The Neural Basis of a Cognitive Function That Suppresses the Generation of Mental Imagery: Evidence from a Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study
Hiroki Motoyama; Shinsuke Hishitani, Lead, This study elucidated the brain regions associated with the perception-driven suppression of mental imagery generation by comparing brain activation in a picture observation condition with that in a positive imagery generation condition. The assumption was that mental imagery generation would be suppressed in the former condition but not in the latter. The results show significant activation of the left posterior cingulate gyrus (PCgG) in the former condition compared to in the latter condition. This finding is generally consistent with a previous study showing that the left PCgG suppresses mental imagery generation. Furthermore, correlational analyses showed a significant correlation between the activation of the left PCgG and participants’ subjective richness ratings, which are a measure of the clarity of a presented picture. Increased activity in the PCgG makes it more difficult to generate mental imagery. As visual perceptual processing and visual imagery generation are in competition, the suppression of mental imagery generation leads to enhanced visual perceptual processing. In other words, the greater the suppression of mental imagery, the clearer the presented pictures are perceived. The significant correlation found is consistent with this idea. The brain mechanism that reduces the vividness of negative imagery
Hiroki Motoyama; Shinsuke Hishitani, Lead, The present study attempts to locate brain regions that are related to vividness control, a hypothesized mechanism that reduces the vividness of negative imagery by controlling memory retrieval and emotion processing. The results showed that BOLD response in the left posterior cingulate gyrus in the negative imagery condition, in which activation of vividness control mechanisms was considered to be strong, was greater than that in the positive imagery condition, in which the activation of control mechanisms was considered to be weak. Moreover, the activation of this region negatively correlated with the subjective vividness of negative imagery. These results support the idea that the posterior cingulate gyrus may be involved in the suppression of imagery generation. Several previous studies have suggested that the posterior cingulate cortex is involved in both memory and emotion processing. Does simile comprehension differ from metaphor comprehension? -A functional MRI Study-.

In contrast, recent psycholinguistic models have suggested that metaphors and similes may promote different comprehension processes. In this study, we investigated the neural substrates involved in the comprehension of metaphor and simile using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to evaluate whether simile comprehension differs from metaphor comprehension or not. In the metaphor and simile sentence conditions, higher activation was seen in the left inferior frontal gyrus. This result suggests that the activation in both metaphor and simile conditions indicates similar patterns in the left frontal region. The results also suggest that similes elicit higher levels of activation in the medial frontal region which might be related to inference processes, whereas metaphors elicit more right-sided prefrontal activation which might be related to figurative language comprehension., Elsevier

Some mechanisms responsible for the vividness of mental imagery: Suppressor, Closer, and other functions.
Hishitani Shinsuke; Motoyama Hiroki; Miyazaki Takuya, In this paper, studies concerned with the vividness of imagery are reviewed to elucidate the characteristics of vivid imagery, the mechanisms responsible for the vividness of imagery, and the factors that affect those mechanisms. From this review, the following characteristics of imagery can be identified: (a) imagery vividness can be defined by the amount of information in the image, and more perceptual information is in vivid than in dim imagery; (b) information structure in long-term memory (LTM) consists of meaning, affective information, perceptual information, and motoric information, and those components are interconnected; (c) imagery is generated in the image construction stages using perceptual information; (d) a mechanism called the Suppressor controls the channel capacity, or the flow of perceptual information from LTM to the image construction stages; (e) the degree of this suppression is affected by the emotional value of imagery computed on the basis of affective information stored in LTM; (f) motoric information in LTM also influences vividness by acting on the image construction stages. Given these characteristics, we propose a model of imagery processes in order to explain how a certain level of vividness is established for the visual mental image. Finally, some neural correlates of the model are described based on results from our latest fMRI studies, and problems remaining for further development of the model are discussed., Brandon House

An affective priming paradigm was used to experimentally investigate this question. An affective priming effect was observed in a lexical-decision task that was conducted after image generation for the prime noun in a picture-imagery condition, where the participants visualized the prime noun referent, although attention was only directed to the visual aspects of imagery processes. However, the effect was not observed in a letter-imagery condition where the participants visualized the spelling of the prime noun. These findings suggest that the generation of picture images usually involves the activation of both emotional information and visual information, and that the emotional information evoked by picture images is different from that evoked in word recognition., The Japanese Society for Cognitive Psychology

名詞のイメージ価と感情価の標準化
本山 宏希; 宮崎 拓弥; 菱谷 晋介, Lead, 宮崎・本山・菱谷 (2003)において感情価の標準化が行われた，名詞263語のイメージ価を調査した。本調査の信頼性を検討するため，同様の調査を行った先行研究との相関検定を行った。その結果，本調査で得られたイメージ価と佐久間・伊集院・伏見・辰巳・田中・天野・近藤 (2005)のイメージ価の間には，かなり高い相関関係が見られた。また，本調査とBrown & Ure (1969)の名詞の具象価，およびPaivio, Yuille, & Madigan (1968)のイメージ価との間には，統計的に有意ではあるが，中程度の相関関係しか見られなかった。補足的分析は，中程度の相関係数しか得られなかったのは，切断の効果によるものであることを示唆した。換言すれば，切断の効果が生じなければ，本調査と両先行研究間には，本来強い相関関係があると考えられる。これらの結果から，本調査の信頼性は高いと判断された。したがって，本調査と宮崎他(2003)の調査から，イメージ価と感情価について標準化された名詞群が得られたこととなる。これらのデータを用いれば，イメージの形成によって喚起される視覚情報量や感情の方向・強度を，イメージ価や感情価という客観的な指標を基に統制することが可能となるという意味で，実用性の高いデータが収集できたといえよう。The purpose of this study was to measure imagery values for 263 Japanese nouns, the emotional values of which had been measured by Miyazaki, Motoyama, and Hishitani (2003). Correlation analyses showed that the average ratings in the present study were highly correlated with those in Sakuma, Ijyuin, Fushimi, Tatsumi, Tanaka, Amano, and Kondou (2005), but only moderately correlated with those in Brown and Ure (1969) and Paivio, Yuille, and Madigan (1968). Additional analyses performed by us suggested that "truncation effects" might be the cause of the moderate correlations, and therefore strong correlations between our study and the previous studies could be obtained if truncation effects are removed. These results indicated that we obtain the reliable imagery values. Consequently, both imagery and emotional values for 263 Japanese nouns have been prepared. 名詞,形容詞の感情価-快-不快次元についての標準化-
Takuya Miyazaki; Hiroki Motoyama; Shinsuke hishitani, 本研究では，名詞，および形容語（形容詞・形容動詞）の感情刺激としての標準化データを提供することを目的とし，快─不快の次元について標準化を行った．Bradley and Lang(1999)，Brown and Ure(1969)，Rubin and Friendly(1986)をもとに，263 項目が選定された名詞の標準化データは，源泉となったそれぞれの調査データとの間に評定値，順位ともにかなり高い一致が見られた．他方，126 項目からなる形容語の標準化データは，対象が形容詞，形容動詞の２品詞に限定されているため，名詞句や動詞句といった様々な表現が混在したデータとは異なり，語彙決定課題や単語同定課題などの実験場面で容易に利用が可能となるデータが得られた．The purpose of this study was to obtain normative data on the positive-negative dimension of emotional nouns and epithets (adjectives and adjective verbs). We obtained data on 263 nouns that were selected on the basis of studies by Bradley and Lang (1999), Brown and Ure (1969), and Rubin and Friendly (1986). Both rating scale values and rankings of these nouns were highly correlated with the statistics of the original studies. Data on 126 epithets differed from previous studies because they were constructed from only two parts of speech. The information resulting from this study allows easier experimental control in the selection of emotional stimuli, especially in lexical decision tasks and word identification tasks.Key words: emotional value, noun, epithet, positive-negative dimension., 日本イメージ心理学会
