A cross-sectional nationwide survey involving a self-administered questionnaire was conducted. Response rates of the target schools were 46.4 % (n = 103) for junior high schools and 55.8 % (n = 116) for high schools. From these, we analyzed the data of 2960 junior high school students (1520 males, 1440 females) and 3703 high school students (1546 males, 2157 females) to examine the association between cancer-screening intention and sources of cancer-related information and understanding. A significant association between cancer-screening intention and sources of cancer information and cancer understanding was observed. The screening intention group identified more sources of cancer information than the no-screening intention group did. Understanding about cancer was reported by a higher proportion of students in the screening intention group compared with the no-screening intention group. Recognition that healthy people must take part in cancer screening was significantly associated with screening intention in both junior high (odds ratio (OR), 1.859

荒井信成,森 信二,添田孝幸,上地 勝,田神一美, The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between lifestyle, usage of mobile-phone and social support among Japanese students of college of technology. A self-reported anonymous questionnaire was administered to 208 freshmen, and explored their lifestyle, possession and use of mobile-phone, and their social support. Students who have breakfast every morning are 93.3% of the total. And there were almost no one who had the experience of visiting internet dating or posting slandering messages on internet. Findings indicate this sample have relatively healthy lifestyle. However a total of 78.9% of students used mobile-phone while walking, and 39.7% did so riding a bicycle. Because they have a high risk of traffic accident, it is necessary for them to stop using mobile-phone while walking or riding a bicycle. There are not significant differences in social support by their lifestyle, usage of mobile-phone., 茨城工業高等専門学校

Kobayashi M; Tsujimoto S; Ueji M; Takakura M, The purpose of this study was to investigate regional differences in seasonal changes in physical activity levels among female university students in Japan's Okinawa and Ibaraki Prefectures. Participants were 58 female university students in Okinawa and Ibaraki Prefectures. The physical activity levels (total energy expenditure and durations of activities at different intensity levels) were measured using a uniaxial accelerometer on seven consecutive days including a weekend in both summer and winter seasons. Climatic conditions during the survey periods were also recorded. To evaluate seasonal changes in the physical activity levels, repeated measures ANOVA were performed using season (summer or winter) and region (Okinawa or Ibaragi) as independent variables and the physical activity levels as dependent variables. Repeated measures ANOVA indicated the main of season and region and interaction between them on the total energy expenditure. The total energy expenditure decreased from summer to winter in Okinawa but increased over the same period in Ibaragi. The total energy expenditure in winter was significantly lower in Okinawa than in Ibaragi. As for the duration of light activities, season showed a main effect, and interaction between region and season was observed. The duration of light activities was shorter in winter than in summer in Okinawa. Regarding vigorous activities, a main effect was noted in region, and the duration of vigorous activities was shorter in Okinawa than in Ibaragi. In conclusion, seasonal changes in the physical activity levels differed between female university students in Okinawa and Ibaragi, and the weather, i.e., rain, is considered to have affected the physical activity levels.本研究の目的は、沖縄県と茨城県の女子大学生における身体活動量の季節変動の地域差について検討することであった。研究参加者は沖縄県と茨城県の女子大学生58名であった。夏季と冬季の2回、一軸加速度計を用いて1週間（週末を含む）の身体活動量（総エネルギー消費量および運動強度別活動時間）の測定を実施した。各季節、各地域における気候条件を記録した。分析は、地域（沖縄・茨城）と季節（夏・冬）を独立変数、身体活動量を従属変数とした繰り返しのある分散分析を行った。繰り返しのある分散分析の結果、総エネルギー消費量については、季節と地域の主効果および季節と地域の交互作用が認められた。沖縄は冬に総エネルギー消費量が減少していたのに対し、茨城は冬に増加していた。また、沖縄の冬の総エネルギー消費量は茨城に比べ低い値を示した。活動時間に関しては、低強度の活動時間に季節の主効果および地域と季節の交互作用が認められた。沖縄では、低強度の活動時間が夏よりも冬に少ないことが示された。さらに、高強度の活動時間については、地域の主効果が認められ、沖縄は茨城に比べて高強度の活動時間が少ないことが示された。結論として、沖縄県と茨城県の女子大学生における身体活動量の季節変動に地域差がみられた。身体活動量の変動には、測定期間の気候条件、すなわち雨が影響していることが考えられた。, 琉球大学教育学部
琉球大学教育学部紀要, 2010年02月 - The relationship between psychosocial factors and cell phone-use related risk behavior in junior high school students
Arai N; Ueji M; Ichimura K; Watanabe M, The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between manners, norm-consciousness, sensation-seeking, and risk behaviors associated with cell phone use by junior high school students. An anonymous questionnaire was administered to junior high school students (269 male and 256 female) at 2 junior high schools. The questionnaire measured possession and use of cell phones, collisions, manners, norm-consciousness, sensation-seeking, and tolerance of risk behavior. The rate of cell phone use was 60.1%. A total of 65.1% of students used cell phones while walking, and 45.1% did so while riding a bicycle. The manner and norm-consciousness scores of students using cell phones while walking or riding a bicycle were lower than those who did not use cell phones. Moreover, sensation-seeking scale and acceptance of risk behavior of students used cell phones were higher than who did not use cell phones. Acceptance of risk behavior and sensation-seeking of students that had the experience of visiting Internet dating or adults-content sites on cell phones were higher than those who had no experience with such sites. Findings indicated that risk behavior associated with cell phone use was negatively related to manners and norm-consciousness, and positively related to sensation-seeking and acceptance of risk behavior., The Japanese Association of School Health

櫻井健太、太田茂秋、富樫泰一、上地 勝, The purpose of this research is to illuminate the characteristics of the information that map reading beginner get by map reading, and to research the relationship between that information and getting lost.We asked 25 university students to participate. We gave a map, a compass, and a video camera to each of the students, and asked them to walk a specified route. We had them video what they saw as they walked.The information that they recorded with their video cameras was defined as"on-site information." Before their walks, we asked the students to write down all the information that they received from their maps. This information was defined as "pre-walk information. "By watching the students'videos, we investigated whether the students did or did not get lost.From the data we received, we classified our information into six types.As our statistical method, we used a cross table and logistic regression analysis to clarify the relation between the information and getting lost. Our research shows that the quantity of pre-walk information acquired is less important than acquiring pre-walk information about the characteristics of the course.Moreover, we have shown that in order to avoid getting lost, it is important to acquire on-site directional information and a great deal of other information as well., JAPAN OUTDOOR EDUCATION SOCIETY

Kunio Ichimura; Hideto Takahashi; Masaru Ueji; Masafumi Okada; Takahiko Nishijima; Katsumi Kano, Disease risk among elderly smokers is considered to be doubled due to their smoking habits and age as compared with elderly non-smokers. The investigators conducted risk assessments of smoking for respiratory symptoms among elderly people. A questionnaire survey on smoking habits and respiratory symptoms was conducted among 3,000 persons of 56 years of age and over who were randomly selected from suburban residents in a prefecture in Japan in October, 1997. A total 1,954 or 65.1% of individuals responded, consisting of 42.8% for men and 57.2% for women, with an average age of 73.6 years. In addition to descriptive analysis, multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted. The results are summarized as follows: Smokers accounted for 28.1% of men and 3.6% of women. Among all age-groups, the highest rate of smokers was observed in men of 56-69 years old (34.7%) which was lower than the national average rate for the 60-69 year-old group (56.1% of men and 14.5% of women in '97). The odds ratios and 95 percent confidence interval (95%CI) for "having phlegm every day" and "having phlegm for more than 4 days a week" among smokers were 2.06 (95%CI=1.41-3.01) and 2.77(95%CI= 1.80-4.27). Significantly higher odds ratios among smokers were also observed for "wheezing" and "shortness of breath when hurrying". Odds ratios for some respiratory symptoms including "having phlegm for more than 4 days per week" among inhalers were significantly high compared with non-smokers, whereas those among non-inhalers were not significantly different from 1.0. Odds ratios for symptoms of phlegm and wheezing were significantly higher (Odds ratio ≥2.0) among heavy smokers (Brinkman Index [B. I.] >
900) compared to non-smokers, while odds ratios of the same symptoms were not different from 1.0 among light smokers (B. I. ≤500).
Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine, 2001年, ［査読有り］ - Structural equation modeling of the relationship of bone mineral density and its risk factors in Japanese women

In this study, we aimed to examine the relationship among lifestyle factors, biologic factors, and bone mineral density (BMD) using structural equation modeling (SEM). The subjects in the present study consisted of 866 postmenopausal Japanese women aged between 40 and 80 years old. In the analysis by the SEM, we employed a multiple basic model. As the structural variables, lifestyle factors and biologic factors were selected. The goodness of fit index (GFI) of the final model was 0.991 and the Akaike's information criteria (AIC) showed the lowest value in the peripheral models. The degree of association between biologic factors and BMD was -0.576 (direct association), 0.012 (indirect association), and -0.564 (total association). With regard to the correlation between lifestyle factors and BMD, the degrees of association were 0.085, -0.084, and 0.001, respectively. This study defined a pilot model for factors influencing BMD. Although is remains necessary to conduct further analyses with more valid measurements and constructs, this model indicated that the correlation between BMD and lifestyle factors was lower than that between BMD and biologic factors.
Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine, 2001年, ［査読有り］ - 在宅高齢者におけるコンパニオンアニマルの飼育と手段的日常生活動作能力（Instrumental Activities of Daily Living; IADL）との関連－茨城県里美村における調査研究－
齊藤具子,岡田昌史,上地 勝,菊池和子,加納克己, 65歳以上の標記村住民を対象に質問紙調査を行い,IADL7項目全て「できる」と答えた者を「障害なし」,1項目以上「できない」と答えた者を「障害あり」として,コンパニオンアニマル飼育との関連を検討した.有効回答者339名のうち,飼育経験のない者は115名,現在飼育しているのは118名であった.飼育状況のうち,「犬を飼育している者」で障害ありは21名,なしは53名で,障害の有無を従属変数とした回帰分析でのオッズ比は,「飼育経験のない者」に比べ0.53であり,有意に関連していた.また「私にとってペットは親友だ」と答えた者は0.48で,飼育年数が長いほどオッズ比は低い傾向であった.コンパニオンアニマルの飼育は,高齢者のIADLと関連しており,健康の維持につながる可能性が示唆された, 日本公衆衛生学会

Osei-Hyiaman D; Ueji M; Toyokawa S; Takahashi H; Kano K, Most published studies on the role of muscle strength in the maintenance of bone mineral density (BMD) focused on the relationship between specific muscle groups and adjacent bones, mostly in young and premenopausal women. This study examined the influence of grip strength on BMD of the metacarpal index in postmenopausal Japanese women. Subjects included 1168 postmenopausal women aged 40-70 years. BMD measurement was done with computed X-ray densitometry (CXD) by analyzing Xray films of the right second metacarpal index. Grip strength was measured in both the dominant and nondominant hands using a squeeze dynamometer. Grip strength (r = 0.2474; P = 0.0001) and age (r = -0.5443; P = 0.0001) significantly correlated positively and negatively, respectively, with BMD. Physical activity (r = 0.1318; P = 0.0001) also correlated positively with BMD. Breastfeeding (r = -0.1658; P = 0.0001), however, correlated negatively with BMD. Subjects with a history of regular physical activity had higher grip strengths and BMD, than those with no physical activity. Adjustment for age, physical activity, calcium intake, BMI, breastfeeding, testing site, and menopausal type indicated a significant (P for trend = 0.0013) positive association of grip strength with BMD. Our objective was to clarify the relationship between lifestyle, body size and breast cancer risk. Methods: A matched case-control study was conducted in Ibaraki, Japan. The participants were 148 women aged 26-69 diagnosed with breast cancer at Tsukuba University Hospital or Tsukuba Medical Center Hospital between January, 1990 and March, 1997. Two controls were individually matched to the cases by age and residence. A self-administered questionnaire was used to obtain information on the family history of breast cancer, reproductive history, education, body size and lifestyle factors. Conditional logistic regression analysis was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Results: After adjustment for potential confounders, heavy weight and higher body mass index were associated with an increased risk of breast cancer among postmenopausal women (OR = 1.76, 95% 0 = 0.69, 4.48
OR = 1.57, 95% Cl = 0.61, 3.99, respectively). Current or ex-smokers were found to be at an increased risk for breast cancer (OR = 3.33
95% Cl = l.63, 6.80). Women who take hot baths had a decreased risk for breast cancer (OR = 0.67
95% Cl = 0.43, 1.06). Recreational physical activity was associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer (P Trend = 0.005). OR for breast cancer among physically active women was 0.36 (95% Cl = 0.19, 0.70), as compared with inactive women. Taller women had an increased risk of breast cancer relative to shorter women (OR = 1.49
95% Cl = 0.83, 2.70). No significant association between alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk was detected. Conclusions: Our results suggest that several potentially modifiable lifestyle factors may be useful for the prevention of breast cancer.

A self-administered questionnaire was used to obtain information on physical activity and the effects of potential confounding factors. Conditional logistic regression analysis was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95 percent confidence intervals (95% CIs). After adjustment for potential confounding factors (height, body mass index (BMI), family history of breast cancer, education, age at menarche, age at first birth, parity, menopausal status), recreational physical activity was associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer (p for trend = 0.005). OR for breast cancer among women who played regular sport or exercise more than 15.3 METs per week was 0.35 (95% CI = 0.17, 0.73), as compared to women with no sport or exercise. The risk of breast cancer was also reduced in women with higher occupational physical activity levels, but it was not significant (p for trend = 0.223). The adjusted OR among the highest quartile level was 0.55 (95% CI = 0.27, 1.12) with the lowest quartile level as reference. Osei-Hyiaman D; Toyokawa S; Ueji M; Takahashi H; Kano K, Age at menopause has been found to be associated positively with bone mineral density, and age at menarche has been found to be associated negatively with bone mineral density. However, there have been few studies on the relations of timing of menopause and length of the reproductive period with bone mineral density. The purpose of this study was to examine the relations of timing of menopause and reproductive years (calculated as age at menopause minus age at menarche) with mineral density of the second metacarpal bone in postmenopausal Japanese women. The study population consisted of 1,035 naturally menopausal women aged 40-70 years who were screened in 1996-1997. Using computed x-ray densitometry, the authors measured bone mineral density by analyzing radiographic films of the right second metacarpal bone. Using the women with early menopause (age <49 years) as the reference group and adjusting for age, subjects with late menopause were at decreased risk for low bone mineral density (odds ratio (OR) = 0.69, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.49-0.97). After adjustment for additional covariates (grip strength, physical activity, body mass index, smoking, and calcium intake), the association was unchanged (OR = 0.70, 95% CI 0.50-0.99). Postmenopausal women with more reproductive years (greater than or equal to 40 years) were at decreased risk for low bone mineral density compared with those with fewer reproductive years, after adjustment for age (OR = 0.73, 95% CI 0.40-1.30) and potentially confounding factors (OR = 0.76, 95% CI 0.41-1.37); the p-value for trend was not statistically significant. In multiple linear regression analysis, early menopause and fewer reproductive years were independent predictors of low bone mineral density. Kamihama T; Kimura T; Hosokawa J-I; Ueji M; Takase T; Tagami K, This study was conducted to show a higher prevalence of interdigital tinea pedis in athletes by comparing athletes and non-athletes, and to examine swimming pools as a route of infection. The subjects were 282 athletes, 137 non-athletes, and 140 students enrolled in a swimming class at the University of Tsukuba. This study included the taking of cotton-swab samples from the interdigital skin surfaces of both feet and cultures, microscopical examinations of scales collected from subjects with lesions, and questionnaires. There was a significant difference between athletes and non-athletes in the prevalence of the relevant pathogens, and a higher risk of infection was shown in athletes. The study also found that 63.6% of the swimming class students were carriers, and that 85.0% of their dermatophytes were Trichophyton mentagrophytes. In addition, dermatophytes were also isolated from the floors of the swimming pool and the public baths. The results of these controlled studies suggested that there was a significant risk of dermatophytosis in both athletes and non-athletes using the swimming pool., STOCKTON PRESS

加納克己,羽賀正之,細田孝子,鈴木みずえ,上地 勝,高橋秀人,茂手木甲壽夫, In order to identify factors that may contribute to osteoporosis, a cross sectional study of Japanese females over the age of 50 was conducted at 13 health centers in Ibaraki Prefecture in the period from December 1992 through March 1993 . Based on the criteria employed by the Orimo Research Group at the Ministy of Public Health and Welfare, 136 subjects were classified as having osteoporosis. Analysis of these data revealed several statistically significant differences between subjects with osteoporosis and the control group (n=680) . Some factors potentially thought to be associated with osteoporosis were not found to be statistically significant. Exercise was less frequent among those with osteoporosis in the group of subjects aged 60-69. The calcium intake of those subjects 70 and above was also significantly less for those with osteoporosis. Additionally, menopause occurred earlier among those with osteoporosis for subjects aged 50-69 . However, there was no significant difference between the control group and the group with osteoporosis in the age of menarche, nor in the rate of childbirth . Nor were statistically significant differences found between the groups in alcohol drinking, smoking or sun bathing. With the exception of serum P for those aged 50-59, there were also no significant differences between the groups in serum Ca, ALP or albumin. Regarding health status, the health of subjects aged from 50-59 with osteoporosis was significantly worse. For subjects aged 60-69, the rate of bone fractures was higher for subjects with osteoporosis, though there were no significant differences between the two groups in fall related injuries occurring in the previous year., The Japanese Society of Health and Human Ecology
