  • Effects of preventing a temperature decrease during winter on reproduction of male small-egged Kajika, Cottus pollux SE
Yasunori Koya; Ryoji Fujii; Daisuke Tahara; Hidenobu Yambe; Takaharu Natsumeda, Last, To investigate the effects of preventing temperature decrease on the reproductive activity of the male cold-water teleost, Cottus pollux SE, testicular development, serum 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) levels, and physiological responses associated with nesting behavior (i.e., elevation of serum 11-KT levels and accumulation of urine in the urinary bladder) were observed from November to January. Specifically, males were exposed to three different cooling regimes (control, 16 to 6 °C; H1, 16 to 11 °C; H2, 16 to 14 °C), and the results were compared. In addition, the effects of temperature on male reproductive behavior were also clarified. At higher water temperature regimes, the rate of testicular development and serum 11-KT levels were both higher from November to mid-December than from mid-December to January. However, the results showed that high water temperature regimes in the coldest period of winter did not suppress spermatogenesis completely. Conversely, the physiological responses to nesting were affected by high water temperatures, with serum 11-KT levels increasing and urine accumulation in the urinary bladder being suppressed. Furthermore, frequencies of two behaviors associated with nesting, i.e., body undulation and face displays, were also suppressed under high water temperatures (~ 14 °C) compared with normal temperatures (~ 7 °C) during the breeding season. Based on the physiological and behavioral responses to nesting, findings showed that preventing a water temperature decrease during winter suppresses reproductive activity in Cottus pollux SE., Springer

  • Distinct foraging modes between two stream-dwelling benthic fishes, torrent catfish Liobagrus reini and Japanese fluvial sculpin Cottus pollux (large-egg type)
Takaharu Natsumeda; Hiromu Ogawa; Osamu Katano, Lead, We observed feeding behavior, movement, focal point utilization, and diet of two stream-dwelling benthic fishes, torrent catfish Liobagrus reini and Japanese fluvial sculpin Cottus pollux (large-egg type), under experimental conditions. Torrent catfish are benthos feeders, cruise widely, and prey exclusively on chironomid and trichopteran larvae. Japanese fluvial sculpin are drift and benthos feeders, ambush prey, and select for ephemeropteran nymphs in addition to chironomid and trichopteran larvae. The different foraging modes of these two species might enable their sympatric distribution when their diets overlap., SPRINGER JAPAN KK

  • Environmental and biotic characteristics to discriminate farm ponds with and without exotic largemouth bass and bluegill in western Japan
Takaharu Natsumeda; Noriko Takamura; Megumi Nakagawa; Yasuro Kadono; Tetsuo Tanaka; Hiromune Mitsuhashi, Lead, We compared the environmental and biotic characteristics of farm ponds with and without the invasive fish, largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), and bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus), with varying degrees of aquatic vegetation cover in western Japan. Redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that aquatic vegetation cover and pond area were significant environmental variables in explaining the variance in aquatic organisms. Aquatic vegetation cover predominantly affected Odonata and Hemiptera larvae, and the native cyprinid, Hemigrammocypris rasborella, while the pond area mainly affected the two exotic fishes (largemouth bass and bluegill), Viviparidae, Oligocheata, Ephemeroptera, and chironomid larvae. In the RDA biplot for aquatic organisms, the RDA1 axis appeared to separate the exotic fish group (bluegill, largemouth bass, Gammaridae, Oligochaeta, Viviparidae, Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera, and chironomid larvae) from the native fish group (H. rasborella, Oryzias latipes, Rhinogobius sp., Odonata, shrimps, and Hemiptera larvae). The best path model results indicated that the presence of piscivorous largemouth bass had a significantly negative effect on native fish numbers; largemouth bass also had a positive indirect effect on benthic organism numbers. Our data suggest that the depletion of native fishes via top-down effects by exotic largemouth bass may indirectly increase the number of benthic organisms as a result of trophic-cascading effects., SPRINGER JAPAN KK

  • Immigration of the common cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo hanedae into inland areas of the northern part of Nagano Prefecture, eastern Japan, inferred from stable isotopes of carbon, nitrogen and sulphur
Takaharu Natsumeda; Hiroyuki Sakano; Tetsuya Tsuruta; Kayoko Kameda; Kei'ichiro Iguchi, Lead, Immigration of common cormorants Phalacrocorax carbo hanedae into inland areas might result in substantial loss of inland fish stocks due to predation. We estimated the immigration and habitat of piscivorous common cormorants into inland areas using 3 stable isotope values (delta C-13, delta N-15 and delta S-34) collected from 24 cormorant specimens and 9 grey heron (Ardea cinerea) specimens for comparison; Samples were collected (shot) during the winter and spring of 2007-2008 in the northern part of Nagano Prefecture, an inland area of eastern Japan. Variation in carbon and nitrogen isotope values between cormorant individuals was low in the liver and in the pectoralis major muscle, with a rapid rate of turnover. Relatively higher variation in the primary and secondary feathers, the values of which reflect a moulting period, suggest inter-individual variation in habitat use and prey items during and after summer moulting. Predicted mean isotope values of cormorant prey, calculated from fractionation values of the primary feathers, did not support littoral feeding of the cormorants after moulting. Based on empirical measurement of delta S-34 thresholds, with > 10 aEuro degrees being indicative of tissue grown in a marine environment, the percentage of individuals feeding in seawater- dominated areas after moulting was only 16.7 % in cormorants and 0 % in grey herons, suggesting the majority of cormorants examined inhabited inland areas and preyed upon inland fish stock after summer moulting., SPRINGER JAPAN KK

  • Variation in morphological characteristics of Japanese fluvial sculpin related to different environmental conditions in a single river system in eastern Japan
Takaharu Natsumeda; Tetsuya Tsuruta; Hirohiko Takeshima; Satoshi Awata; Kei'ichiro Iguchi, Lead, Stream fish with low mobility are often restricted to a narrow range of a stream course, and their morphological characters tend to be affected substantially by the environmental conditions of their habitat. We examined the relationships between environmental conditions and morphological characters of Japanese fluvial sculpin (Cottus pollux), a small, benthic fish with low mobility, at seven tributaries of the same river system in eastern Japan. Discriminant function analysis (DFA) indicated significant morphological differences in sculpins amongst the seven tributaries, and over 80% of individuals were classified correctly in each tributary. The strong positive correlation/loadings on the first discriminant function (DF1: 49.9% of total variation) were anterior caudal peduncle depth (0.436) and caudal peduncle truss (0.387), both of which could be regarded as an attribute of caudal peduncle depth. The second discriminant function (DF2: 16.5% of total variation) had a high negative loading for distance between the posterior first dorsal fin and anterior anal fin (-0.454), which could be regarded as an attribute of body depth. Correlation analysis indicated that sculpin tended to have a lower caudal peduncle depth under faster bottom current velocities at the tributary scale. Individuals deviating substantially from the centroid of DF2 in each tributary had a poorer body condition. Our results suggest the possibility of changes in the morphological characters of Japanese fluvial sculpin in relation to environmental conditions even at the tributary scale within the same river system., WILEY-BLACKWELL

  • Diet composition and food intake of two competitive heron species: the Grey Heron and the Great Egret
Hamao Shoji; Akiba Toru; Natsumeda Takaharu, Last, The Grey Heron Ardea cinerea and the Great Egret A. alba are assumed to have competitive relationship for food resource because of their overlapped feeding habitats. We observed their feeding behaviours in rice paddy fields in central Honshu, Japan. The main diets of both species were pond snails Sinotaia quadrata histrica and weather loach Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, suggesting competition for foods between the herons. Although the frequencies of peck trials and successful pecks were higher in Great Egrets than in Grey Herons, food intake had a tendency to be greater in Grey Herons than in Great Egrets. This inverse result must be caused by the higher proportion of small pond snails in Great Egret diets. Great Egrets frequently peck and obtain smaller foods, and Grey Herons use infrequent chance to obtain larger foods, which may relax the competition in food between the species., Japan Bird Research Association

  • Variation in life-history traits of male Japanese fluvial sculpin Cottus pollux in relation to nest abundance along a stream course
Takaharu Natsumeda; Masahide Yuma; Michio Hori, Lead, Life-history theory predicts the occurrence of variation in the life-history traits of fish populations under different environmental conditions; however, most studies have focused on such variation between geographically separated populations. We compared breeding characteristics and life-history traits of the Japanese fluvial sculpin (Cottus pollux), a bottom-dwelling nest-holding fish, between two adjacent sites sub-divided by a weir along a stream course in central Japan. Males in the area with a lower abundance of nest sites reached sexual maturity at an earlier age and had a shorter life span than males in the area with sufficient nest abundance. Size-dependent male reproduction was found only in areas with a shortage of nest sites, supporting the assumption of competitive exclusion among males for nests. Females matured at the same age in both sites with no differences in age-specific growth rates and mortality. Our results provide evidence for life-history variation in age and size at maturity and age-specific mortality schedule of males in nest-holding fishes in a single stream population via different sexual selection regimes related to differences in nest abundance between sites., SPRINGER

  • Diurnal bottom feeding of predator fish strengthens trophic cascades to benthic algae in experimental flow-through pools
    O. Katano; T. Natsumeda; N. Suguro, Mechanisms that determine the strength of trophic cascades from fish to benthic algae via algivorous invertebrates in stream communities have not been clarified. Using seven fish species, we tested the hypothesis that the interspecific variation of predatory behavior of fishes affects the strength of trophic cascades in experimental streams. One or two species of fish were introduced into flow-through pools of 2.5 m(2) and the abundances of benthic invertebrates and algae were monitored. Pike gudgeon, a diurnal benthic feeder, triggered a strong trophic cascade but masu salmon, a diurnal drift feeder, did not have a cascading effect. Japanese dace, which is both a diurnal benthic and drift feeder, increased the algal biomass, but the nocturnal benthic feeder cut-tailed bullhead had little cascading effect. The diurnal benthic feeder silver crucian carp also had a cascading effect, but no trophic cascade was triggered either by Asian pond loach or by Japanese common catfish, both of which are nocturnal benthic feeders. Thus, diurnal benthic fish exerted a stronger cascading effect than diurnal drift feeders or nocturnal fish. The combination of two fish species enhanced the per-capita strength of trophic cascades, probably because one of the two species, the benthic feeder, preyed on more invertebrates than in the single-species pools., SPRINGER JAPAN KK

  • Predation by Zacco platypus, Tribolodon hokonensis and Gymnogobius petschiliensis on Ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis) larvae under light and dark experimental conditions
Tsuruta Tesuya; Koike Ryoto; Takeshima Hirohiko; Natsumeda Takaharu; Iguchi Keiichirou, This study aims to evaluate the predation pressure during daytime and nighttime on larvae of Ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis, by comparing the number consumed by three predatory fish species between light and dark experimental conditions. Four of five individuals for Zacco platypus consumed more Ayu larvae in the light condition than in the dark condition. The number of Ayu larvae consumed by all four individuals for Tribolodon hakonensis in the light condition was about twice that in the dark condition. For Gymnogobius petschiliensis, three of five individuals ate few Ayu larvae, one showed a higher and the other showed a lower feeding activity under the light condition. Because two out of three predators showed a consistently higher feeding activity on Ayu larvae under the light condition, we suggest that the diurnal predation pressure is a selective factor for not only nocturnal drift in Ayu larvae but also concentrating hatching after sunset., 日本魚類学会
