- Measurement and Observation and Difficulties in the Teaching of Meteorological-related Items in Compulsory Education Schools: Results of a School Questionnaire Survey in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan
ITO Takashi; ABE Shin-ichiro; GUNJI Harumoto; GOTOU Kouichi; MIYAMOTO Naoki, A questionnaire survey was conducted to gain an understanding of the current situation regarding observation and measurement of meteorological items and climate variation measures at compulsory education schools in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. The results showed that: a) meteorological measurement, data storage, and disclosure have not been actively conducted in schools; b) Hyakuyo-bako—a traditional meteorological observation system—is rarely used and the maintenance is insufficient, although many elementary schools are equipped with it; c) students’ interest in meteorological topics was high but teachers felt some difficulties in teaching them; and d) measures to counter heatstroke in schools have been implemented meticulously., Japan Society of Earth Science Education

郡司晴元, The purpose of this paper is to present a method of making bone specimens in cooperation with a zoo. At the zoo, the veterinarian keeps dead animal specimens refrigerated after autopsies have been performed. The author borrows the specimens and turns them into bone specimens by heating them. During the heating process, it was found useful to put a specimen into a high-density polyethylene (HDPD) bag with water, and to keep the bag in hot water. This use of a HDPD bag helps eliminate malodors and maintains the alignment of the bones. This process has been practiced for eight years in classes at the Graduate School of Education, Ibaraki University. The benefits of the system are that graduate students experience cooperation with a zoo and are able to borrow the specimens after becoming school teachers. For its part, the zoo increases its collection of bone specimens as educational materials. Thus, the zoo, schools, and the graduate school of education effectively constitute a regional system of zoological education., Japan Society for Science Education

The BMD of Wansombo, an old female chimpanzee from Mahale, was remarkably lower than the mean of the other six younger adult female chimpanzees and categorized as osteoporosis. Posture, locomotion, and trunk-sacral anatomy of chimpanzees may have prevented fractures in Wansombo, whose BMD was below human osteoporosis criteria., SPRINGER-VERLAG TOKYO

Unfortunately morphological and osteological studies of chimpanzee skeletal remains from long-term field research projects are rare (Yasui and Takahata, 1983, an infant of P. t. schweinfurthii from Mahale mountains National Park, Tanzania; Morbeck and Zihlman, 1989, ten individuals of P. t. schweinfurthii from Gombe National Park, Tanzania; Matsuzawa et al. 1990, a young male of P. t. verus from Bossou, Guinea). This study described basic morphological and osteological information (i.e. linear measurements of skulls and dentitions, dental wear, notable pathological traits) taken from four free-ranging chimpanzee skulls (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) that were collected from the Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania. 郡司晴元, This study aimed to examine the occurrence of osteophytic upping (irregular bone formation around the vertebral bodies) and flexion of the vertebral column (wedge-shaped vertebral bodies) using measurements of Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata fuscata, 22 males and 24 females) lumbar vertebral bodies. It was assumed a priori that osteophytic lipping is reflected in the sagittal and transverse diameters of the vertebral body. In order to evaluate the flexion of the vertebral column, the angle between the cranial and caudal plateaus was measured from the lateral view.
Aged female subjects exhibited remarkable lipping. Outstanding disordered values were found particularly in sagittal diameters. The cumulation of the angles revealed the occurrence of wedge shaped vertebral bodies in the caudal lumbar region among aged male subjects. These vertebral bodies might cause hunched curvature of the vertebral column.
Those two aspects of vertebral deformation are also found in aged human skeletons. The result shows the affinity between the degenerative deformations of aged human vertebral bodies and those of aged Japanese macaques'. This affinity indicates their importance as an animal model for human aging studies., Primate Society of Japan
