Several studies estimated the aggregated cost but did not always consider the critical issues. Some do not address non-market values such as biodiversity and human health, and most do not address differentiating discount rates. In this study, we estimate the aggregated cost of climate change using an integrated assessment model linked with detailed-process-based climate impact models and different discount rates for market and,non-market values. The analysis reveals that a climate policy with minimal aggregated cost is sensitive to socioeconomic scenarios and the way discount rates are applied. The results elucidate that a lower discount rate to non-market value—that is, a higher estimate of future value—makes the aggregated cost of achieving the Paris Agreement economically reasonable., IOP Publishing Ltd
Environmental Research Letters, 01 Aug. 2023, [Reviewed] - 〔Major achievements〕Assessing the effectiveness of adaptation against sea level rise in Japanese coastal areas: protection or relocation?
Makoto Tamura; Kohei Imamura; Naoko Kumano; Hiromune Yokoki, Last, Sea level rise (SLR) due to climate change poses a serious threat to human populations in coastal areas. As a result, assessing the impacts of SLR and evaluating potential adaptations is essential. This study assesses the impacts of SLR and ocean tides on coastal Japanese prefectures by estimating the extent of potentially inundated areas, affected populations, and economic damages. The latest climate scenarios, tidal data, and shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs) are used to estimate the SLR and its inundation effects at a resolution of 1 km. Economic damages are estimated following the methods outlined in the “Manual for economic evaluation of flood control investment (draft).” It was found that all impacts (inundated areas, affected populations, and economic damages) under RCP2.6-SSP1 are significantly smaller than those under RCP8.5-SSP5, suggesting the importance of mitigation efforts. In addition, the study evaluates the cost and effectiveness of protection and relocation adaptations using data on the cost of constructing dikes and the cost of relocating houses and infrastructure. While relocations due to SLR have not yet been undertaken in Japan, the relocation costs could be estimated based on the conventional scheme of community relocation for natural disasters such as life-threatening floods and tsunamis caused by major earthquakes. It was found that the costs of relocation can exceed those of protection under the current framework of Japanese relocation policies., Springer

Here we analyze the first global survey on the use of SLR projections for 2050 and 2100. Two-hundred and fifty-three coastal practitioners engaged in adaptation/planning from 49 countries provided complete answers to the survey which was distributed in nine languages – Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. While recognition of the threat of SLR is almost universal, only 72% of respondents currently utilize SLR projections. Generally, developing countries have lower levels of utilization.,There is no global standard in the use of SLR projections: for locations using a,standard data structure, 53% are planning using a single projection, while the remainder are using multiple projections, with 13% considering a low-probability high-end scenario. Countries with histories of adaptation and consistent national support show greater assimilation of SLR projections into adaptation decisions. This research provides new insights about current planning practices and can inform important ongoing efforts on the application of the science that is essential to the promotion of effective adaptation., Nature Portfolio

土木学会論文集G(環境), 27 Sep. 2021, [Reviewed] - 〔Major achievements〕Estimating the cost of coastal adaptation using mangrove forests against sea level rise
Kumano; N.; M. Tamura; T. Inoue; and H. Yokoki, Last, Sea level rise due to climate change poses a serious threat to human populations in coastal areas. In planning possible countermeasures, it is important to consider the potential economic risks and the cost of any proposed adaptation. This paper examines the cost effectiveness of adaptation measures that combine mangrove afforestation (green infrastructure) and dike construction (gray infrastructure) in areas considered to be at risk of inundation. Based on data for 112 countries and regions where mangrove forests are present along the coastline, the global benefit/cost ratio for the combination of dikes and mangrove is approximately 1.5 times higher than the ratio for dike-only protection. It was found that this type of multiple protection scheme can reduce the number of dikes required and the overall cost of adaptation., Taylor and Francis

However, various issues still remain until such information can be widely utilized by national and local governments and enterprises. Here, the authors, who have long been involved in research on climate projection and impact assessment, discussed various obstacles that are currently seen and clues to the solution. As a result, the communities of climate projection, impact assessment, and users have their own premises and expectations for other communities, hence there is a gap between them. For the solution, it is important to collaborate among the communities of climate projection, impact assessment, and users. Specifically, it was shown that it is necessary to improve mutual information exchange and coordination before the information is created, and to develop the institution and facilities for realizing it.

Although the relative contributions of these factors are important for climate change related decision-making, they are poorly understood. Here, we show to what extent the projected economic impacts of climate change can be attributed to these three factors. Our modelling framework consisting of global, multisectoral impact models coupled with an integrated assessment model enables us to estimate the global total economic impacts of climate change while incorporating these uncertainty sources. Whereas the most pessimistic pathway without mitigation would result in a net economic impact equivalent to 6.6% (3.9-8.6%) of global gross domestic product at the end of this century, the pathways with stringent mitigation would limit the impact to around or less than 1%. Although the uncertainties are great, the climate change mitigation pathway is the dominant factor and socioeconomic developments can also contribute to alleviate the impacts of climate change. These results suggest that decisions on mitigation and development have a great influence in determining the economic impacts of climate change, regardless of the uncertainties in the climate response., NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP

Climatic Change, 05 Jan. 2019, [Reviewed] - Global assessment of the effectiveness of adaptation in coastal areas based on RCP/SSP scenarios
Makoto Tamura; Naoko Kumano; Mizuki Yotsukuri; Hiromune Yokoki, Last, The objective of this study is to assess the global impact of sea level rise and to evaluate the effectiveness of adaptation. Global areas of inundation due to sea level rise are identified. The affected populations and the economic damage caused by inundation due to future climate change are estimated for a number of scenarios involving Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) and Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP). The effects of adaptation in coastal areas, specifically the effects of elevating dikes, are evaluated. According to study results, dikes 1 m in height may reduce the total inundated area by approximately 40% below the no-adaptation baseline under the same RCP. The cost of adaptation was estimated using an original cost database to establish the cost of protection in future socioeconomic scenarios. It was found that the incremental adaptation cost was less than the economic damage in almost all cases of RCP/SSP, providing an incentive to take action to respond to climate change., Springer Netherlands
Climatic Change, 05 Jan. 2019, [Reviewed] - INUNDATION IMPACTS DUE TO SEA LEVEL RISE AND THE ADAPTATION ASSESSMENTS FOR COASTAL PROTECTION
TSUCHIDA Koujiro; TAMURA Makoto; KUMANO Naoko; YOKOKI Hiromune, Corresponding,Inundation impacts due to sea level rise caused by climate change were assessed globally using multiple global climate model outputs. In particular, the assessment accuracy was improved by upgrading the data for coastlines according to a method previously proposed by the authors. As a result, 750 − 820 × 103 km2 of coastal land was estimated to be inundated globally by 2100 under Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5. A new method for estimating the adaptation cost by building coastal dikes was applied, and economic damage and adaptation costs were compared under several adaptation scenarios. If all global inundation were avoided only by building coastal dikes, the adaptation cost was estimated to be six times as much as the inundation damage cost at the end of this century. This study's consideration of the adaptation options against global inundation suggested that multiple options, such as "green infrastructure" and other accommodations, should be implemented.

Journal of Japan Society of Civil Engineers, Ser. G (Environmental Research), 2019, [Reviewed] - EXAMINING IMPACT AND EFFECTIVENESS OF COASTAL ADAPTATION USING GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE AGAINST SEA LEVEL RISE
KUMANO Naoko; TAMURA Makoto; YOKOKI Hiromune, Last,Sea level rise due to climate change may threaten humans living near coastal areas. To adapt to climate change, it is important to examine the effectiveness and cost of coastal protection. Coastal areas can be protected more efficiently and economically using both green and gray infrastructure, such as mangroves and sea dikes, along the coastline. However, few studies have examined the long-term feasibility and impact of adaptation measures at a global scale. Therefore, this study carried out an impact assessment of inundation and a cost analysis of such measures, focusing on 112 countries and regions containing mangrove forests. It was found that combining mangrove forests and dikes could be potentially effective in the global aggregates. However, the national feasibility of such measures depends on the country, which requires site-specific management solutions to accommodate local conditions.

Last, Numerical simulations for implementation of efficient countermeasure against lagoonal pollution in Funafuti Atoll of Tuvalu were conducted in this study. In the simulation the spatial differences of pollutant outflow were estimated by using the houses distribution. Fongafale Island was divided into the three areas where countermeasure was implemented, and the six countermeasure scenarios were considered in total. Pollutant volume was estimated in six small regions that covered whole of Funafuti Atoll. Effective countermeasure case was different in the small regions. Thus, appropriate selection of the target region of pollution reduction enables to decreasing number of houses which implement the countermeasure. Countermeasure efficiency parameter indicated that the countermeasure in the middle of Fongafale Island where has high density of houses had high efficiency for reducing the pollution.,

This study conducted the numerical simulation of pollutant advection and dispersion in Funafuti Atoll of Tuvalu in order to identify the characteristic of lagoonal pollutant behavior. Simulated results of the monthly initialized condition of pollutant distribution indicated that the pollutant flowing out from the nearshore of Fongafale Island was transported to the west-side of the atoll. Characteristics of the transported pollutant increasing are different between north-western and south-western part of the atoll. In July and August the pollutant increased rapidly in the latter half of the month. The year-long simulation, which was conducted for considering the retention of pollutant, indicated that the retention areas were formed in the offshore of Fongafale Island. Additionally, the south-western part of the atoll was the retention area from the end of July. It was estimated that the pollutant source of retention area in the south-western part of the atoll was the another retention area which formed in the offshore of Fongafale Island.,

Numerical simulation of the lagoonal currents and virtual particles advection was conducted in order to estimate the characteristics of the water pollution in the lagoon of Funafuti Atoll, Tuvalu. Comparison of the calculated current velocity and water surface elevation and the observed data showed good agreement. The calculated lagoonal currents showed that surface currents were driven by wind. On the reef-flat, the currents were formed by combined influences with wind and tide. Numerical simulation of virtual particles advection indicated that the particles which were installed in the nearshore of Fongafare Island were transported to the west-side of the atoll through a year. In the non-trade-wind season, the high retention of installed particles was calculated in the lagoon., Japan Society of Civil Engineers
土木学会論文集B2(海岸工学), Nov. 2014, [Reviewed] - Simulations of coral gravel accumulation in the open-cut causeway in fongafale islet of Funafuti Atoll, Tuvalu
Daisaku Sato; Hiromune Yokoki, Numerical simulations of coral gravel transportation were conducted to estimate the accumulation possibility in the gap which is formed by the open-cutting of the causeway in Fongafale Islet of Funafuti Atoll. In the numerical simulation of wave field, the high wave conditions were considered in the boundary condition. Calculated morphological change in the gap showed that the extremely large accumulation of coral gravels was not estimated. However the southern edge of the gap had large accumulation locally. In the middle and northern part of the gap accumulated gravel formed thin layer. Because the calculated morphological change of lower wave condition showed large accumulation as well as the results of higher wave condition, it is estimated that the direction of incident wave is important factor of the accumulation. The simulated result indicated that the rapid blockade of the gap would not be caused by accumulation of coral gravels. However, the periodic maintenance of the gap is required for keeping the function of the gap continuously., American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
Proceedings of the Coastal Engineering Conference, 2014 - Heavy metal contamination of coastal lagoon sediments: Fongafale Islet, Funafuti Atoll, Tuvalu
Fujita; M.; Y. Ide; D. Sato; P. S. Kench; Y. Kuwahara; H. Yokoki; and H. Kayanne, To evaluate contamination of coastal sediments along Fongafale Islet, Central Pacific, a field survey was conducted in densely populated, sparsely populated, open dumping and undisturbed natural areas. Current measurements in shallow water of the lagoon indicated that contaminants from the densely populated area would only be transported for a small proportion of a tidal cycle. Acid-volatile sulfides were detected in both the intertidal beach and nearshore zones of the densely populated area, whereas these were no detection in the other areas. This observation lends support to argument that the coastal pollution mechanism that during ebb tide, domestic wastewater leaking from poorly constructed sanitary facilities seeps into the coast. The total concentrations of Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb were relatively high in all of the areas except the undisturbed natural area. The indices of contamination factor, pollution load index and geoaccumulation index were indicative of heavy metal pollution in the three areas. The densely populated area has the most significant contamination; domestic wastewater led to significant contamination of coastal sediments with Cr, Zn, Cu, Pb and Cd. The open dumping area is noteworthy with respect to Mn and Ni, which can be derived from disposed batteries. Crown Copyright (C) 2013 Published by Elsevier Ltd. 土木学会論文集B2(海岸工学), Nov. 2013, [Reviewed] - Anthropogenic impacts on water quality of the lagoonal coast of Fongafale Islet, Funafuti Atoll, Tuvalu
Masafumi Fujita; Jumpei Suzuki; Daisaku Sato; Yuji Kuwahara; Hiromune Yokoki; Hajime Kayanne, Water pollution, evident by negative values of redox potential in waters, occurs at the lagoonal coast located near the densely populated area of Fongafale Islet on Funafuti Atoll, Tuvalu, Central Pacific. Sediment microbial quinone analysis revealed that these coastal sediments exhibit 2.7-10.4 times more microbial biomass, significantly different microbial community structure and low microbial diversity, when compared to an undisturbed natural coastal sediment. Thus, the pollution is chronic. By considering the total land use/coverage on the islet, the situation of septic tank installations, temporal changes in water redox potential and Escherichia coli numbers in the coastal waters and the spatial distribution of acid volatile sulfide in the sediments, we conclude that domestic wastewater is the primary source of pollution. This pollution is proposed to occur via the following mechanism: during ebb tides, domestic wastewater leaking from bottomless septic tanks and pit toilets run off into the lagoonal coast. Tide changes control the pollution load of domestic wastewater., SPRINGER JAPAN KK

MITIGATION AND ADAPTATION STRATEGIES FOR GLOBAL CHANGE, Dec. 2011 - Damage from the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami - A quick report
Nobuo Mimura; Kazuya Yasuhara; Seiki Kawagoe; Hiromune Yokoki; So Kazama, The Tohoku region, Northeast Japan, was hit by a gigantic earthquake which occurred in the Pacific close to Tohoku, and subsequently by a giant tsunami. These hazards have caused huge damage on the eastern coast Japan. The earthquake's magnitude was 9.0, the strongest ever recorded in Japan. The tsunami was also historical as its run-up height reached over 39 m. As of early May, 2011, over 24 thousand people were reported as dead or missing. Moreover, serious accidents at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plants No. 1 were caused by the effects of the tsunami. Therefore, the damage faced by Japanese people can be seen as a giant composite disaster. Although Japan, and the northeast of Japan in particular, has over a long time period increased its preparedness against earthquakes and tsunamis, huge damage still occurred. This paper considers why this tragedy occurred, and what unrecognized factors contributed to the high vulnerability of the area. To assist in answering such questions, this paper presents a timely report of the features of the earthquake and tsunami, the damage they caused, and the early efforts for recovery and reconstruction., SPRINGER
Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies for Global Change, 2011 - Effects of climate change on coastal disasters: new methodologies and recent results
Kazuya Yasuhara; Hideo Komine; Hiromune Yokoki; Takeshi Suzuki; Nobuo Mimura; Makoto Tamura; Guangqi Chen, Humanity faces an increasing possibility that unusual and extreme natural disasters will increase, compounded with climate change, including global warming. These compound events are designated as compounded natural hazards in this study. A methodology must be developed for predicting what events and risks will confront future societies, to propose countermeasures and adaptation strategies against these events, and to evaluate the influences of compound disasters on infrastructure which is particularly situated near coasts and rivers. Based on the above-stated background and demands, this study was undertaken with the intention of upgrading the methodology for estimating effects on infrastructure of compound events such as increased typhoon and rainfall severity caused by global warming occurring concurrently with a great earthquake in Japan. Such a methodology is expected to contribute to progress in the fields of natural disaster mitigation and land preservation, particularly benefiting coastal and river areas in Japan. Additionally in this study, risk and economic loss analyses for the possible occurrence of compound disasters for coastal infrastructure and foundations are produced for establishing environmental strategies at the governmental level. The authors further propose adaptation strategies and techniques as countermeasures against these events., SPRINGER TOKYO

Daisaku Sato; Hiromune Yokoki, Development of a numerical model for future estimation of morphological changes in Majuro atoll were carried out, and, at the same time, examination of beach nourishment for sustainable island conservation plan was examined by the developed model. Identified erosion and accretion area from calculated shoreline indicated that the northern tip of Laura and some areas in LongIsland had severe erosion until 100 years later as well as large accretion in northern part of the atoll. Three beach nourishment scenarios using eroded sediments, which were accreted in deep lagoon in northern part of atoll, were examined and they decreased 30% of accumulative erosion volume compared with the non-conservation result. This result shows that the beach nourishment is an effective option to sustainable island conservation plan in Majuro atoll.

Although the extremely high waves due to tropical cyclones caused large morphological changes on atoll islands, the detail of the waves under tropical cyclones are not fully understood, because such strong tropical cyclones attack atoll islands once in a few decades. In this study, the numerical simulation of winds and waves under the tropical cyclone "Gavin" were carried out. The simulated results showed that the lagoonal significant wave height increased twice as high as the mean wave height in March. In the tropical cyclone situation, the place of passage and effective fetch are important for the lagoonal wave condition., Japan Society of Civil Engineers

Changes In The Human-monsoon System Of East Asia In The Context Of Global Change, 01 Jan. 2008 - Statistical analysis of coastal morphological data sets over seasonal to decadal time scales
Kroon; A.; M. Larson; I. Möller; H. Yokoki; G. Rozynski; J. Cox; P. Larroude, Statistical analysis of long-term morphological data on coastal sedimentary features provides important information on the processes governing these features and their evolution in space and time. In this paper, seasonal, yearly and decadal (i.e. long-term) behavior of coastal morphological features is derived from field data by using both simple and advanced statistical techniques. The sedimentary features which we are especially focusing on are a) nearshore bars, and b) large-scale shoreline undulations, for example, longshore sand waves and nesses. High-quality bathymetric field data of regularly sampled cross-shore profiles and shorelines were the basis of the available data sets at Noordwijk beach (The Netherlands), Duck, North Carolina (USA), Sylt (Germany), Lubiatowo (Poland) and Winterton (UK). Additional data sets from Argus video-images (see [Holman, R.A., Stanley, J., 2007. The history, capabilities and future of Argus. Coastal Engineering Special Issue of the CoastView project. doi: 10.1016/j.coastaleng.2007.01.003]) and aerial photographs were used to increase the temporal and spatial resolution of the data sets where possible. The statistical methods applied include some linear and non-linear techniques described by Larson et al. [Larson, M., Capobianco, M., Jansen, H., Rozyfiski, G., Southgate, H.N., Stive, M., Wijnberg, K.M., Hulscher, S., 2003. Analysis and modeling of field data on coastal morphological evolution over yearly and decadal time scales. Part 1: background and linear techniques. Journal of Coastal Research, 19-4, 760-775] and Southgate et al. [Southgate, H.N., Wijnberg, K.M., Larson, M., Capobianco, M., Jansen, H., 2003. Analysis of field data of coastal morphological evolution over yearly to decadal timescales. Part 2: non-linear techniques. Journal of Coastal Research, 19-4, 776-789]. The methods proved to be useful for extracting characteristics of the coastal sedimentary features concerning length scales (e.g., spacing and rhythmicity) and temporal scales (e.g., migration rates and evolutionary patterns). However, the success of the statistical analysis strongly depends on the total size of the data set characterized by the specific spatial coverage, spatial resolution, temporal resolution, and overall length in time. Recent data sets from remote sensing video systems like Argus often meet these requirements and are of major importance for the formulation of conceptual behavior models. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Atoll islands with low-lying and little resource have high vulnerability against the sea-level rise due to the global warming. The countermeasures concerning the future land maintenance against the sea-level rise should be considered immediately. However, the studies on the quantitative information or numerical models of atoll island changes are quite few. Thus, in this study, measurement of beach profiles in Laura islet located in the western part of Majuro Atoll, Marshall Islands were carried out on the same profiles which were measured in 1997 and 1998 by SOPAC. Comparing our measurement results with the previous SOPAC's profiles revealed the quantitative profile changes during the last decade: from 1997 to 2007. It also revealed that the lagoonal coastline in Laura islet were stable in the last decade except some coast lines. We also reproduced these profile changes by the numerical model which was developed in this study based on longshore sediment transport system. The results of numerical calculation and the measured geographical changes showed a good agreement., Japan Society of Civil Engineers

The risks of river floods and inundations may increase due to these effects of climate change. In this study, a method for estimating the future risks of river flood and inundation was developed based on a general numerical model, in which the future river flood discharge was calculated by a climate scenario using the transfer function method. It was applied in Naka and Kuji rivers areas in Ibaraki, Japan, and revealed that the maximum inundation area will not change much because rain fall will not change in these areas but the rate of inundation during the flood will accelerate., Japan Society of Civil Engineers

In order to consider various adaptation plans against floods, and estimate the floodamages, it is impottant to estimate the area, population, and land use. Thus, the GIS-based analysis of flood area was developed in this study for the ten river basins selected in this study. However, the geographic information had to be re-edited for each river basin, because they had been provided for each administrative area. Then, the flood simulations were carried out using the level flood method for the 10 coastal plain in Japan. Proceedings of the international symposium Mitigation and adaptation of climate-change-induced natural disasters, Sep. 2007 - Atoll island vulnerability to flooding and inundation revealed by historical reconstruction: Fongafale Islet, Funafuti atoll, Tuvalu
Yamano; H.; H. Kayanne; T. Yamaguchi; Y. Kuwahara; H. Yokoki; H. Shimazaki; and M. Chikamori, The reef islands formed on coral atolls are generally small, low, and flat, with elevations of only a few meters. These islands are thus highly vulnerable to elevated sea levels caused by extreme events and global warming. Such vulnerability was recently evidenced at Fongafale Islet, the capital of Tuvalu, when it flooded during accelerated spring high tides possibly related to sea level rise caused by global warming. Many factors, not only environmental but also economic and social, determine the vulnerability of an island to sea level rise. In this study, we used data spanning 108 yrs to reconstruct changes in topography, land use/cover, population, and the distribution of buildings at Fongafale Islet. The results indicate that the vulnerability of Fongafale Islet relates to its original landform characteristics: the central part of the island was formerly dominated by swampland that flooded at high tides. Fongafale Islet experienced greater population in-migration and centralization beginning in the 1970s following the independence of Tuvalu and Kiribati. Migrants were also responding to declines in overseas mining operations and limited options for paid employment. As the population increased, construction took place in vulnerable swampland areas. Our results clearly demonstrate that examinations of global environmental issues should focus on characteristics specific to the region of interest. These characteristics should be specified using historical reconstruction to understand and address the vulnerability of an area to global environmental changes. 2007, [Reviewed] - Evaluation of various satellite sensors for waterline extraction in a coral reef environment: Majuro Atoll, Marshall Islands
Hiroya Yamano; Hiroto Shimazaki; Tsuneo Matsunaga; Albon Ishoda; Caleb McClennen; Hiromune Yokoki; Kazuhiko Fujita; Yoko Osawa; Hajime Kayanne, The ability of five satellite sensor bands (IKONOS band 4, Terra ASTER bands 3 and 4, and Landsat ETM+ bands 4 and 5) was examined to extract the waterline at coral reef coasts (Majuro Atoll, Marshall Islands) using different wavelength regions (near infrared [NIR] and shortwave infrared [SWIR]) and different spatial resolutions (4, 15, and 30 m). After performing georeferencing and normalization of the images, density slicing was used to extract the waterline. Comparisons of extracted waterline positions with ground-level data for eight transects and global positioning system (GPS) tracks of the island shorelines showed that NIR bands were superior to SWIR bands because of the characteristics of the coral reef coasts, including a lack of foam and suspended sediments (which can affect the NIR wavelength region, if present) and the presence of remnant water on reef flats during low tide (which can affect the SWIR wavelength region). A linear relationship was found between the estimation errors of waterline positions and the spatial resolutions of the NIR sensors. Analysis on estimation errors and image costs showed that Terra ASTER band 3 was the most cost-effective sensor for extracting waterlines with reasonable accuracy. The results serve as general guidelines for using satellite-derived data to estimate intertidal topography and detect and monitor shorelines in coral reef environments. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Nov. 2006, [Reviewed] - Impacts of sea-level rise on coastal physical and ecological systems: predictions and responses
Nobuo Mimura; Hiromune Yokoki, Global warming-induced climate change and sea-level rise impose serious impacts on natural and human systems in coastal zones. This paper introduced the most recent information on these impacts based on the IPCC Third Assessment Report (2001) and Comprehensive Assessment for Japan (2003). The impacts studied were coastal erosion, damage of coral reefs and mangroves, and vulnerability of coastal cities in the Asia and Pacific region. As a precursor impact of warming, high-latitude coasts were also examined since they are already suffering from exacerbated erosion. As the countermeasures to adjust coastal systems to the impacts are called adaptation, conditions for planning and implementation were discussed. To establish a comprehensive strategy for responses to global warming, discussions on the threshold of the impacts and adaptive capacities of natural and human systems were included.,

Analyses of topographic data for whole the coast indicated that about 300,000 m(3) sediments in total had been transported northward on the shoreline area since 1998. The changes of the surf similarity parameter calculated using cross-shore profile data and wave data revealed that the recent accelerated beach erosion was caused by both southerly high wave energy and breaker-type change due to steepening of foreshore slope., WORLD SCIENTIFIC PUBL CO PTE LTD

Global Environmental Research, 2005 -
Japan Society of Civil Engineers
Japan Society of Civil Engineers

Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Asia and Pacific Coasts, 02 Mar. 2004 -
Japan Society of Civil Engineers
Nov. 2003 - Deducing the characteristics of large-scale beach topographic change by complex principal component analysis
Yokoki; H. and N. Mimura, Complex principal component analysis (CPCA) is applied to a series of topographic survey data obtained in Kashimanada Coast, Japan, in order to investigate the characteristics of the beach topographic change. A new parameter called "local ratio of contribution" was introduced to identify a predominant mode of CPCA to characterise the topographic change at each surveyed point. Consequently, the trend of topographic change on the coast were evaluated in detail by using the temporal and spatial functions as well as the local ratio of contribution., American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
Japan Society of Civil Engineers
