Massao Okazaki, The well-formedness of half-lines of Old English alliterative verse is determined not only by the distribution of stress but also by the disposition of syllables. The relevance of the syllable disposition to determining the well-formedness of half-lines is seen in the fact that quadrisyllabic half-lines containing two unprefixed disyllabic words must not begin with a word headed by a light syllable. This fact is elegantly captured by a constraint which requires that half-lines of Old English alliterative verse contain at least three feet in Keyser and O'Neil's (1985) sense, and the introduction of the constraint into a theory of Old English poetic meter sheds new light upon some other peculiar aspects of Old English alliterative verse. © 1998, The English Linguistic Society of Japan. 岡崎正男, The distribution of sentence accents is shown to be regulated by cognitive-semantic factors. In particular, a model of sentence accent assignment for English is proposed which is comprised of two levels of derivation: one for pitch accent assignment as a semantic-phonological mapping process having access to the specific/nonspecific and action/nonaction distinctions, and the other for nucleus assignment as a genuine phonological process having access to the phonological phrase in the sense of prosodic phonology. The validity of the model is further shown by accentual facts in German, where the mapping process for pitch accent assignment in English is also operative, and in Danish, where the two semantic distinctions play slightly different roles from those which they play in English., 日本音声学会

Shinji Saito; Masao Okazaki; Masaharu Shimada, In this paper, we attempt to determine the underlying word order of Old English (OE) including the position of INFL. We will show that Early OE and Late OE are SOVI (S-VP-I) and SIOV (S-I-VP) languages, respectively, pointing out a striking difference in the distribution of stressless pronouns between them. On the basis of the underlying word order change in the history of English, we will propose a principle regulating word order change, which we call here the Principle of Parameter Percolation (PPP). © 1991, Department of Mathematics, Tokyo Institute of Technology. Lawrence; Hiroaki Horiuchi; Jun Abe; Masao Okazaki, This article attempts to establish the identity of the English category-changing affix en, which functions both as a prefix and as a suffix and to give a principled explanation for its peculiar behavior within the framework of Lexical Phonology proposed by Halle and Mohanan 1985. It is first demonstrated that en is a class I affix. It is also argued that en is basically a suffix and that the prefix en- is derived by the application of the general rule Copy-α. Finally, by adopting the copying analysis, a principled account is given for the non-assimilation of /N/ in cases like enlarge and enrich.∗. © 1989, The English Linguistic Society of Japan. Masao Okazaki, In this paper, we first point out common exceptions to previous generalizations on the phenomenon of Old English High Vowel Deletion, based mainly on the data in The Anglo-Saxon Poetic Records, An Anglo-Saxon Dictionary and A Concise Anglo-Saxon Dictionary, and then demonstrate that the exceptions exhibit a certain generality which is most properly captured by a universal principle. In order to capture this generality, we propose what may be called the Principle of Markedness for Phonological Derivation,which prohibits a derivation producing a more marked peak in a syllable than that of the immediately preceding stage. Finally, we argue that the principle also works in Mordern German and that it is highly likely to be a linguistic universal. © 1988, International Heart Journal Association. All rights reserved.
