〔主要な業績〕Effect of Simultaneous Intervention in Kindergarten and Home to Improve Ball SkillsMasashi Watanabe; Naoko Aoyagi; Naomi Kaminaga, This study examines the effectiveness of a simultaneous intervention in kindergarten and home to improve ball skills in children. Two kindergartens in Ibaraki, Japan, were divided into intervention (N = 98, mean age = 5.5 [0.6] years) and control groups (N = 88, mean age = 5.6 [0.6] years). The intervention was for 4 weeks. Parents received emails with video URLs for four ball activities once a week, and they undertook the activities introduced in the video at home with their children. Before the intervention, a 60-min workshop was held for kindergarten teachers. Ball skills (distance thrown and percentage of ball catches) were assessed pre- and postintervention. Two-way repeated measures analysis of variance and multiple regression analysis were used to compare the groups and explore the factors related to the improvement of ball skills. As a result, although throwing skills did not change significantly in both groups, there was an increase in the frequency of ball activity at home and perceived change of batting skills, both of which were associated with postthrowing skills. Catching skills improved significantly only in the intervention group; however, no significant factors related to the improvement of these skills were found. Our study demonstrates that simultaneous intervention in kindergarten and home may contribute to improve catching skills over a short period of time., Human Kinetics

Participants were second- to fourth-year students (n=945) at Ibaraki University, Japan, who were randomly chosen for the survey to measure their attitudes toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals. We divided the respondents into two groups: one group who had encounters with LGBT people, and one group with no such experience. Chi-square tests were used to compare responses between the groups. More than 60% of the students considered LGBT people to be acceptable
the group with prior encounters had greater levels of acceptance compared to the group without such encounters. This is the first study to clarify the acceptability of sexual minorities among university students in Japan. Prevalence of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender among Japanese university students: A single institution surveyNasa Ikuta; Yuji Koike; Naoko Aoyagi; Akira Matsuzaka; Yasuko Fuse-Nagase; Kazuhiro Kogawa; Toshiyuki Takizawa, Objective: To elucidate the prevalence of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) among Japanese youth, we conducted a survey research that targeted university students. Materials and methods: Participants were first-year students (n=1597) at Ibaraki University, Japan (Phase 1 study) or second- to fourth-year students (n=944) at the university who were randomly preferred in the survey (Phase 2 study). Surveys measured gender identity and sexual orientation, partly using the gender identity scale (GIS). Results: The prevalence of LGBT youth among university students were 2.7%, 0.5%, 5.3%, and 0.8% (Phase 1 study) or 1.4% (Phase 2 study), respectively. The GIS scores of the transgender group were significantly lower than those of the female, male, and LGB groups (p<
0.01). Discussion: This is the first to clarify the prevalence of LGBT among youth in Japan. It has been suggested that such individuals in Japan, as in other countries, are at risk for physical and mental health concerns, thereby necessitating social and medical intervention. R.; Yamamoto; Y., Mental or cognitive brain functions, and the effect on them of abnormal psychiatric diseases, are difficult to approach through molecular biological techniques due to the lack of appropriate assay systems with objective measures. We therefore study laws of behavioral organization, specifically how resting and active periods are interwoven throughout daily life, using objective criteria, and first discover that identical laws hold both for healthy humans subject to the full complexity of daily life, and wild-type mice subject to maximum environmental constraints. We find that active period durations with physical activity counts successively above a predefined threshold, when rescaled with individual means, follow a universal stretched exponential (gamma-type) cumulative distribution, while resting period durations below the threshold obey a universal power-law cumulative distribution with identical parameter values for both of the mammalian species. Further, by analyzing the behavioral organization of mice with a circadian clock gene (Period2) eliminated, and humans suffering from major depressive disorders, we find significantly lower parameter values (power-law scaling exponents) for the resting period durations in both these cases. Such a universality and breakdown of the behavioral organization of mice and humans, revealed through objective measures, is expected to facilitate the understanding of the molecular basis of the pathophysiology of neurobehavioral diseases, including depression, and lay the foundations for formulating a range of neuropsychiatric behavioral disorder models., PUBLIC LIBRARY SCIENCE

Methods: An investigation of the fractal scaling properties of heart rate variability was carried out by using detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA). Eleven healthy subjects were examined for two consecutive days, which included usual daily activity, strenuous prolonged experimental exercise, and sleep. We also considered two patient groups with autonomic dysfunction characterized by selective sympathetic and parasympathetic dominance.
Results: Robust long-range dependence in heart rate is observed only in the state of usual daily activity, characterized by normal heart rate typical of balanced autonomic sympathetic and parasympathetic regulation. This confirms the previously postulated behavioral independence of heart rate regulation, but reveals that the occurrence of 1/f, long-range dependence is restricted to only the state of autonomic balance. Both the sympathetic dominant high heart rate state, realized during strenuous experimental exercise, and the parasympathetic dominant low heart rate state, prevalent in (deep) sleep, are characterized by uncorrelated, near white-noise-like scaling, lacking long-range dependence.
Conclusion: Remarkably, the breakdown of the long-range correlations observed in healthy heart rate in the states of sympathetic and parasympathetic dominance is in stark contrast to the increased correlations which have previously been observed in neurogenic parasympathetic and sympathetic dominance in patients suffering from primary autonomic failure and congestive heart failure, respectively. Multiscale probability density function analysis: Non-Gaussian and scale-invariant fluctuations of healthy human heart rateK Kiyono; ZR Struzik; N Aoyagi; Y Yamamoto, For a detailed characterization of intermittency and non-Gaussianity of human heart rate, we introduce an analysis method to investigate the deformation process of the probability density function (PDF) of detrended increments when going from fine to coarse scales. To characterize the scale dependence of the multiscale PDF, we use two methods: 1) calculation of Kullback-Leibler relative entropy; 2) parameter estimation based on Castaing's equation (B. Castaing et al., 1990). We compare scale-dependence of the increment PDFs between actual heart rate fluctuations and artificially generated Gaussian and non-Gaussian noise, including a widely used autoregressive model and a recently proposed multifractal model based on a random cascade process. Our analysis highlights an essential difference between heart rate fluctuations and those generated by other models. The outstanding feature of human heart rate is the robust scale-invariance of the non-Gaussian PDF, which is preserved not only in a quiescent condition, but also in a dynamic state during waking hours, in which the mean level of heart rate is dramatically changing. We demonstrate that the human heart rate in healthy individuals undergoes a dramatic breakdown of criticality characteristics, reminiscent of continuous second order phase transitions. By studying the germane determinants, we show that the hallmark of criticality-highly correlated fluctuations-is observed only during usual daily activity, and a breakdown of these characteristics occurs in prolonged, strenuous exercise and sleep. We analyze 11 records of healthy subjects, which include both usual daily activity and experimental exercise. The subjects were asked to tide on a bicycle ergometer for 2.5 hours, and maintained a heartbeat interval of 500-600 ms. In order to estimate the long-range correlation in the series of heartbeat intervals during controlled physical activity, we apply DFA to the data set with the third-order polynomial trend removed. For all records during exercise, we observe a characteristic crossover phenomenon at approximate to 300 beats. The scaling exponent in the range > 300 beats (> 3 minutes) during exercise decreases and tends to be closer to white noise (approximate to 0.5), which corresponds to uncorrelated behavior. The long-range scaling exponent during exercise is significantly lower than that during daily activity in this range. Contrary to the currently held view, our results indicate a breakdown in long-range correlations and 1/f-like scaling, rather than the increase in the Hurst exponent characteristic of a (congestive) increase in afterload and observed, e.g., in congestive heart failure (CHF) patients. Further, our results suggest an increased load imbalance induced departure from critical-like behavior, which has recently been reported in healthy human heart rate during daily activity [1]., AMER INST PHYSICS

Moreover, we find that under regular daily routine, time correlations of physical activity are significantly different during diurnal and nocturnal periods but that no difference exists under constant routine conditions. Y., 筆頭著者, A newly developed, very long-term(similar to 7 days) ambulatory monitoring system for assessing beat-to-beat heart rate variability (HRV) and body movements (BM) was used to study the mechanism(s) responsible for the long-period oscillation in human HRV. Data continuously collected from five healthy subjects were analyzed by 1) standard auto- and cross-spectral techniques, 2) a cross-Wigner distribution (WD; a time-frequency analysis) between BM and HRV for 10-s averaged data, and 3) coarse-graining spectral analysis for 600 successive cardiac cycles. The results showed 1) a clear circadian rhythm in HRV and BM, 2) a 1/f(beta)-type spectrum in HRV and BM at ultradian frequencies, and 3) coherent relationships between BM and HRV only at specific ultradian as well as circadian frequencies, indicated by significant (P < 0.05) levels of the squared coherence and temporal localizations of the covariance between BM and HRV in the cross-WD. In a single subject, an instance in which the behavioral (mean EM) and autonomic [HRV power >0.15 Hz and mean heart rate (HR)] rhythmicities were dissociated occurred when the individual had an irregular daily life. It was concluded that the long-term HRV in normal humans contained persistent oscillations synchronized with those of BM at ultradian frequencies but could not be explained exclusively by activity levels of the subjects., AMER PHYSIOLOGICAL SOC
