茨城大学教育学部紀要(自然科学), Mar. 2015 - An ocean-floor carbonaceous sedimentary sequence in the 3.2-Ga Dixon Island Formation, coastal Pilbara terrane, Western Australia
Shoichi Kiyokawa; Shoichiro Koge; Takashi Ito; Minoru Ikehara, The Dixon Island Formation of the Pilbara terrane, Western Australia, extends from Cleaverville Beach to the Dixon Island coast, and is the only example worldwide of a coastal outcrop of a 3.2-3.1 Ga low-grade greenstone belt. The Dixon Island Formation was situated in an immature island arc setting and comprises siliceous, carbonaceous deep-water sediments that contain evidence for hydrothermal and microbial activity. The extensive outcrop along the coastline makes it possible to examine in detail the characteristics of Mesoarchean sedimentation in a hydrothermal environment. This study focuses on a continuously exposed carbonaceous, black chert succession in the central part of the northern coastline outcrop on Dixon Island. At this site, a 20-m-thick, carbonaceous, black chert sequence conformably overlies basement rocks of highly altered komatiite-rhyolite tuffs. The black chert sequence formed well-bedded black chert with carbonaceous peloidal matter and fragmented grains, and the sequence is homogeneous and finely laminated. In this sequence, evidence of low-temperature hydrothermal fluid, sediments and alteration stractures are well preserved in the lowermost section, indicating that high levels of hydrothermal activity occurred on the ocean floor during deposition. In particular, swarms of black chert veins provide evidence of post-volcanic hydrothermal activity that released organic matter and silica to the ocean. The carbonaceous peloidal textures and delta C-13(org) values of sediments located just above the basement, which hosts the vein swarms, suggest that the veins were the conduits for-hydrothermal fluid which contained organic-rich silica material and that flowed onto the seafloor to form the homogeneous carbonaceous cherts along with hydrothermal-related sediment. The delta C-13(org) values of organic matter in the black cherts range from -42 parts per thousand to -22 parts per thousand (average = -31.9 parts per thousand; n = 313). Lighter delta C-13 values (-35 parts per thousand to -42 parts per thousand) characterize carbonaceous laminated black chert located similar to 5 m above the basement, where biogenic structures (e.g. biomat bed, microfossil structures) are found, The lighter delta C-13 values might be related to methanotrophic micro-organic activity within the sediments during hydrothermal activity. In summary, we reconstructed the sedimentary environment upon a Mesoarchean hydrothermal ocean floor that was a site of microbial activity and local methanogenesis. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Zeebe, Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and climate are regulated on geological timescales by the balance between carbon input from volcanic and metamorphic outgassing and its removal by weathering feedbacks; these feedbacks involve the erosion of silicate rocks and organic-carbon-bearing rocks. The integrated effect of these processes is reflected in the calcium carbonate compensation depth, which is the oceanic depth at which calcium carbonate is dissolved. Here we present a carbonate accumulation record that covers the past 53 million years from a depth transect in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. The carbonate compensation depth tracks long-term ocean cooling, deepening from 3.0-3.5 kilometres during the early Cenozoic (approximately 55 million years ago) to 4.6 kilometres at present, consistent with an overall Cenozoic increase in weathering. We find large superimposed fluctuations in carbonate compensation depth during the middle and late Eocene. Using Earth system models, we identify changes in weathering and the mode of organic-carbon delivery as two key processes to explain these large-scale Eocene fluctuations of the carbonate compensation depth., NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP
NATURE, Aug. 2012, [Reviewed] - Effects of tides and weather on sedimentation of iron-oxyhydroxides in a shallow-marine hydrothermal environment at Nagahama Bay, Satsuma Iwo-Jima Island, Kagoshima, southwest Japan
Shoichi Kiyokawa; Tomomi Ninomiya; Tomoaki Nagata; Kazumasa Oguri; Takashi Ito; Minoru Ikehara; Kosei E. Yamaguchi, Nagahama Bay of Satsuma Iwo-Jima Island, southwest Japan, is an excellent place for studying sedimentation of iron-oxyhydroxides by shallow-marine low-temperature hydrothermal activity. Its fishing port has a narrow entrance that limits exchange of seawater between the bay and open ocean, allowing the accumulation of fine-grained precipitates of iron-bearing materials (Fe-oxyhydroxides) on the seafloor. The fishing port is usually filled with orange- to brown-colored Fe-rich water, and deposits >1.5 m thick Fe-rich sediments. To elucidate the movement and depositional processes of the Fe-rich precipitates in the bay, we conducted continuous profiling of turbidity throughout the tidal cycle and monitoring of surface water. The results showed that clear seawater entered the bay during the rising tide, and turbid colored water flowed into the ocean during the ebb tide. Neap tide was found to be an optimal condition for sedimentation of Fe-oxyhydroxides due to weak tidal currents. Storms and heavy rains were also found to have influenced precipitation of Fe-oxyhydroxides. Storm waves disturbed the bottom sediments, resulting in increased turbidity and rapid re-deposition of Fe-oxyhydroxides with an upward-fining sequence. Heavy rain carried Fe-oxyhydroxides originally accumulated in nearby beach sands to the bay. Our findings provide information on optimal conditions for the accumulation of Fe-rich sediments in shallow-marine hydrothermal settings., WILEY-BLACKWELL
ISLAND ARC, Jun. 2012, [Reviewed] - Lateral variations in the lithology and organic chemistry of a black shale sequence on the Mesoarchean seafloor affected by hydrothermal processes: The Dixon Island Formation of the coastal Pilbara Terrane, Western Australia
Shoichi Kiyokawa; Takashi Ito; Minoru Ikehara; Kosei E. Yamaguchi; Shoichiro Koge; Ryo Sakamoto, The Dixon Island Formation of the coastal Pilbara Terrane, Western Australia is a 3.2 Ga volcanicsedimentary sequence influenced by syndepositional hydrothermal activity formed in an island-arc setting. We documented lateral variations in stratigraphy, hydrothermal alteration, and biological activity recorded in the sedimentary rocks (over several kilometers), with the aim of identifying areas of biological activity and related small-scale structures. The Dixon Island Formation comprises volcaniclastics, black chert, and iron-rich chert within seven tectonic blocks. Based on detailed geological mapping, stratigraphic columns, carbon isotope composition, and organic carbon (Corg) content, we found lateral (>5 km) variations in stratigraphy and carbon isotope compositions in a black chert sequence above the Mesoarchean seafloor with hydrothermal activity. Two felsic tuff layers are used as stratigraphic marker beds within a black chert sequence, which was deposited on altered volcanic rocks. The black chert sequence in each tectonic block is 10-20 m thick. Thickness variations reflect topographical undulations in the paleo-ocean floor due to faulting. Early-stage normal faults indicate extensional conditions after hydrothermal activity. Black chert beds in the topographically subsided area contain higher Corg contents (about 0.4 wt%) than in areas around the depression (<0.1 wt%). Carbon isotope compositions for the black chert vary from -40 to -25 parts per thousand which are similar to values obtained for a black chert vein within the komatiiterhyolite tuff sequence (underlying the black chert sequence). Those for other rock types in the Dixon Island Formation are -33 to -15 parts per thousand. Results indicate that deformation occurred soon after the final stages of hydrothermal activity. After this early-stage deformation, organic-rich sediments were deposited over an area several kilometers across. The organic-rich sediments indicate stagnant anoxic conditions that resulted in the deposition of siliceous and organic matter from hydrothermal vein systems. When hydrothermal activity terminated, normal faulting occurred and organic matter was deposited from the sea surface and silica from the seafloor., WILEY-BLACKWELL

IODP Prel. Rept., Jul. 2009 - Abrupt changes of intermediate-water oxygen in the northwestern Pacific during the last 27 kyr
Yui Ishizaki; Ken'ichi Ohkushi; Takashi Ito; Hodaka Kawahata, An oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) currently exists at intermediate water depths on the northern Japanese margin in the northwestern Pacific. The OMZ results largely from a combination of high surface-water productivity and poor ventilation of intermediate waters. We investigated the late Quaternary history (last 27 kyr) of the intensity of this OMZ using changes in benthic foraminiferal carbon isotopes and assemblages in a sediment core taken on the continental slope off Shimokita Peninsula, northern Japan, at a water depth of 975 m. The core was located well within the region of the present-day OMZ and high surface-water productivity. The benthic foraminiferal delta C-13 values, which indicate millennial-scale fluctuations of nutrient contents at the sediment-water interface, were 0.48aEuro degrees lower during the last glacial maximum (LGM) than during the late Holocene. These results do not indicate the formation of glacial intermediate waters of subarctic Pacific origin, but rather the large contribution of high-nutrient water masses such as the Antarctic Intermediate Water, implying that the regional circulation pattern during the LGM was similar to that of modern times. Benthic foraminiferal assemblages underwent major changes in response to changes in dissolved oxygen concentrations in ocean floor sediments. The lowest oxygen and highest nutrient conditions, marked by dysoxic taxa and negative values of benthic foraminiferal delta C-13, occurred during the Bolling/Allerod (B/A) and Pre-Boreal warming events. Dysoxic conditions in this region during these intervals were possibly caused by high surface-water productivity at times of reduced intermediate-water ventilation in the northwestern Pacific. The benthic assemblages show dysoxic events on approx. 100- to 200-year cycles during the B/A, reflecting centennial-scale productivity changes related to freshwater cycles and surface-water circulation in the North Pacific., SPRINGER

茨城大学教育学部紀要(自然), Apr. 2008 - Formation of scoria cone during explosive eruption at Izu-Oshima volcano, Japan
K. Mannen; T. Ito, Scoria cones have been regarded to be formed by accumulation of ballistic bombs ejected by mild eruptions. However, more recent geological investigations show that some scoria cones could be formed during explosive eruptions. Here, we demonstrate how the scoria cone of the 1986 Izu-Oshima eruption was formed during the explosive eruption. We measured particle fractionation of the cone and propose a theoretical model to explain the observation. The model considers lateral transport of particles by turbulent eddies; particles that reached characteristic column radius, L, are laterally transported to omega L where they starts to free-fall. We obtained omega = 1.2 and 2.5 for larger and smaller particles, respectively, which is consistent to the observation. In the model, extensive fallout takes place at the base of the column where it expands rapidly. We suggest that lateral particle projection and the rapid column expansion are the key processes to form the cones., AMER GEOPHYSICAL UNION

地質学雑誌, Feb. 2006 - Middle Archean volcano-hydrothermal sequence: Bacterial microfossil-bearing 3.2 Ga Dixon Island Formation, coastal Pilbara terrane, Australia
S Kiyokawa; T Ito; M Ikehara; F Kitajima, The 3.2 Ga Dixon Island Formation in the Cleaverville Group of the coastal Pilbara terrane, Australia, is one of the most complete and best-preserved examples of middle Archean oceanic stratigraphy and contains possible microbial material. Field observations and geochemical evidence suggest that this formation contains a low-temperature hydrothermal vent system with a biogenic microbial colony from the Archean ocean. The Dixon Island Formation is similar to 350 m thick and consists of the Rhyolite Tuff, Black Chert, and Varicolored Chert Members, in ascending order. The Rhyolite Tuff Member contains many vein swarms, such as quartz and black chert veins, and highly altered rhyolite tuff layers, which are identified as an underground bypass zone for circulating hydrothermal fluid. Many black chert vein swarms in the Rhyolite Tuff Member imply intensive low-temperature hydrothermal activity during deposition of the Black Chert Member, which is 10-15 m thick. The Black Chert Member is composed of massive black chert, laminated black chert, dark-greenish siliceous shale and tuffaceous laminated chert, which are mainly composed of very fine quartz. Abundant pseudomorphs of silica after aragonite, barite, and gypsum, and a distinctly continuous, stromatolite-like biomat layer (10-20 cm thick), are preserved within the laminated black chert bed. The stromatolite-like biomat bed is formed of fine iron or iron-coated quartz pisolite within fine-grained silica. The absence of detrital sediment of continental origin and the many vein injections imply that this sedimentary facies represents a pelagic hydrothermal environment at similar to 500-2000 m paleodepth, and may have been on the slope of an immature island arc.
Microbial material has been preserved well in the lower part of Black Chert Member. The massive black chert has carbonaceous peloids (0.3-2.0 mm in diameter), which are similar to those in the black chert veins. The massive black chert contains spiral-, rod, and dendrite-shaped bacterial material. The total organic carbon (TOC) value of massive black chert in the lower part of the Black Chert Member is higher (TOC = 0.15-0.45%) than that of the overlying laminated chert section (TOC = 0.02-0.15%) and the black chert vein (TOC = 0.1-0.13%), and the carbon isotope (delta C-13) values of this lithology (-33 parts per thousand Kto similar to-27 parts per thousand) are also lighter than for the black chert veins (-29 parts per thousand to -26 parts per thousand) and the laminated black chert in the upper part of the Black Chert Member and the Varicolored Chert Member (-27 parts per thousand to -13 parts per thousand). This evidence suggests that the carbonaceous grains and bacteria-shaped material in the lower part of the Black Chert Member are of biogenic origin and were formed close to a low-temperature hydrothermal vent system. The microbial colony may have been rapidly fossilized by silicification related to hydrothermal activity. Laminated black chert in the upper part of the Black Chert and the Varicolored Chert Members may have formed by cyanobacterial sedimentation from the ocean surface., GEOLOGICAL SOC AMER, INC

地質調査研究報告, 2006, [Reviewed] - Paleoceanographic setting and preservation of buried manganese deposits in DSDP/ODP cores
Takashi Ito; Kosei Komuro, The occurrence, lithology, and stratigraphic setting of buried manganese deposits and associated host sediments in cores obtained on Legs 123-210 of the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) are examined in order to establish the formative environment and conditions of preservation. Fossil manganese nodule and crusts are found to have formed or deposited throughout the period from 100 Ma to the present, with an additional example of formation near 137 Ma, suggesting that the deep-sea environment has been oxic and suitable for the formation of manganese nodules and crusts since the Cretaceous. Many manganese nodules and crusts occur on horizons corresponding to hiatuses in sedimentation or periods of slow sedimentation, consistent with the environment in which modern nodules form (sedimentation rate less than 10 m/m.y.). Sediments overlying the fossil nodules and crusts are oozes or biogenic sediments with sedimentation rates of 1-18 m/m.y. Low total organic carbon (< 0.1 wt%) in the overlying sediments and high sulfate content (> 25 mM) in interstitial water around the manganese horizon suggest that no strong reduction occurred within the overlying sediments. Coverage by biogenic sediments containing only small amounts of organic matter is therefore considered important for the preservation of manganese nodules and crusts. Manganese carbonate occurs sporadically as nodules, concretions or thin layers in various host sediments, including clay, calcareous ooze and siliceous ooze with sedimentation rates of 6-125 m/m.y. Hiatuses are rare around the host sediments of manganese carbonate. Higher total organic carbon (0.2-1.8 wt%) in the host sediments and lower sulfate content (0-25 mM) in interstitial water around the manganese carbonate horizon suggest that reduction in association with decomposition of organic matter would have proceeded in the host sediments., SOC RESOURCE GEOLOGY

T Ito; A Usui; Y Kajiwara; T Nakano, Strontium isotopic compositions of acetic acid (HOAc) leachate fractions of eight manganese oxide deposits from the modern seafloor, and of twenty-one buried manganese nodules from Cretaceous to Recent sediments in DSDP/ODP cores were measured. Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios of HOAc leachates in all modern seafloor manganese oxides of various origins are identical with present seawater. The Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios of the HOAc leachates of buried nodules from DSDP/ODP cores are significantly lower than those of nodules from the modern seafloor and are mostly identical with coeval seawater values estimated from the age of associated sediments. It is suggested that the buried nodules in DSDP/ODP cores are not artifacts transported from the present seafloor during the drilling process, but are in situ fossil deposits from the past deep-sea floor during Cretaceous to Quaternary periods. The formation of deep-sea fossil nodules prior to the formation of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) indicates that the circulation of oxygenated deep seawaters have activately deposited manganese oxides since the Eocene Epoch, or earlier. CK NA; T NAKANO; K TAZAWA; M SAKAGAWA; T ITO, A systematic and practical method for the determination of the concentration of the isotopic composition of Sr and Nd and rare-earth elements (REE) from a single sample solution has been developed by combining and improving classical cation-exchange chromatography (CCEC) and modern high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The first step was used to separate Sr and the REE group from a dissolved rock solution by CCEC with a column of large volume and a combination of HCl-HNO3 as an eluent. The second step was used to separate individual REE components present within the REE group by HPLC, simultaneously quantify them with a post-column reaction detector, and collect Nd with a programmable fraction collector. Separated Sr and Nd fractions were then purified by another CCEC with a column of small volume and HCl as an eluent prior to the mass spectrometric analysis. The analytical results obtained for a series of standard rocks showed a good agreement with recommended values to within +/- 10% for REE quantification at the 95% confidence level and +/- 0.004% (la) for the Sr-87/Sr-86 and Nd-143/Nd-144 isotopic ratios., ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV
CHEMICAL GEOLOGY, Jun. 1995, [Reviewed] - FOSSIL MANGANESE DEPOSITS BURIED WITHIN DSDP ODP CORES, LEGS 1-126
A USUI; T ITO, Probable in-situ manganese deposits larger than 1 cm in diameter buried in ODP/DSDP cores were selected for study after examining previous descriptions of the manganese deposits in site reports and the ODP data base. Most of the selected samples from 11 cores occur at or just above sedimentary hiatuses or in slowly deposited sediments and are overlain by rapidly deposited sediments of biogenic, terrigenous or volcanogenic origin. The changes in sedimentation recorded in the lithostratigraphic sections around these deposits are closely related to changes in tectonic evolution, deep water circulation or biological productivity at the sites.
The similarity in composition and structure of the buried deposits to those of the modern manganese nodules and crusts with no evidence of post-depositional change suggest that buried manganese deposits may be used as indicators of past sedimentary conditions during which they formed. Their major components are hydrogenetic and early-diagenetic manganese minerals as well as detrital minerals. The characteristics of these manganese deposits suggests that similar processes of deposition have taken place since the Paleogene or older., ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV
