Masahito Minagi; Kei Tabaru; Hamish Innes-Brown; Manae Kubo; Taiki Komoda; Yuko Kataoka; Mizuo Ando, Objectives:
Listening effort is the mental effort that increases in situations where listening is challenging. Objective indicators are needed to assess listening effort, but no established testing methods can be performed in a daily environment. We used a glasses-type wearable device (JINS MEME, JINS Inc., Tokyo, Japan) equipped with an electrooculography sensor and an acceleration/angular velocity sensor to measure the number of eye blinks and changes in head tilt angle during listening under noise and investigated its use as an objective indicator of listening effort.
Design:
The study included 16 normal-hearing individuals (mean = 27.94 years, SD = 7.18 years). They wore a glasses-type wearable device and were asked to repeat a passage presented at a sound pressure level of 60 dB sound pressure level. Three conditions were performed with signal to noise ratios (SNRs) of 0, −5, and −10 dB SNR. The number of eye blinks and head tilt angle were measured during the time spent listening to the conversation (listening period) and the time spent repeating it after listening (response period). After each task, the effort and motivation required for that trial were evaluated subjectively on a scale. Friedman tests were performed on the percentage of correct words repeated as well as subjective scores for effort and motivation based on the SNR. A linear mixed model was used to evaluate the effects of SNR and interval (listening period and response period) on the number of eye blinks and head tilt angle. In addition, correlation analysis was performed on each indicator.
Results:
As the SNR decreased, the correct answer rate and motivation score decreased, and the effort score increased. These changes were significantly greater at −10 dB SNR than in the other 2 conditions. The eye blink rate was significantly higher in the −5 dB SNR condition than at 0 dB SNR, and was significantly higher in the response period than in the listening period, regardless of SNR. The head tilt angle was tilted forward when the SNR decreased in the listening period and response period sections. No significant correlation was observed between the indicators.
Conclusions:
The number of eye blinks increased during listening in noise, but decreased with decreased subjective motivation. The head tilt angle tilted forward when the noise load increased, indicating that the participant tilted more toward the sound source. The changes in the number of eye blinks and head tilt angle during listening in noise may be objective indicators related to listening effort that can be detected quantitatively and simply using a glasses-type wearable device., Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health)

特殊教育学研究, 2024, [Reviewed] - Gaze Patterns of Deaf and Hard-of-hearing Children Reading Fingerspelling
TABARU KEI; WATANABE MISAKI; IGUCHI AKIKO; SHOJI HIROAKI, Lead, This study investigated the gaze patterns of deaf and hard-of-hearing children during a fingerspelling word-reading task that involved lipreading. Specifically, the study examined how gaze patterns varied based on the proximity of the fingerspelled words to the mouth and the words’ semantic content. The results indicated that when the fingerspelled words were presented at a distance from the mouth, the children focused their gaze on the fingers. However, the children tended to show similar gaze time to the fingers and face when the fingerspelled words were presented close to the mouth. This finding suggests that children shifted their gaze and integrated visual information from the fingers and the face when reading fingerspelling. Furthermore, children with higher hearing thresholds tended to gaze at the face longer than those with lower thresholds. These findings imply that such children use their acute peripheral vision to read fingerspelling while simultaneously capturing lip movements with their central vision., Japanese Society for Physiological Psychology and Psychophysiology

It is important that reasonable accommodations be made for students with disabilities, without compromising the inherent and necessary objectives, content, and functions of education for all. For the present study, after multiple Internet searches, quantitative content analyses were conducted on the descriptions of inherent requirements for course completion in the websites of Australian universities. More than 80% of the universities included in the searches had policies that described the inherent requirements for courses and the process for providing reasonable adjustments. Additionally, at some universities, details regarding the inherent requirements had been developed for courses in human health services, such as nursing. Quantitative content analysis revealed that the inherent requirements did not include auditory or motor skills in several courses of study. These results suggest that when Japanese institutions of higher education are considering reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities, it may be useful to clarify the objectives, content, and functions of education with reference to the inherent requirements for course completion that have been specifıed at some universities in Australia.

田原 敬; 原島 恒夫; 小林 優子; 堅田 明義, Lead,In this study, we discuss the relationship between the amount of experience of hearing environmental sounds and the clarity of the auditory imagery of environmental sounds in people with hearing impairment. A total of 10 people with hearing impairment participated in this study. They performed a task in which they needed to indicate whether the presented picture and presented sound fit each other by pressing a button. The reaction time for judging whether a picture and sound fit each other was measured from the time of presenting the sound until the button was pressed. The reaction time was shorter when the participants heard sounds that they had experienced hearing many times before. These results suggest that the judgment improved because the auditory imagery was clearly evoked by presentation of pictures corresponding to environmental sounds that the participants had heard many times before. Hence, it is very important to encourage people with hearing impairment to pay attention to environmental sounds in their daily lives to promote the development of auditory imagery. Further studies are needed to examine the features of environmental sounds for which people with hearing impairment can create auditory imagery easily, and also for developing effective ways to create auditory imagery of environmental sounds.

Four 4 years old children and five 5 years old children with hearing impairments participated in this study. Repair strategies which deployed by previous researches were used to categorize subjects' reactions into "Repetition" "Addition" "Substitution" "Feedback" and "Other". Firstly, subjects' reactions were discussed by the repair strategies. Secondly, categories of communication mode were used to discuss whether there were nonlinguistic behavior contained in "Other". Finally, nonlinguistic behavior reactions were discussed by using the repair strategies. Results showed that the use of repair strategy increased in the order of "Feedback" "Substitution" "Repetition" "Addition". While, 20 reactions were categorized into "Other", through the analysis of communication mode, 14 nonlinguistic behavior were observed in the "Other" reactions. According to the analysis of repair strategy, 1 reaction was categorized into "Addition", 12 reactions were "Feedback", 1 reaction was "Other". Therefore, subjects used nonlinguistic behavior to repair communication breakdown as well. This result suggest that, in the further discussion on repair strategy of children with hearing impairments, not only linguistic behavior, but nonlinguistic behavior should be discussed in consideration.

田原 敬; 原島 恒夫; 小林 優子; 堅田 明義, Lead, This paper examines and classifies the studies on environmental sound identification by individuals with hearing impairments. A further study is needed to consider cognitive strategies of environmental sounds identification by individuals with hearing impairments. Furthermore, we should comprehensively examine cognitive strategies focusing on not only the sound features of environmental sounds but also on other information like context. The technologies of hearing aids and cochlear implants progress and auditory ability of individuals with hearing impairments become better. In such a current state, it is necessary to reconsider the environmental sound recognition by individuals with hearing impairments and offer the best support., 障害科学学会
障害科学研究, Mar. 2012, [Reviewed] - Effects of aided audible frequencies and contextual information on identification of environmental sounds with hearing impairments: Analysis of individual cases
Tabaru, K; Harashima, T; Kobayashi, Y; Katada, A, Lead, The purpose of the present study was to investigate how people with hearing impairments identify environmental sounds. Individuals with hearing impairments took environmental sound identification tests under two conditions: (a) only auditory information, and (b) both auditory and contextual (visual) information. The results revealed that when focusing on auditory information, participants tended to be very good at using temporal information. Moreover, both aided audiogram configurations and a hearing threshold level of 2kHz compared to other frequencies were noted as possible factors enabling identification of environmental sounds. Furthermore, strategies used by individuals with hearing impairments for identifying environmental sounds when contextual information exists can be classified into three types: (a) relying on auditory information as a clue, while not being good at utilizing contextual information, (b) relying on contextual information as a clue, while not being able to understand environmental sounds from only auditory information, and (c) utilizing both auditory and contextual information as clues, and using the information properly according to the situation., The Japanese Association of Special Education
