  • Rotational Property of a Ball in Flight by using Built-in Acceleration Sensors
NAGAOKA Hiroyuki; HIYAMA Rio; TSUBOI Kazuhiro; NODA Shigeho; HIMENO Ryutaro,

Direct measurement of the rotational characteristics in flight of a baseball-like ball is performed by using a built-in acceleration sensor unit. This sensor unit consists of one three-axis sensor for low acceleration and three sensors for high acceleration. In the preliminary experiment, we determine the moment of inertia of the ball set up the sensor unit and it has different values in each rotation axis. At the same time, the accuracy of sensor outputs is confirmed. In order to investigate the variation of the rotation axis of the ball in flight, sensor outputs are simulated. As the result, measured outputs are reproduced successfully in the case of giving the time variation of the rotation axis obtained in the flight experiment, while the outputs are rather different under the condition of the fixed rotation axis. Furthermore, we study the temporal behavior of the translational acceleration of the ball and clarify the periodic variation of the direction of this acceleration component. These results suggest that the rotation axis of balls is varying in flight.

  • Measurement of rotational property for a baseball in flight with acceleration sensors
NAGAOKA Hiroyuki; OGINO Naoya; TSUBOI Kazuhiro; NODA Shigeho; HIMENO Ryutaro,

We attempt to measure the rotational characteristics of a ball in flight by using a baseball-like ball with a built-in acceleration sensor unit which consists of one three-axis sensor for low G and three sensors for High G. Two approaches for obtaining the rotational speed and its axis of the ball from outputs of the sensors are formulated; one is based on rotational component in the acceleration outputs and the other is based on translational one. We employ in the present approaches the assumption that the time variation of rotation axis can be neglected because it is sufficiently slow. In flight experiments, we obtain nine time series data of acceleration for straight and curve ball trajectories, respectively. By using these experimental data, we estimate the rotational speed and rotation axis with the present two algorithms. As the results, it is shown that the rotation axis keeps almost constant during the flight in each algorithm's result and this means the validity of our assumption on rotation axis. The difference in the rotation axis obtained by the two algorithms ranges from 3.5 to 10.6 degrees in the straight ball data while it does from 3.9 to 18.8 degrees in the data of curve ball. Also, the averaged rotational speed in the nine trials is 12.56 rps in the straight data, and the difference between the algorithms indicates 0.10 rps (after pitching) and 0.17 rps (before catching). In the curve ball data, the averaged value and the difference between the algorithms are 19.22 rps, 0.10 rps (after pitching) and 0.14 rps (before catching), respectively. The present result shows the decrease of the rotational speed along flight trajectories, and it is probably the effect of aerodynamic torque.

  • A Model for Merging Sections in Transportation Systems and Its Analysis
Takahiro Hoshino; Chuan Tian; Takafumi Komuro; Kazuhiro Tsuboi; Yoshio Hamamatsu, This paper proposes a model for merging sections in transportation systems and then analyzes traffic flow under this model. For this analysis, vehicles are represented by an idealized model based on a Markov chain model. Vehicles arrive at the merging section randomly in either of two inflow lines. When a vehicle arrives at the merging section, if no vehicle is present in the other line, then the vehicle must wait in order to connect with another vehicle on the other line before entering. In this merging section model, the queue length is restricted according to the travel time from the origin to destination. The mean queue length and mean queuing delay at the two inflow lines are explicitly derived here. Kazuhiro Tsuboi; Takahiro Hoshino; Yoshio Hamamatsu, Lead, We investigate a simple mechanical model in which a particle is projected from a platform moving horizontally with constant speed. This projection model has three variables and includes the constraint between the initial speed and initial angle appeared in the projection with run-up effect in sports. Under the initial condition given by this model, we derive analytically the projection angle at which the flight distance is maximized. • A control strategy with a waiting time limit at a merging section in a personal rapid transit system
Takafumi Komuro; Takahiro Hoshino; Kazuhiro Tsuboi; Yoshio Hamamatsu, This paper deals with a merging section in a personal rapid transit system, and a new control strategy that allows a waiting time limit is proposed as a method to reduce the waiting queue. Vehicles arrive at a merging section from main and sub lines. Since vehicles on the main line have priority, a queue is formed on the sub line in order to avoid the collision of vehicles. Vehicles on the main line need to stop when the waiting time of the last vehicle on the sub line queue exceeds the limit. The relation between the waiting time limit and the behavior of traffic on the main and sub lines (characterized by the mean queue length and queuing delay) is derived explicitly by using a Markov chain model. Moreover, the control strategy for the queuing delay on each line is developed on the basis of the obtained relation. We compare the results obtained by using the present strategy with those obtained by using another strategy. The comparison shows the validity of the present strategy in cases where the probability of vehicle arrival on the sub line is low., Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan

  • Analysis of traffic congestion by considering merging on entry lines in transportation system
Takahiro Hoshino; Kazuhiro Tsuboi; Yoshio Hamamatsu, In a transportation system, a merging control strategy is necessary to avoid collisions between vehicles at a merging section with entry lines. In this study, under the assumption that each entry line is assigned time-independent priority, we analyze traffic congestion with a stochastic model. A quantitative estimation of the congestion is successfully obtained in terms of the average queue length and the average queuing delay. On the basis of analytical results, we propose a control strategy that changes the priority periodically. Using simulation, it is clarified that the proposed control strategy gives arbitrary values of the queue length and the queuing delay on each line. (c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. • Application of Eulerian Approach to Simulate Hard Rime Accretion
Kazuhiro Tsuboi & Shigeo Kimura, Lead, We attempt to apply the Eulerian approach to simulation of ice adhesion on structures and to investigate macroscopic models for ice accretion processes. The methodology of the Eulerian approach in icing simulation is summarized and two technical difficulties are pointed out: the accuracy deterioration in representing the shape of accreted ice, and the stiffness of unsteady simulations. A method of adequately generating grid points overcomes the former difficulty while the latter remains an unsolved problem. Some computational examples obtained with the Eulerian simulation are presented. In the present simulations, we consider the hard rime accretion, i.e., an ice deposit formed from the impingement of super-cooled water droplets, and thus it can clarify the meanings of the macroscopic models for the local impingement efficiency and the growing direction of ice. The shapes of accreted hard rime on a stationary airfoil and the accretion rates are simulated, and they are compared with experimental results. The computational results show the importance of the velocity component of uniform flow direction in the incoming droplet velocity. Also, the local impingement efficiency along a cylinder oscillating perpendicular to a uniform air flow is obtained. The present simulations demonstrate the potential of the Eulerian approach in the prediction of ice adhesion phenomena. (C) Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, 2012, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD

  • Operation of Vehicles in AGV System and Method for Analyzing Operation
Takahiro Hoshino; Kazuhiro Tsuboi; Kazuo Yamanaka; Yoshio Hamamatsu, It is important to discuss the behavior of traffic at merging sections for the design and realization of an automated guided vehicle system (AGVS). In this study, we deal with a merging section of the AGVS by considering the time limit for the merging of vehicles. Near the merging section, the traffic flow in one direction forms a queue to avoid collisions between vehicles. We present an improvement of the control strategy proposed in previous research. However, since it is difficult to analyze the mathematical model of the merging section, analysis can be performed only for the case in which the time limit is set to the least values. We also propose a method for analyzing the model for an arbitrary time limit by using a linear recurrence relation. We discuss quantitatively the influence of the time limit on the average queue length and the detour rate. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. • The Optimum Angle of Takeoff in Long Jump with Vertical Displacement at Landing
TSUBOI Kazuhiro, Lead, In long jump, it is possible to estimate a distance between takeoff and landing by assuming that the center of mass of a long jumper in aerial phase moves along a trajectory of projectile. Based on the assumption, we obtain an approximate trajectory of the jumper as a perturbed solution of flat aerial path, in which the effect of air drag is included as the linear form. Also, a maximization problem is formulated from the trajectory and the optimum angle of takeoff is theoretically derived. Then, we introduce two parameters, the horizontal velocity of the center of mass and the takeoff velocity into the present model of takeoff. In particular, the solution of the optimum angle includes the effect of vertical displacement at landing which affects significantly a distance of the aerial phase. The distance of the aerial phase and the takeoff angle are estimated in several cases of measured data. The results of the estimation show the effectiveness of the present solutions., The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers

HOSHINO Takahiro; INOUE Kousuke; TSUBOI Kazuhiro; HAMAMATSU Yoshio, This paper deals with a merging section of Personal Rapid Transit system with bulk arrival. Vehicles
arrive at a merging section from a main line and a sub line. Basically, vehicles on the main line have priority.
Therefore a queue is formed only on the sub line. In this situation, the queuing delay on the sub line may
become extremely long. We propose a control strategy whereby vehicles on the main line are usually not
stopped; vehicles on the main line are only stopped when the number of waiting vehicles on the sub line
exceeds some specific number. This specific number is a sort of threshold. Thus, queues are formed on the
main line and the sub line, respectively. The both of queuing delays are controlled by the threshold. The
optimal value of threshold is obtained from the result of analyzing the Markov chain model.

  • Lateral Excitation between Dissimilar Orientation Columns for Ongoing Subthreshold Membrane Oscillations in Primary Visual Cortex
NAKAMURA Yuto; TSUBOI Kazuhiro and HOSHINO Osamu, Primary visual cortex (V1) is the first stage of visual information processing; detection of particularly oriented bars. These elemental visual features are sent to higher visual regions including V2; in which their combinations Such as "corners" and "junctions" are processed. A recent study, has demonstrated that corners and T-junctions could be processed even at the early visual stage (V1), raising the question of why the binding of bars by V1 is necessary. We stimulated a V1 neural network model, in which the so-called "orientation-columns" were connected through both excitatory and inhibitory synapses. The lateral excitatory connections contributed not only to binding paired bars constituting corners but also to making membrane oscillations near firing-threshold during ongoing (spontaneous) neuronal activity periods. This ongoing subthreshold neuronal state led to accelerating the reaction speed of neurons to paired bar-stimuli. The lateral inhibitory connections effectively enhanced the selective responsiveness of neurons to the stimuli. We suggest that coordinated lateral excitation and inhibition between orientation-columns in V1 could send angular information such as corners and junctions, presented to retina, rapidly to the next stage V2 for its full and precise analyses., SPRINGER-VERLAG BERLIN

  • An analytic solution of projectile motion with the quadratic resistance law using the homotopy analysis method
Kazuki Yabushita; Mariko Yamashita; Kazuhiro Tsuboi, We consider the problem of two-dimensional projectile motion in which the resistance acting on an object moving in air is proportional to the square of the velocity of the object ( quadratic resistance law). It is well known that the quadratic resistance law is valid in the range of the Reynolds number: 1 x 10(3) similar to 2 x 10(5) ( for instance, a sphere) for practical situations, such as throwing a ball. It has been considered that the equations of motion of this case are unsolvable for a general projectile angle, although some solutions have been obtained for a small projectile angle using perturbation techniques. To obtain a general analytic solution, we apply Liao's homotopy analysis method to this problem. The homotopy analysis method, which is different from a perturbation technique, can be applied to a problem which does not include small parameters. We apply the homotopy analysis method for not only governing differential equations, but also an algebraic equation of a velocity vector to extend the radius of convergence. Ultimately, we obtain the analytic solution to this problem and investigate the validation of the solution., IOP PUBLISHING LTD

坪井一洋; 木村茂雄, Lead, Employing unsteady 2-fluid equation of multiphase flows as a mathematical model of flows including super-cooled droplets, we apply Eulerian approach to ice-accretion problem. A coupled system of equations for airstream and suspended water droplets is solved numerically with FDM and local impingement efficiency (mass flux of droplets on a body surface) is estimated. The temporal change of the shape of accreted ice is obtained from the local impingement efficiency and the renewal of grid distribution is performed. We also describe some difficulties on Eulerian approach in icing problems. These are mathematical property of the basic equations, the deterioration of representing the body shape due to the lack of grid point and stiffness due to large difference of characteristic time scales. In particular, the second difficulty is overcome by the method for grid interpolation. Hard-rime accretion on a NACA0015 air foil is simulated by means of the present procedure. In particular, the effect of two different definitions of local impingement efficiency and two different growth directions to the accreted ice is investigated. Comparison with an experimental observation shows that the simulated ice shape of local impingement efficiency with the uniform velocity direction and normal direction growth reproduces successfully the experimental results., Japan Society for Simmulation Technology

In the case of small Stokes number, in which particle impingement does not occur, there exists the exact solution of the flow field of particle phase is obtained. Perturbed solution is also obtained in the reciprocal of Stokes number when Stokes number is large enough. Comparison between numerical results and these solutions shows good agreement and the peak of particle density appears near the threshold of particle impingement to the body surface.

  • Aerodynamic characteristics of an iced cup-shaped body
KIMURA Shigeo; ABE ken'ichi; TSUBOI Kazuhiro; Tammelin Bengt; SUZUKI Kohji, The negative effects of ice accretion on wind speed measurements by a cup anemometer have been indicated by analyses of field test results amd already been studied numerically and experimentally by the authors of this paper. Implementation of calculations of the dynamic behavior of a cup anemometer with or without ice was carried out employing the fictitiously altered aerodynamic characteristics of an iced or clean cup based on NACA test results for a conical cup because no information covering the aerodynamic characteristics of an iced cup had been provided up to that point. In light of the absence of solid data, wind tunnel tests of the aerodynamic characteristics of iced cup-shaped bodies were performed. Imitated ice models were built and used for the test based on test results from an icing wind tunnel test conducted separately. We found that, depending on its amount, ice accretion in dry-growth conditions results in big penalties to the aerodynamics of cup-shaped bodies, while ice deposits of wet growth cause little effect, regardless of the thickness of ice. • Numerical Study of the Effect of Droplet Distribution in Incompressible Droplet Flows
Tsuboi Kazuhiro; Kimura Shigeo, Lead, We investigate numerically the effect of droplet distribution according to the diameter in incompressible droplet flows. The basic equations of droplet flows with the distribution effect is. presented and it is shown that the effect is expressed by a coefficient C. This coefficient gives non-dimensional form of the averaged relaxation time of droplets motion based on the characteristic time of main flow in employing the Stokes law. Computations with a finite difference method are performed to flows around a circular cylinder and a NACA0015 airfoil with the angle of attack 0°, which makes clear the variation of the flow field according to the value of C. In particular, the collision efficiency of droplet is obtained as a function of C from the computational results, which shows the drastic change in the range of 0.01<
    C<
    10. Our conclusion, therefore, is that the distribution of droplets becomes one of the important ingredients when the characteristic time of main flow is the same order as the relaxation time of droplets., American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc.

  • 装置周辺の空気の流れの可制御性とその制御法の一提案
白石昌武; 出山浩行; 柴田智和; 坪井一洋, Air fluctuation around the fine equipment system seems to be a kind of extremely low velocity air flow and is one of the major causes in deteriorating system working accuracies. Unfortunately there is no active means to control air fluctuation at present. This paper describes the controllability of air flow around the equipment assuming that the air flow dynamics is approximated by a linear equation under the low velocity viscous flow condition. With the verification of its controllability, several experiments are performed to confirm the possibility of air flow control by using smoke particles. Specifically, smoke particles are stimulated by the optical radiation pressure of Ar laser beam. Their behaviors are regulated by the optical system such as a convex lens and an ND filter with the number of stimulated smoke particles. The experimental results basically show the possibility of air flow control using an optical radiation pressure., The Japan Society for Precision Engineering

坪井一洋; ミハエル・トリベルスキー, Lead, A new approach to numerical integration of nonlinear PDE with two resonantly-coupling bands of slowly evolving modes, originated in the problem's symmetry, is developed. The bands are centered around a certain finite wavenumber and wavenumber equal to zero, respectively, that gives rise to a complicated spatiotemporal behaviour of solutions. The approach is based on reduction of the problem to a truncated set of coupled equations for Fourier-transforms of the order parameter supplemented, by exclusion of the slaved mode. Though the basic equation is stiff, an explicit time marching by Runge-Kutta method with some techniques is successfully performed. Application of the approach to the particular equation governing seismic waves yields solutions that display a new type of turbulence., The Japan Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics

  • On the Optimum Angle of Takeoff in Long jump.
坪井一洋, Lead, An approximate solution of orbit for long jump from takeoff to landing is obtained by considering the orbit as a projectile of a particle. The effect of air-drag is included as the linear form. Comparison with the exact solution of numerical integration shows the solution has good accuracy. Based on the solution, we can determine the optimum angle of takeoff successfully and esrimate the value from measured data., The Japan Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics

  • New Scenario for Transition to Turbulence ?
Michael Tribelsky; Kazuhiro Tsuboi, Numerical study of the one-dimensional nonlinear partial differential equation, equivalent to that proposed [Recent Advances in Engineering Science (Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 1989)] to describe longitudinal seismic waves, is presented. The equation has a threshold of short-wave instability and symmetry, providing slow long-wave dynamics. It is shown that the threshold of the short-wave instability corresponds to a point of ''continuous'' (second order) transition from a spatially uniform state to a chaotic regime. Thus, contrary to the conventional scenarios, turbulence arises from the spatially uniform state as a result of one and the only one supercritical bifurcation., AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC

  • Simulation of unsteady viscous flow around a lon-gitudinally oscillating cir-cular cylinder in a uniform flow.
    P. M. Rao; Kunio KUWAHARA; Kazuhiro TSUBOI, A finite difference simulation method for the time-dependent viscous incompressible flow around a longitudinally oscillating circular cylinder at Reynolds numbers of Re = 1000 and 4000 is presented. The Navier-Stokes equations in finite difference form are solved on a moving grid system, based on a time-dependent coordinate transformation. Solution of the vortex street development behind the cylinder is obtained when the cylinder remains stationary and also when oscillating. Evolution with time of the flow field, by means of streamlines, pressure contours, and vorticity contours, is studied. The computer results predict the lock-in phenomenon, which occurs when the oscillation frequency is around double the natural vortex-shedding frequency. The time-dependent lift and drag coefficients are obtained by the integration of the pressure and shear forces around the body. The drag, lift, and the displacement relations are also discussed., BUTTERWORTH-HEINEMANN
