  • Hemicellulose structure, dispersibility, and emulsification stability of holocellulose nanofibers from spent coffee grounds.
    Noriko Kanai; Saori Tamura; Yuto Ito; Nako Higuchi; Yuri Ohashi; Aya Maekawa; Hana Arends; Keisei Shibata; Taka-Aki Ishibashi; Yuki Imai; Motoyuki Iijima; Izuru Kawamura, Spent coffee grounds (SCGs) are a promising source of holocellulose nanofibers (HCNF) due to their high polysaccharide content, predominantly composed of galactomannan, arabinogalactan, and cellulose. Our previous study revealed that the HCNF isolated from SCGs contains highly crystallized mannan I, which has not been reported from any other biomass, and exhibits exceptional mechanical nano-fibrillation into 2-3 nm microfibril widths. As an extension of our previous report, we explored the molecular origin of complete nano-fibrillation with respect to hemicellulose structure. We also examined the morphological dimensions of condensed dispersions, the effect of alkaline treatment on mannan, and the detailed rheological behavior of dispersions compared with redispersions obtained from freeze-dried HCNF. Additionally, emulsification performance was also investigated as a potential application. Gel-state 2D NMR analysis confirmed the presence of galactomannan and arabinogalactan in the SCG holocellulose, with β-D-glucuronic acid in arabinogalactan likely contributing to the high carboxyl content and excellent aqueous dispersibility. This resulted in condensed 5 and 10% HCNF dispersions that were completely nanofibrillated mechanically to approximately 3 nm in width and 0.7 μm in length. Alkaline treatment at room temperature decreased carboxy content and electrophoretic mobility but did not dissolve highly crystallized mannans, indicating partial removal of residual proteins and glucuronic acid in arabinogalactan. Rheological measurements of HCNFs revealed hysteresis loops at concentrations above 5%, gel-to-sol transition at higher shear strains, and overshoot in G" curves. Oil-in-water Pickering emulsions stabilized by 2% HCNFs showed excellent long-term stability up to 55% oil ratio over eight months stored at either room temperature or 40 °C.

  • Effects of Wearing Masks to Prevent Infection on Heat Disorder Risk and Thermal Comfort
    TAMURA Saori; SATSUMOTO Yayoi; TAMURA Hinako; OYA Sachie; TANAKA Hideto, Lead, In the present study, to clarify the risk of heat disorder and thermal comfort during moderate exercise while wearing a mask in a hot environment, masks to prevent infection of three different types were compared in a subjective experiment in a climatic chamber. We evaluated the materials' physical properties and the comfort-related performance of each mask. The external ear temperature of each mask was lower than the standard for a serious condition of heat disorder, indicating that each mask does not pose a significant risk of heat disorder. The particle collection efficiency of the pleated nanofiber-nonwoven mask (NF) was above 90%. The mask microclimate temperature and uncomfortable feeling of NF were lower than other masks. For moderate exercise in a hot environment, the NF was found to be the most suitable mask in terms of infection prevention and thermal comfort., The Japan Society of Home Economics

  • The Cluster Size and Change of Water Molecules in Poly(vinyl alcohol) Film by Heating
    Tamura Saori; Oono Ryo, Lead, The cluster size of water molecules in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) film was determined using the cohesive energy equation and the heat of evaporation of water. On the heating process of PVA film, the mass of evaporated water was measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and the heat of evaporation was measured by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The evaporation energy and the cluster size are closely related each other, and the size was calculated using the equation of cohesive energy which contains surface energy. As a result, the size of water cluster in 0% relative humidity (RH) film was about 13.2 molecules, 40% RH film was 6.6 molecules and 80% RH film was 3.5 molecules, respectively. The cluster size in 0% RH and 40% RH films are likely to contain errors caused by the overestimation of evaporation energy. In the film of 80% RH, the clusters of 3.5 molecules were absorbed at a ratio of one cluster per 5.3 repeating units of PVA chain. The cluster size was calculated at various temperatures in the order of evaporation. The average cluster size in 80% RH film was about 1-2 molecules on the film surface and it was about 3.5 molecules in the inside of film., The Society of Fiber Science and Technology, Japan
