  • Locally Supported Bivariate Splines in Piecewise Constant Tension
Masaru Kamada and Kunimitsu Takahashi, 筆頭著者, We derive a means to construct a locally supported basis for the truly bivariate cardinal spline functions under the influence of parameter called tension being a different constant in each grid cell. First, the functions are formulated as a solution for a functional minimization problem. Then the associated differential equation is analyzed in the state-space representation to derive formulae for transitions of the state vectors. Finally, the locally supported basis, which is indispensable for practical applications, are constructed by the technique of dead-beat control of the state vectors. Adaptively varying the tension in each grid cell, we can reduce the ringing artifacts when applied to interpolation of image signals., IEEE

  • Islay– An Educational Programming Tool Based on State Diagrams
Masaru Kamada, 筆頭著者, This tool allows children to describe how autonomous characters in their video games should behave at the minimal cost of understanding ovals (states) and arrows (transitions). Its use in educational practices for a decade has confirmed that the tool helps children find their own talent and understand the fundamental concepts of computers such as finite state machines, concurrent processing, object classes and instances. Enthusiastic users run into the combinatorial explosion of states. Then it is the time for them to move on to the structured programming languages where they can use variables to represent states., IEEE

  • IslayTouch: an educational visual programming environment for tablet devices
Erjing Zhou; Michitoshi Niibori; Shusuke Okamoto; Masaru Kamada; Tatsuhiro Yonekura, Educational programming languages are programming languages that have been designed for users without programming experience, with the purpose of teaching them the skill of logical thinking or as an introduction to regular programming languages. Although these languages are relatively easier for beginners, difficult concepts of regular programming languages are still being introduced into some of them. As a new approach to this problem, an educational visual programming environment called Islay has been developed, in which the concept of state-transition diagram is used to compose a program. As a result, Islay becomes even easier for beginners than some other educational programming languages. In this research, a new version of Islay is developed as an Android application, with more features being added and a new user interface that is suitable for tablet devices., INDERSCIENCE ENTERPRISES LTD

  • A Preliminary Experiment of Tweet Filtering by Back Propagation
Shumpei Fujii; Michitoshi Niibori and Masaru Kamada, 責任著者, It happens that one you are following in Twitter has several aspects in his personality. Suppose we are so attracted by his bright aspect that we are following his tweets. Then we have to endure dirty tweets from his dark side. In attempt to construct Twitter client software that filters out dirty tweets (from our point of view), we trained neural networks of different depths by the standard back propagation algorithm and tested if they can tell preferable tweets from dirty ones. The result says that the shallow network having only two hidden layers and more than 32 and 64 units per layer achieves over 96% and 97% of accuracy, respectively., IEEE

  • A Structure Editor for the English Language
Marina Nakano; Emi Masuda and Masaru Kamada, 責任著者, We present a trial implementation of a structure editor for the English language. That might be the first attempt of applying the idea of structure editors, which have been quite common for the programming languages, to a natural language. This structure editor forces the writer to construct a derivation tree manually by selecting an admissible derivation rule after another and by filling a leaf node with a word. Each word is checked with a dictionary API if a (pro) noun is properly in the single or plural form, if a verb is properly inflected accordingly, and if other components such as adjective, adverb, preposition are placed at the right leaves. Then the writer gets a grammatically correct sentence together with its derivation tree. This kind of editor may be useful in writing technical documents like operating manuals that should be prepared in different natural languages because a sentence accompanied by its derivation tree may be more easily translated into other languages than a freely written sentence with its possibly wrong parse tree. At the moment, the implemented editor covers only a limited class of simple affirmative sentences., IEEE

  • A Handy Real-Time Location System for Community Bus Service
Ryousuke Iiya; Erjing Zhou; Michitoshi Niibori; Masaru Kamada; Osamu Saitou and Susumu Shibusawa, 責任著者, We present a handy information system for community bus services. Its main feature is that we have only to go around a new route as a test drive with a terminal device in order to collect and publish its geographic data such as the positions of the stops in the Google's general transit feed specification (GTFS) format. A template time table is recorded during the test drive which can be edited to complete a time table for publication in the GTFS format. From the bus on duty, its real-time position is uploaded in the GTFS realtime format. Those data can be accessible by the passengers through Google. It has been planned and yet to be implemented that voice announcements can be recorded during the test drive with the location data so that the announcements can be played back automatically., IEEE

  • A Real-TimeWeb-Cast System for Classes in the BYOD Style
Daiki Ito; Michitoshi Niibori; Masaru Kamada, A real-time web-cast system for classes in the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) style is presented. The teacher starts up our server application software to keep capturing the screens and the voices. The student PCs will be organized in the shape of a binary tree in the following steps. Each student lets his browser connect to the teacher's PC with its FQDN or IP address. The first comer becomes the root that receives screen images and voices directly from the teacher's PC by the WebSocket protocol. Two browsers newly coming in become child nodes of the root or an existing leaf node from which they receive screens and voices by the WebRTC protocol. It is advantageous especially for the classes in the BYOD style because no students are required to install anything other than a browser into the PCs in advance. It is even possible to host students outside the classroom since the teacher's voices are delivered to their PCs., IEEE

  • Design and practice of file backup system taking advantage of remotely distributed campuses
Hiroshi Noguchi; Yasuhiro Ohtaki and Masaru Kamada, We present a file backup system designed for a university on the basis of its experiences with the 2011 east Japan earthquake. This system has two levels of security: (1) The web site for public relations and the e-mail systems for communications that will work continuously even in the case of commercial power failure. (2) The personal computer systems that will be down during power failure but will restart working without any loss of data as soon as the power supply is back. The former has been implemented by employing a private cloud computing platform and a public one in combination. To the latter, the same cloud-computing approach was not applicable because it causes latency and extra cost of communications in the normal time to keep the frequently accessed data in a cloud storage. Fortunately, this particular university has three campuses so far away that one may be destroyed by a single disaster but the other two will survive. Taking advantage of the remote campuses, we designed and implemented a file storage system that keeps the original copy on-premise in a campus and its backup copy in one of the other two campuses. Its operations have shown that the communication traffic among the campuses increased only by half in order to keep the data safe against natural disasters., IEEE

Kazuomi Suzuki; Michitoshi Niibori; Adnan Saleh Rashed; Shusuke Okamoto; Masaru Kamada, An enhanced version of IslayPub is developed in this study. IslayPub is an educational programming environment available on any browsers capable of HTML5 and JavaScript. Its unique feature is to describe the behavior of automatic characters in terms of state-transition diagram visually easy to understand even for children. The former version did not offer the functions of publishing what they created and receiving likes and comments from others. In this paper, we enhance IslayPub to include those two functions which will give more fun and motivation to the children., IEEE

  • Library navigation system with FeliCa cards as landmarks
Xiao-Lei Li; Osamu Saitou; Erjing Zhou and Masaru Kamada, A library navigation system is developed to help the user reach any book in the library. The FeliCa cards are used as landmarks to acquire the user's location instead of the GPS, which is not available indoor, or expensive indoor markers like the beacon devices. The user is supposed to have an Android device on which the developed application software runs to (1) allow the user to search for a book in the library catalogue system, (2) show the map of library indicating the location of the book, (3) get the current location of the user when the user touches a FeliCa card posted on each book shelf with the device, and (4) show the route from the current location to the book location on the map. This system navigates the user to the destination as long as he touches the FeliCa on the nearest shelf every time he is lost in the library., IEEE

  • IslayTouch: An educational visual programming environment based on state-transition diagrams that runs on Android devices
Erjing Zhou; Shusuke Okamoto; Michitoshi Niibori; Masaru Kamada and Tatsuhiro Yonekura, Educational programming languages are programming languages that have been designed for beginners, with the purpose of teaching them the skill of logical thinking or as an introduction to regular programming languages. Although these languages are relatively easier for beginners, difficult concepts of regular programming languages are still being introduced into some of them. As a new approach to this problem, an educational visual programming environment called Islay has been developed. Due to the adoption of the simple concept of state-transition diagram, Islay becomes even easier for beginners than some other educational programming languages. In this research, a new version of Islay is developed as an Android application, with more features being added and a new user interface that is suitable for tablet devices., IEEE

  • Bivariate splines in piecewise constant tension
Kunimitsu Takahashi and Masaru Kamada, 筆頭著者, We derive a means to construct a locally supported basis for the truly bivariate cardinal spline functions under the influence of parameter called tension being a different constant in each grid cell.

  • Design of lower limb chair exercise support system with depth sensor
Toshiya Watanabe; Naohiro Ohtsuka; Susumu Shibusawa; Masaru Kamada and Tatsuhiro Yonekura, Sustaining lower limb functionality is extremely important in the preventative care of the elderly. Chair exercise, in which the exerciser sits on an ordinary chair, offers a way for seniors with little physical strength to exercise without a great deal of effort. Meanwhile, Microsoft's Kinect sensor that is capable of detecting human motion without the subject having to wear any kind of a special marker are becoming widely available. Exploiting this new sensor technology, this paper describes the development and deployment of a prototype lower limb chair exercise support system that takes full advantage of the Kinect depth sensor. The system supports five different chair exercises designed to strengthen the lower limbs, recognizes and evaluates exercises based on 3D position data and joint angles for each joint obtained from the Kinect sensor. The system illustrates how to do the exercises by voice instructions and model images, and superimposes the muscles used onto an image of the exerciser in real time. The system also provides exercise assessment results and advice by voice and text. In a series of trials involving seven elderly subjects in their late 70s and early 80s, an overall average recognition rate of 89% was obtained for the five exercises., IEEE

  • Interactive animation authoring platform based on state-transition diagrams that runs on Android devices
Erjing Zhou; Michitoshi Niibori; Shusuke Okamoto; Masaru Kamada and Tatsuhiro Yonekura, An interactive animation is a presentation of moving pictures that behave dynamically according to the input from users. It can be composed of animation characters modeled as finite-state machines. Based on the fact that the behavior of a finite-state machine can be defined by a state-transition diagram, an interactive animation authoring tool called Islay has been developed. Islay allows users to create interactive animation simply by drawing state-transition diagrams on a GUI-based editor. Up to now Islay mainly runs on the PCs. But we cannot use it on the portable devices that have become popular recently. In this research, a new version of Islay that runs on Android devices is developed with its user interface adapted to the touch screen interface., IEEE

  • Real-time water level visualization with pervasive IC sensors
Osamu SAITOU; Yuji KUWAHARA; Michitoshi NIIBORI and Masaru KAMADA, The climate change has increased heavy rain falling sporadically within a small spot of towns. It rains extremely heavily for a short time to cause local flash flood that may put lives in danger. For the purpose of early warning, we have developed a web-based system for real-time water-level visualization. This system is made up of newly developed compact water-level sensors with short-range radio, an access point to collect data from the sensors, and a web site to visualize the water level in real time. The sensor measures the water level by a pressure-sensitive device and transmits the data to the access point by the IEEE 802.15.4-compliant protocol to the access point. The access point collects data wirelessly from many sensors and uploads them to the web server. The web server renders a water-level map. © 2013 IEEE., IEEE Computer Society

  • A dynamic bus guide based on real-time bus locations -A demonstration plan-
Ikuko SHIGIHARA; Akiko ARAI; Osamu SAITOU; Yuji KUWAHARA and Masaru KAMADA, Motorization liberated our life from timetables of the public transportation. As the cars became more affordable, the buses became more unpopular and less frequent. Too many cars flooding on the streets caused heavy traffic jam, which made the buses even more unpopular for their arrival got almost unpredictable. Now the bus transportation in small cities has only sparse and unreliable timetables. That forms a negative spiral for our community to keep losing efficiency in both fuel and time. Even though we cannot operate buses punctually to a fixed timetable, we can still operate them precisely relative to a dynamic timetable that is based on the location of buses actually running in real time. This dynamic timetable will be a first step toward regaining popularity for the buses and breaking the negative spiral. This paper presents our project of implementing a dynamic timetable of buses in a small city in Japan. Each bus carries an Android tablet with GPS and 3G wireless connections. The tablets transmit the bus positions to a server. The server shows the real-time bus locations on a map and also predicted future locations. Passengers can check this dynamic timetable to plan their travel., IEEE

Yuta WATANABE; Shusuke OKAMOTO; Masaki KOHANA; Tatsuhiro YONEKURA and Masaru KAMADA, Our interactive animation software is written in JavaScript, and is serial execution. However, it has a problem, which is related to drawing intervals. In case the software has to process a number of animation objects, it takes a long time. The longer drawing intervals are, the slower speed of animation playing is. So, we parallelize interactive animation software with Web Workers that is one part of HTML5. We partition drawing animation with some approaches, and parallelize their process. This time, we report the parallelization approach that takes into consideration the property of Web Workers and the interactive animation software. © 2013 IEEE., IEEE Computer Society

The main feature is that the behaviors of characters are described in terms of state transition diagrams. Each state has a picture and activities. The picture represents appearance of the character in that state. The activities can be selected out of a set of performances such as relocation of the character and generation of other characters. A transition is conditioned in terms of events such as mouse click and collision with other characters. The graphical editor of state-transition diagrams built in this tool is so easy to manipulate that even children can compose interactive Flash games. © 2012 IEEE.

  • Dynamic reallocation rules on multi-server web-based MORPG system
Masaki Kohana; Shusuke Okamoto; Masaru Kamada; Tatsuhiro Yonekura, The web-based-application user base has witnessed rapid growth. It has become necessary to develop techniques that enable systems to manage simultaneous access by a large number of users. We focus on web-based MultiPlayer Online Role-Playing Games (MORPGs), which must be able to cope with a large number of users and a high frequency of user requests. In our previous work, we introduced a system using multiple web servers and a dynamic data allocation method, which is able to manage dynamic change in user requests. Using this method, we achieved a capacity of 320 users, as opposed to the user capacity of 200 for single-server MORPG system. However, we found some cases in which our method was not effective. In this paper, we propose three rules for dynamic data allocation to address different situations. Our evaluation shows that the cache works effectively if the most avatars gather in a certain place. • State-transition diagram for visual programming tool GUEST
Yuka OBU; Kazuhiro MARUO; Tatsuhiro YONEKURA; Masaru KAMADA and Shusuke OKAMOTO, Many people have been interested in Web 2.0, which is a new concept of Web service. Web sites became sources of information and functionality that enables users to create new content of their own. For this demand, more versatile browsers that enables users to edit and display content based on their creative concepts and preferences are required. Motivated by this demand, we have developed a state-transition diagram-based Web browser programming scheme that supports participatory Web use and enables end-user to interact with Web content. We implemented a prototype of our scheme called GUEST (Graphical User interface Editor by State-transition Diagram). GUEST enables users to define behaviors of a Web browser easily. However, there are some parts of complexity of user interfaces that prevent the users' intuitive understanding in the original version of GUEST. Therefore, in this paper, we focus on user interface, and introduce a new concept of the design., SPRINGER-VERLAG BERLIN

  • Construction of orthogonal overlapping pulses for impulse radio communications
Masaru KAMADA; Semih ÖZLEM and Hiromasa HABUCHI, A procedure is developed to construct a time-limited pulse for its use in the short-range impulse radio communications. The even-numbered shifts of the pulse constitute a train of overlapping pulses. The pulses are intentionally made orthogonal to the second derivative of one another. This orthogonality makes it possible to detect the received pulses, which are assumed to be the second derivative of the transmitted pulses, by means of correlation with the original pulses. An example pulse is presented that complies with the FCC regulation for indoor ultra-wide bandwidth radio communications., IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG

  • Prototyping tool for web-based multiuser online role-playing game
Shusuke OKAMOTO; Masaru KAMADA and Tatsuhiro YONEKURA, This letter proposes a prototyping tool for Web-based Multiuser Online Role-Playing Game (MORPG). The design goal is to make this tool simple and powerful. The tool is comprised of a GUI editor, a translator and a runtime environment. The GUI editor is used to edit state-transition diagrams, each of which defines the behavior of the fictional characters. The state-transition diagrams are translated into C program codes, which plays the role of a game engine in RPG system. The runtime environment includes PHP, JavaScript with Ajax and HTML. So the prototype system can be played on the usual Web browser, such as Firefox, Safari and IE. On a click or key press by a player, the Web browser sends it to the Web server to reflect its consequence on the screens which other players are looking at. Prospected users of this tool include programming novices and schoolchildren. The knowledge or skill of any specific programming languages is not required to create state-transition diagrams. Its structure is not only suitable for the definition of a character behavior but also intuitive to help novices understand. Therefore, the users can easily create Web-based MORPG system with the tool., IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG

  • Wildelife net-gamekeepers using sensor network
Leoardo M. TREJOS; Masaru KAMADA; Tatsuhiro YONEKURA and Mamun Bin Ibre REAZ, Wildlife lies in vast and wide areas where human gamekeepers work as protectors. The task of recognizing poachers in protected areas is tedious, tiring, and requires huge manpower and computational overhead. A fully automated system cannot accurately identify every such poacher. This paper proposes a conceptual system based on sensor network, which will provide amusement for cyberspace gamekeepers while protecting the wildlife. For this, the sensory data from the park is mapped to a game-like virtual environment. Cyberspace gamekeepers will access the system and play the game. While playing, they will help to conserve the wildlife in national parks by pattern recognition of intruders in the game. The sensor network in the proposed system will use microphone, accelerometers and wireless transmission system.

  • Time-stamp service makes real-time gaming cheet-free
Shunsuke MOGAKI; Masaru KAMADA; Tatsuhiro YONEKURA; Shusuke OKAMOTO; Yasuhiro OHTAKI and Mamun Bin Ibre REAZ, Assuming time-stamp servers that we can trust exist everywhere in the Internet, we propose a cheat-proof protocol for real-time gaming that has the minimum latency. The assumptions are: 1) Time-stamp servers are available near each player that issue serially numbered time stamps. 2) There is no communication break down between the player and the nearest time-stamp server. By this protocol, each player sends its own action to the other player and also sends its hash to the nearest time-stamp server. The time-stamp server sends back to the player the signed hash with time and a serial number involved. The signature is an undeniable evidence of the action. The actions are checked if they are compatible with the hashes and the signed hashes are checked if they have the correct time and if the serial numbers are contiguous. This verification can be done as a batch after the game is finished. The latency in this protocol is only the packet traveling time from a player to another.

  • Expert system for power quality disturbance classifier
    M. B. I. REAZ; F. CHOONG; M. S. SULAIMAN; F. HOHD-YASIN and Masaru KAMADA, Identification and classification of voltage and current disturbances in power systems are important tasks in the monitoring and protection of power system. Most power quality disturbances are non-stationary and transitory and the detection and classification have proved to be very demanding. The concept of discrete wavelet transform for feature extraction of power disturbance signal combined with artificial neural network and fuzzy logic incorporated as a powerful tool for detecting and classifying power quality problems. This paper employes a different type of univariate randomly optimized neural network combined with discrete wavelet transform and fuzzy logic to have a better power quality disturbance classification accuracy. The disturbances of interest include sag, swell, transient, fluctuation, and interruption. The system is modeled using VHSIC Hardware Description Language (VHDL), a hardware description language, followed by extensive testing and simulation to verify the functionality of the system that allows efficient hardware implementation of the same. This proposed method classifies, and achieves 98.19% classification accuracy for the application of this system on software-generated signals and utility sampled disturbance events., IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC

Tomoko Yokokawa; Masaru Kamada; Yasuhiro Ohtaki and Tatsuhiro Yonekura, An experimental test has been done on the suitability of box splines for the estimation of color images from their observation through the honeycomb color filter. The estimation is made by following the framework of consistent sampling by Unser and Aldroubi. Numerical evaluation of the estimation errors has shown that the best estimation may be made by choosing the box splines which are twice locally averaged along each of the three axes consisting of the unilateral triangular mesh. A close look at estimated images has indicated that those box splines are almost free from directional jaggy noises that the traditional B-splines suffer from., IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG

Characters that play in a movie are modeled as object definitions in terms of state-transition diagrams. Each state has a picture and activities. The picture represents appearance of the character in that state. The activities can be selected out of a set of performances such as relocation of the character and generation of other characters. A transition is conditioned in terms of events such as mouse click and collision with other characters. • Design of UWB pulses in terms of B-splines
Mitsuhiro MATSUO; Masaru KAMADA and Hiromasa HABUCHI, The present paper discusses a new construction of UWB pulses within the framework of soft-spectrum adaptation., The employed basis functions are B-splines having the following properties: (i) The B-splines are time-limited piecewise polynomials. (ii) The, first-order B-splines are rectangular pulses and they converge band-limited functions at the limit that their order tends to infinity. (iii) There are an analog circuit and a fast digital filter for the generation of B-splines. Simple application of Gram-Schmidt orthonormalization process to the shifted B-splines results in a few basic pulses, which are well time-limited and have a broad band width, but do not comply with the FCC spectral mask. A constrained approximation technique is proposed for adaptively designing pulses so that they approximate target frequency characteristics. At the cost of using eleven shifted B-splines, an example set of four pulses comforting the FCC spectral mask is obtained., IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG

The toot is named Islay. The interactive animation addressed in this paper is one of computer animations whose scenario is varied according to key and mouse inputs by viewers. An animation made by the tool is constructed as a collection of characters. The behavior of a character is defined by a state-transition diagram. The GUI editor makes it possible to create a simple animation by mouse manipulation within half a minute, if the prepared pictures are used.
The animation interpreter in the tool serves multi viewers who operate each network-connected computer. The core routine of the interpreter runs on each viewer's computer in this case. The communication between the computers is implemented using our software DSM (Distributed Shared Memory) library. This paper shows the implementation details of the interpreter, as well as the brief overview of the rest of the tool., IEEE

  • A Network Game based on Fair Random Numbers
Masaru KAMADA; Kaoru KUROSAWA; Yasuhiro OHTAKI and Shusuke OKAMOTO, A compromising technique is proposed for deterring clients from cheating by robot players in skill-based real-time network games. This technique is to inject a fair random noise into the manual input for a real-time game modeled as a chaotic dynamical system. The fair random noise is determined by means of the bit commitment protocol so that neither host nor client can control the noise in their favor. A scenario possibly plotted by a robot player for its victory may be spoiled by slight noise injection because of the sensitivity of chaotic systems to the input. The noise injection brings a luck-based factor into a skill-based game. In this sense, the technique proposed in this paper is not a solution but a compromise for the inherent problem of robot players with the skill-based network games. • Digital/Analog Hybrid Implementation of Cardinal Spline Interpolation
Masaru KAMADA and Mitsuhiro MATSUO, A digital/analog hybrid system is presented which implements the cardinal polynomial spline interpolation of arbitrary degree. Based on the fact that the (m - 1)st derivative of a spline of degree m - 1 is a staircase function, this system generates a cardinal spline of degree m - 1 by m - 1 cascaded integrators with a staircase function input. A given sequence of sampled values are transformed by a digital filter into coefficients for the B-spline representation of the spline interpolating the sampled values. The values of its (m - 1)st derivative with respect to time are computed by the recurrence formula interpreting differentiation of the spline as difference of the coefficients. Then a digital-to-analog converter generates a staircase function representing the (m - 1)st derivative, which is integrated by a cascade of m - 1 analog integrators to make the expected spline. In order to cope with the offset errors involved in the integrators, a dynamical sampled-data control is attached. An analog-to-digital converter is employed to sample the output of the cascaded integrators. Target state of the cascaded integrators at each sampling instance is computed from the coefficients for the B-spline representation. The state error between the target and the estimated is compensated by feeding back a weighted sum of the state error to the staircase input., IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG

  • A time function to express hand-drawn letters
Masaru Kamada; Akira kawakami and Kaz Ishikawa, An efficient function to express curves of hand-drawn letters is derived from a simple model of hand-drawing. The pen-tip is modeled as a point mass which is moved by force as constant as possible on a plane and is navigated to go through some characteristic points to form the curve's peculiar shape. The characteristic points are assumed to be where the pen-tip has locally minimal velocity and where it touches the baseline. Among those points, a steeple like the left bottom of 'h' is prominent, which is modeled as a pausing point where the tip should pause at a moment to alter its moving direction. The derived solution is a mixture of a fifth order spline with its knots placed at the characteristic points and a fourth order spline with those at the pausing ones. This mixed function is proven by computer experiments employing real hand-drawn data to be efficient in expressing hand-drawn letters. This means that the proposed model well imitates hand-drawing., IEEE

Kazuo Toraichi and Masaru Kamada, The knot positions of a periodic quadratic spline function which furnishes the smoothest interpolation of equispaced data are clarified. It is proved that the knots are to be at the midpoints of every two adjacent data points for the smoothest interpolation. This gives a partial answer to the problem where to locate the knots to obtain the smoothest spline interpolation of even degree., ELSEVIER SCIENCE PUBL CO INC

  • A function to express hand-drawn letters
Masaru Kamada; Kazuo Toraichi; C. Y. Huang and W. E. Pan, An efficient function to express curves of hand-drawn letters is derived from a simple model of hand-drawing.

  • A general formula for the wavelets in fluency approach
Kazuo Toraichi and Masaru Kamada, Fluency approach is to deal with staircase, polygonal and band-limited signals as those in a unified series of signal spaces of which characteristics vary with the parameter of degree. Scaling functions and their duals have been obtained which fulfill a part of the requirements to constitute a multiresolutional analysis in this approach. The purpose of the present paper is to derive general formulae to express wavelets and their duals which fulfill the rest of the requirements. It is the first step to have a general expression of every possible wavelet in selecting a wavelet. The degree is limited to be arbitrary positive odd integers so far in this paper. The general formulae derived in this paper are in the form of linear combinations of the sampling functions, which are scaling functions, and their duals. These formulae can be also regarded as a reduced version of the conditions for multiresolutional analysis in terms of sampling functions and their duals. The general formulae provide a start point for selecting a wavelet which decides characteristics of a multiresolutional analysis in the fluency approach. Some criteria for the concrete selection for each purpose of multiresolutional analysis and a formula for the even-degree cases are yet to be aquired in the future., IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG

  • A method of designing windows based on spline approximation
Kazuo Toraichi; Ryuichi Kawamoto; Masaru Kamada; Mamoru Iwaki and Rokuya Ishii, A practical method of designing windows by using C-spline functions is proposed. Given sidelobe fall-off controls the frequency characteristics at higher frequencies, while desired characteristics and specified error tolerance control those at lower frequencies. The optimal dimension is determined as the minimum to satisfy the tolerance of error in approximating the desired characteristics in the logarithmic scale. The effectiveness of this method is demonstrated by several design examples superior to Kaiser-Bessel, gaussian, Hanning, Blackman, Parzen or cos(alpha) x windows. respectively., TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD

  • A quadratic spline function generator based on B-spline functions
Masaru Kamada; Hitoshi Sakai and Kazuo Toraichi, Pi. function generator is developed which purges D-A conversion of phase distortions by replacing both the hold circuit and the analog lowpass filter. This generator implements interpolation of a discrete-time signal by a quadratic spline function which is a smooth piecewise polynomial. Fidelity in the amplitude characteristic of the generator is estimated referring to the one of the ideal lowpass filter. It is also proved that the generator is of linear phase. The generator is constructed in the form of an FIR digital filter with a time-varying impulse response. Based on the linear phase characteristic, the generator is useful in D-A conversion, especially in audio signal processing applications. © 1989 IEEE

  • スプライン補間によるビデオハードコピーの画質改善
寅市和男,鎌田賢,石打智美,楊賽,森亮一, This paper aims at realizing a video hardcopy of a quality required for photographs in an album. A method is proposed for digital image interpolation by which the subjective quality of the static image is improved to the same level as that of the original dynamic image. The goal of the improvement of the subjective quality was set as 1.5 times in terms of the improvement in the resolution in vertical and horizontal directions. The method is based on the bivariate quadratic spline interpolation. By calculating the corresponding impulse response, a digital filter with a high‐speed operation was designed. By simulation and psychovisual experiment, it was verified that the goal of the improvement was achieved. Copyright © 1989 Wiley Periodicals, Inc., A Wiley Company
