電 学 論 D, Jul. 2016, [Reviewed] - Full-bridge/half-bridge switching inverter with IGBT Leg and MOSFET leg for all-metals induction heating systems
Hiroyuki Shoji; Junpei Uruno; Masayuki Isogai; Takeshi Yanagidaira, An induction heating system is proposed as a new circuit topology for induction heating cookers that can be used with all metals. This system has the mechanism to drive an IGBT and a MOSFET in parallel that switch the inverter between full-bridge or modified half-bridge configuration according to the cookware material. When cookware made of a low-resistivity material such as copper or aluminum is heated, the inverter is switched to the half-bridge configuration, which turns ofT the IGBT leg earlier than the MOSFET leg. When cookware made of a high-resistivity material such as iron or magnetic stainless steel is heated, the inverter is switched to the full-bridge configuration. We confirmed a turn-off timing for the IGBT where the loss of the switching element in the parallel drive was minimized by an experiment. The proposed inverter effectively improved the electricity conversion efficiency for all metals pan heating with the utilized IGBT and MOSFET legs., Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan
IEEJ Transactions on Industry Applications, 2016, [Reviewed] - All-metals induction heating system with switching between full-bridge and half-bridge inverter configurations
Hiroyuki Shoji; Junpei Uruno; Masayuki Isogai; Takeshi Yanagidaira, An induction heating system is proposed as a new circuit topology for induction-heating cookers that can be used with all metals. This system has a fixed number of work coil turns that switch the inverter between full-bridge or modified half-bridge configuration according to the cookware material and power setting. When heating cookware made of a low-resistivity material such as copper or aluminum, the inverter is switched to the half-bridge configuration
when cookware made of a high-resistivity material such as iron or magnetic stainless steel is heated at high power, the inverter is switched to the full-bridge configuration. The buck converter, which is placed in the stage before the inverter, controls the DC link voltage to adjust the power. In addition, the boost converter placed in the stage before the buck converter is switched between passive filter and active filter modes to reduce the harmonics of the commercial input current and hence improve the power factor. Tests confirm the power conversion efficiency of the inverter and boost and buck converters as well as the power control characteristics of the inverter. High efficiency over a wide power range when heating an iron pan was also confirmed., Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan
IEEJ Journal of Industry Applications, 2016, [Reviewed] - Buck-boost-full-bridge inverter for all-metals induction heating cookers
Hiroyuki Shoji; Junpei Uruno; Masayuki Isogai; Takeshi Yanagidaira, In this paper, we present a buck-boost-full-bridge (BBFB) inverter that is a novel circuit topology developed for all-metals induction heating cookers. A power device of a full bridge inverter serves as a part of the H-bridge PAM (Pulse Amplitude Modulation) converter, thus reducing the number of power devices. In iron pan heating, it consists of a buck converter stage and a full bridge inverter stage with a boost function. On the other hand, in aluminum pan heating, it completely becomes independent of the H-bridge PAMconverter stage and a single-ended push-pull (SEPP) inverter stage. For iron pan heating, the power conversion efficiency showed an approximately flat characteristic in a wide power range., Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan
IEEJ Journal of Industry Applications, 2016, [Reviewed] - Modular Pulse Generator With Capability of Capacitive Energy Recovery
T. Yanagidaira; T. Kikuchi and K. Higashiyama, Lead, A repetitive high-voltage pulse generator, consisting of many modules capable of recovering capacitive energy at the pulse termination phase, was developed for use with a capacitive load. The module essentially consists of two capacitors, one for energy storage and the other for energy recovery, and two switches. The first switch delivers energy from the storage capacitor to the capacitive load in a pulse of variable width in the 100-ns range, and then the second switch transfers the residual charge on the capacitive load to the recovery capacitor. The experimental results for metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor-based modules rated at 600 V and 96 A are described. Using the six modules connected in parallel, pulses of width 600 ns and amplitude 10 kV were produced on a 50 Omega-100-pF load, and more than 50% of the capacitive energy was recovered., IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC

電気学会論文誌A, Apr. 2009, [Reviewed] - Generation of Anode Spot in Low-Current DC Vacuum Arcs by the Effect of Embedded Magnet in the Anode
Kazuki Kobayashi; W.M.R.R. Wanninayake; Takeshi Yanagidaira; Naoyuki Sato and Koichi Tsuruta, Experiments were conducted with the aim of keeping low-current DC vacuum arcs stable. A permanent columnar magnet was embedded in the anode and a permanent disk-shaped magnet was arranged behind the anode. As result, the arc plasma is strongly constricted to a column and a light emitting point appeared on the anode surface. Generation of the anode spot was confirmed by detecting anode metal vapor and ions using mass and spectroscopic analyses under low-current arcs of less than 20 A. Kengo Yanagi; Satoru Shibata; Takeshi Yanagidaira and Koichi Tsuruta, Effects of magnetic field on duration and dynamics of low-current DC vacuum arcs, less than 20 A, were examined. Without a magnetic field, the cathode spot moves at random on the cathode surface and the arc voltage is constant for increasing gap length up to 30 mm. In the axial magnetic field. the arc plasma was constricted and the arc voltage rose with increasing gap length. When a magnet was arranged behind the cathode, the cathode spot rotated in the opposite direction of the Lorentz force (j x B) on the edge of the cathode. Electrical Engineering in Japan, Oct. 2007 - Effect of Axially Symmetric Magnetic Fields for Dynamics of Low-Current DC Vacuum Arc Plasma
Koichi Tsuruta; Kengo Yanagi; Satoru Shibata; Takeshi Yanagidaira and Takashi Ikehata, In this paper, effects of four types of axially symmetric magnetic fields on the dynamics of low-current de vacuum arc plasma, which is less than 30 A, were examined. Arcs were ignited by the opening of the butt contacts made of zinc. In the axial magnetic field, the arc plasma was restricted within a column, and the arc voltage rose with increasing gap length. When a magnet was arranged behind the cathode, the cathode spot rotated in the opposite direction to the Lorentz force (-J x B) on the edge of the circular-rod cathode. On the other hand, when a magnet was arranged behind the anode, the arc plasma was constricted on the anode side, and the lifetimes of the arcs became longer, although the arc voltage rose with increasing gap length. The compression effect of the axial component of the magnetic field was analyzed by introducing a simple magnetic piston model, and the experimental diameters of the arc column showed a good agreement with the model., IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC

Copper electrodes were used and the are current was less than 50 A. Waveforms of the voltage and current between the electrodes at the moment of are ignition and during the are continuation were measured. It was confirmed that, for the ignition of the are, a voltage which was larger than a critical value should appear between the electrodes at the moment of the opening of the electrodes. The lifetime of the arc is short, less than 1 s in the present condition, and increases with an increase in arc current and output voltage of the current source. Review of Scientific Instruments, 2000 - Quantitative measurement of X-ray images with a gated microchannel plate system in a z-pinch plasma experiment (共著)
B Shan; T Yanagidaira; K Shimoda; K Hirano, A multiframe, gated pinhole system capable of quantitative acquisition for pulsed soft x rays is described and tested. The system based on a gated microchannel plate (MCP) is employed to observe the evolution of z-pinch plasma in a plasma focus facility with a time resolution of similar to 220 ps. The quantitative relationship between x-ray source intensity and the recorded images has been investigated. To make a quantitative measurement, the phosphor screen current was measured to calculate the total electrons output from the MCP, which is proportional to both the incident x-ray intensity and the intensity of the recorded images. Furthermore, by taking into account the pinhole geometry, MCP gain and system spectral response, a quantitative calibration of the x-ray images has been established. We have employed the system to observe the plasma evolution in a plasma focus facility. An order of similar to 10(16) photons/(s mm(2) mrad(2)) soft x-ray emission within 6-14 Angstrom was observed in a neon puffed experiment with time resolved four successive frames. Review of Scientific Instruments, 1999 - Spectroscopic Study of Soft X-Ray Sources Generated in a Plasma Focus with Neon Gas Puffing (共著)
T Yanagidaira; T Yamamoto; K Hirano, Soft X-ray emitting spots (hot spots) generated in a plasma focus with a gas puffing are investigated using a streak mode imaging system for the soft X-ray region and a convex Bragg spectrometer which enables time resolved measurement. Using the imaging system, the typical size and lifetime of the hot spots in the focused neon plasma were measured to be similar to 1 mm in diameter, 13 mm in length and with a 5 similar to 8 ns lifetime, approximately. The full width at half-maximum of the duration of the NeX (12.19 Angstrom) 1s-2p and NeIX (13.447 Angstrom) 1s(2)-1s2p lines measured with the spectrometer agree with that measured with the imaging system. The soft X-ray emission started in the latter half of the plasma sustaining time measured by visible streak image and extinguished almost at the same time as the visible image. In the case of neon plasma; generation of the soft X-rays is not ascribed to the disruption of the plasma column, but to the growth of the macroscopic instabilities in the plasma column. After the disruption, the soft X-rays are not observed at all. The electron temperature and the density of the hot spots were estimated by several methods giving similar to 0.5 keV and in order of 10(21)/cm(3), respectively., PHYSICAL SOC JAPAN
Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, 1999 - Spectroscopic Investigation of Z-Pinch with a Spatial and Temporal Resolution (共著)
T Yanagidaira; T Yamamoto; B Shan; K Hirano, Soft X-rays generated by a plasma focus device with an Ar gas puff are studied using a composite system which consists of an imaging Bragg spectrometer and a soft X-ray high speed imaging system. Two modes of soft X-ray emitting sources in Z-pinch plasma, filamentary and scattered spots, are generated in this experiment depending on the delay time from the gas puff to the main discharge. Spectroscopic observation revealed that even the case of the filamentary mode is not really filamentary but is actually X-ray emitting spots (hot spots) densely arranged in a column along the electrode axis. By using the soft X-ray high speed imaging system, the streak mode display is restructured from the data obtained in a single shot, Temporally resolved observations in streak mode showed that a spot appeared at a point near the electrode face first, then different hot spots appeared successively along the axis and in a direction away from the electrode face. It is clarified that the hot spot is a small region from which intense H-like and He-like spectral lines are emitted. The size and the distance between spots are from 0.1 to 0.5 mm in radius and similar to 0.5 mm in length, respectively. The lifetime of the spots is 5 similar to 10 ns. The average electron temperature and density calculated from the intensity ratio of those spectral lines are similar to 1.8 keV and 1.7 x 10(22) /cm(3), respectively. They did not show a notable change along the axis., PHYSICAL SOC JAPAN

T Yanagidaira; K Shimoda; Y Ono; K Hirano, Correlation between soft x-ray emission and dynamic plasma behavior is discussed for a plasma focus device with injected neon. Intense H-like and He-like lines from neon are radiated during an interval when the plasma appears from a visible-light streak camera to be stable. The peak of the soft x-ray signal coincides with the micropinch generated in the plasma column, and the emission ends simultaneously with the extinction of the visible light. The electron temperature and density, which are obtained from spectroscopic analysis, are similar to 0.5 keV and similar to 10(22) cm(-3), respectively. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics.
