  • The relationship between abilities in interpersonal relations and interpersonal motivations
    Reijirou Watanabe, Three hundred and six (306) undergraduates participated in a study that examined abilities in interpersonal relations and interpersonal motivations. Results indicated that: (1) Three interpersonal motivations underlay interpersonal attitudes, namely, other-praise acquisition, other-rejection avoidance, and relationship avoidance. (2) Abilities in interpersonal relations, such as social skills and perceived interpersonal competence, influenced relative strengths among the individual's three interpersonal motivations. High levels of abilities in interpersonal relations lead to stronger motivation to acquire praise by others. In contrast, those with low levels of abilities were motivated to avoid interpersonal relations altogether. Those in-between were motivated to avoid rejection by others., JAPAN PSYCHOL ASSOC

  • A STUDY ON STRUCTURES OF CHILDREN'S ARITHMETIC ANXIETY AND METHODS OF TEACHER'S SUPPORTS -Examination from social support-
    Reijirou Watanabe; Tatsuya Sakuma, The purpose of this study was to investigate, with elementary school 5th and 6th graders, structures of children's arithmetic anxiety and methods of teacher's supports. The results of the investigation indicated that : (1) As children's arithmetic anxiety, 4 factors (F1 : in class; F2 : failure to solution of problems; F3 :concerning the teacher; F4 : connected to surroundings) were extracted. (2) There was every possibility with matter related to children's arithmetic anxiety that the teacher practiced supports children wanted but not the amount of supports. OA gap of supports between the children's expectation from the teacher and teacher's influenced on arithmetic anxiety in girls. (4) In arithmetic anxieties that were related immediately to problem solution, children wanted the teacher's instrumental support, and the trend was stronger in children with higher arithmetic anxiety. (5) On the contrary, in arithmetic anxieties with no immediate relation with problem solution, children wanted the teacher's emotional support, and the trend was seen higher in girls., JAPANESE ASSOC EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY

  • A STUDY ON CHILDREN'S INTERPERSONAL NEGOTIATION STRATEGIES IN A HYPOTHETICAL INTERPERSONAL CONFLICT SITUATION -Effects of age, SEX, interaction with another and popularity-
    Reijirou Watanabe, The purpose of this study was to investigate in a supposed unreasonable dyadic hypothetical interpersonal conflict situation; (1) The effects of age, sex and interaction with another on interpersonal negotiation strategy; (2) Change of the effects of interaction with another on interpersonal negotiation strategy by sex and popularity. Two hundred thirty eight elementary school children, 2nd, 4th and 6th graders, were investigated by means of an interview and a questionnaire. The results of the investigation indicated that in the hypothetical unreasonable conflict situation; (1) Level of interpersonal negotiation strategy was higher in older children; (2) Level of interpersonal negotiation strategy was higher in girls; (3) Level of interpersonal negotiation strategy of pre-interaction with another was higher than one of post-interaction with another; (4) High popular children's level of interpersonal negotiation strategy was higher than low popular children's one in spite of interaction with another; (5) In both high popular children and low popular children, there was no difference on level of interpersonal negotiation strategy of pre-interaction and post-interaction with another., JAPANESE ASSOC EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY

  • The Development of Interpersonal Negotiation Strategies in Children -The relationship between social information processing and interpersonal negotiation strategies-
    Reijirou Watanabe, This study investigates: 1) The development of children's interpersonal negotiation strategies (INS) based on the theory of Selman, and 2) the possibility of predicting the level of (c) selecting specific strategy (INS) by the levels of the other 3 social information processing steps, which are (a) defining the problem, (b) generating alternative strategies, and (d) evaluating outcomes. Two hundred seventy three elementary school children, 1st to 6th graders, are investigated by means of a structured dilemma discussion interview and a questionnaire on two hypothetical dyadic interpersonal dilemmas. The results of the investigation indicate: 1) INS level is found higher in older children
