. Two teaching materials involving a form of exaggeration (game modification) were developed to aid better understanding. The participants were 39 7th grade students (19 boys and 20 girls), one student teacher, and another teacher who had more than 20 years teaching experience. Both teachers were Kendo rank holders. Eleven physical education classes were conducted as the experimental Kendo teaching unit. Qualitative and quantitative data were gathered. The qualitative data source was a journal written by the teachers, sentences written by the students on their learning sheets, comments made by students at interviews about their thoughts during Kendo training, and those made by teacher's colleagues during class observation. The quantitative data source was a motivation questionnaire for formative evaluation of physical education classes developed by Takahashi et al. (1994), and the students' game performance. The motivation questionnaire and student game performance were analyzed by descriptive statistics whereas qualitative data were analyzed by the method of SCAT (Otani, 2007). The results of this study indicated that the student's skill learning motivation and skill acquisition tended to be high, when analyzed through the students' game performance through exaggeration games and mini-games. It suggested that the approach employed in this unit was successful, and that the exaggeration games applied in the unit were effective for concurrent skill acquisition. We consider that modification of games for combative sport training should be developed more actively.

  • The relationship between the teacher's initiative and formative evaluation in physical education class

The questionnaire of 2 categories (‘determination of learning goal and content’ ‘determination of learning method’) was prepared for making clear teacher's initiative and applied to teachers who have physical education classes from 3rd to 6th grade (278 classes). And formative evaluation by Takahashi et al (1994) was applied as learning product variable.
    Main findings are as follows.
    1) ‘Determination of learning goal and content’ was divided into 4 types physical education classes. As a result of the investigation, the subjects were divided into ‘teacher-centered’ type 33.5% ‘task selected’ type 14.7% ‘task created’ type 34.2% and ‘child-centered’ type 17.6%.
    2) ‘Determination’ of learning methods' was divided into 4 types of physical education classes. As a result of the investigation, the subjects were divided into ‘direct teaching’ type 16.5% ‘direct orientated’ type 32.2% ‘indirect orientated’ type 36.6% and ‘spontaneous learning’ type 14.7%.
    3) The relations between ‘learning goal and content’ and formative evaluation were analyzed. The results revealed that ‘teacher-centered’ type of physical education classes were evaluated lowest by pupils. On the contrary, physical education classes which evaluated highest were ‘task selected’ type.
    4) The relations between ‘learning goal and content’ an formative evaluation were analyzed. The results revealed that ‘direct teaching’ type of physical education classes were evaluated lowest by pupils. On the contrary, physical education classes which evaluated highest were ‘indirect orientated’ type.   • A study on the effective teacher's feedback behavior in physical education class : mainly focusing on student's awareness of teacher's feedback and formative evaluation

Data were collected during 42 elementary school physical education classes taught by 42 teachers. In a previous study (Takahashi et al., 1996), the expression modes of teacher's feedback, especially "two-way communication", "transmittable" and "sympathetic" showed significant correlations with student's formative evaluation of physical education classes. In this study we examined the relationships between teacher's feedback and their expression modes and student's awareness of them and their formative evaluation of physical education classes. The main findings were as follows: 1) "Positive feedback", "corrective feedback" and "specific feedback" given to student's skill learning showed significant correlations with student's awareness of teacher's feedback. 2) The expression modes, especially "transmittable", "sympathetic", "expression technique" and "verbal content" showed significant correlations with student's awareness of teacher's feedback. 3) The students who were aware of having received effective advice from the teacher evaluated physical education classes significantly higher than the others.. 4) Thus, we conclude that teacher's positive and corrective feedback with a specific content aimed at student's skill learning and their desirable expression modes would be accepted as effective advice by students, leading to better learning results., Japan Society of Physical Education, Health and Sport Sciences

  • Developing an Observation Instrument of Student's Collective and Affective Behaviors in Physical Education Class
    HIRANO Tomoyuki; TAKAHASHI Takeo; HINO Katsuhiro; YOSHINO Satoshi, The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument to observe students' collective and affective behaviors in physical education class. In order to examine the effectiveness of the instrument, we analyzed the relationship between the results of the observation and students' formative evaluation. The subjects were 52 physical education classes instructed by 42 teachers in elementary school.
    Main findings were as follows.
    1) As the results of reliability test for observers, the required standard (80% of agreement) was achieved on all of observation category in the instrument.
    2) “Affirmative interpersonal relation behaviors” showed positive correlations with students' formative evaluation. On the other hand, “negative interpersonal relation behaviors” showed negative correlations with students' evaluation.
    3) “Affirmative affective behaviors” showed positive correlations with students' evaluation. But the correlations between these behaviors and the items of “interest/motivation” in students' evaluation were not so high. However, “negative affective behaviors” showed clearer negative correlations with students' evaluation.
    4) “Off task behavior” showed negative correlation with students' evaluation.
    5) Thus, it was confirmed that the observation instrument was effective to evaluate the collective and affective behaviors in physical education class. However, as it had some limitations, the efforts were required toward developing better instrument., Japanese Society of Sport Education

  • The Effects of Teacher's Interaction Behaviors and their Ways of Expression on Student's Formative Evaluation to Physical Education Class
    TAKAHASHI Takeo; UTAGAWA Yoshio; YOSHINO Satoshi; HINO Katsuhiro; FUKAMI Eiichiro; SHIMIZU Shigeyuki, The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of teacher's interaction behaviors and their ways of expression on the student's formative evaluation to physical education class. The subjects were 37 physical education classes instructed by 33 teachers of elementary school. The new observational demention containing the five categories were added on the systematic observation instrument for teacher interaction behavior. These categories were named as “interactive”, “transmittable”, “sympathetic”, “expression technique”, and “verbal content”.
    Main findings were as follows.
    1) “Questioning”, “acceptance (listening)” and “hustle” behaviors showed significant correlations with some student's evaluation items. But the relationship between “feedback” and the evaluation was not clear.
    2) “Interactive”, “transmittable”, and “sympathetic” ways of expression showed more positive relationship to the evaluation. However, “expression technique” and “verbal content” did not have the clear relationship.
    3) These results suggested that qualitative aspects of teacher's interaction behavior had more effect on the evaluation than their quantity (frequency)., Japanese Society of Sport Education
