Journal of Thermal Science and Technology, 01 Jan. 2022, [Reviewed] - Separation of a binary gas mixture by thermal diffusion in a two-dimensional cascade of many small cavities
Takumi Saiki; Naoki Ono; Sohei Matsumoto; Shinya Watanabe, Last, A new method for separating a binary gas mixture, such as hydrogen and carbon dioxide, is proposed and investigated numerically and experimentally. As a pressure driven flow of the mixture goes through a two-dimensional Burgers cascade, the components are separated due to thermal diffusion and the amplifying effect of the cascade. Unlike traditional cascades in isotope separation, active elements like pumps are absent. The device is made thin enough so that the flow and the concentration distribution reaches an equilibrium within each cell. We have observed separation of up to about 9% in hydrogen concentration in our prototype array consisting of over 19,000 cavities placed under a 160-degree temperature difference., Elsevier

PHYSICA D-NONLINEAR PHENOMENA, Sep. 2016, [Reviewed] - A microfluidic device with a large-scale network structure for,high-performance fluid separation
Sohei Matsumoto; Shinya Watanabe; Tomohiro Higurashi; Naoki Ono, A micro fluidic device to realize the new fluid separation method, in which both high concentration and high yield can be achieved by constructing a network of numerous limited-performance separator elements, was designed and fabricated for the purpose of proof of concept. A hexagonal separator unit driven by potential gradient was proposed, enabling simultaneous fabrication of the large number of separator units and their connection required to obtain the desired concentration profile. A prototype device consisting of 36×360 separator units was fabricated by MEMS technology with silicon and glass substrates. A thermophoretic separation experiment using fluorescent polymer beads/water dispersion was successfully performed by the developed device., 日本機械学会

JOURNAL OF THE PHYSICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN, Apr. 2015, [Reviewed] - A constrained variational model for radial symmetry breaking
Shinya Watanabe, Lead, A simple constrained minimization problem with an integral constraint describes a symmetry breaking of a circular front around a point source. As a single control parameter, the total flux φ from the source, is varied, apparently polygonal solutions with an arbitrary number of corners m are shown to bifurcate from the circular solution. Our asymptotic analysis shows that the branches with m ≥ 3 bifurcate supercritically at φ = π(m2 + 2) and continue as φ → ∞ whereas those with m = 1 or 2 bifurcate subcritically and are terminated at φ = 3π and 4π, respectively. The second variation can be evaluated directly for the circular state which is proven to be the minimizing solution only up to φ = 3π., College of Science, Ibaraki University
