MACROMOLECULES, 27 Jan. 2026 - Time-of-flight small-angle neutron scattering instrument ib -SAS at the compact accelerator-based neutron source RANS, dedicated to education and industrial use
Satoshi Koizumi; Yohei Noda; Hideki Izunome; Yosie Otake; Tomohiro Kobayashi; Kunihiro Fujita; Chihiro Iwamoto, We report the construction and performance of the small-angle neutron scattering instrument ib -SAS at the compact accelerator-based neutron source RANS, RIKEN, Wako, Japan. With this instrument, we aim to increase the opportunities for using neutrons for university education and/or industrial use ( e.g. screening for inferior goods). A time-of-flight method, combined with pulsed neutrons with a wide wavelength band from 1 to 10 Å, is necessary to compensate for the weak luminescence of the compact neutron source. Further enhancement has been achieved by employing a multi-pinhole collimator as a converging-beam device; 81 (= 9 × 9) pinholes select thermal neutrons emitted from the large surface area of a solid polyethylene (PE) moderator and produce a focused beam on the detector. To reduce the background originating from stray neutrons in the beam hall of RANS, we keep the path of small-angle scattering in a vacuum and cover it by a thick shield of Cd plates and PE blocks containing B 4 C powder. To cover a wide range of length scales d [or wavenumber q (= 2π/ d )], three detector blocks (small-angle, wide-angle and backward scattering) were installed on the ib -SAS instrument. The small-angle scattering obtained for glassy carbon and sodium dodecyl sulfate micelle solutions is quantitatively compared with that obtained from the iMATERIA instrument (BL20) at J-PARC, Tokai, with respect to the covered q range and the measurement efficiency and statistics. Similarly to scanning electron microscopy, the SANS instrument at RANS was used to provide a map image showing the water distribution in a mortar plate, the bottom of which was immersed in water. The incoherent scattering from hydrogen was determined and plotted as a function of height., International Union of Crystallography (IUCr)

Macromolecules, 19 Sep. 2025, [Reviewed] - Solid‐State Luminescence of Whitened Lignin in Clay Matrix with Prolonged Fluorescence Lifetime and Controllable Color
Kazuhiro Shikinaka; Asami Suzuki; Yuichiro Otsuka; Yohei Noda, This study explores the luminescence properties of whitened lignin in organic solvent dispersions and self‐standing films composed of clay nanosheets. Lignin whitened by modifying bulky substituents in a polarity‐controlled solvent exhibits luminescence in liquid and solid media via electronic transitions parallel to the molecular plane of aromatic structures in lignin. Remarkably, the fluorescence lifetime of the whitened lignin is extended significantly from nanosecond order to submillisecond order (an increase of ≈ 105 times) by transitioning the dispersing medium from a liquid organic solvent to a solid clay nanosheet. Additionally, the luminescence properties of the whitened lignin in the clay nanosheet, such as the fluorescence color, can be tuned by altering the chemical structure of the whitened lignin and the clay nanosheet. This study underscores the potential of utilizing polymers derived from plants and minerals as functional materials to support a realization of decarbonized society. The observed luminescence behavior of lignin, a plant‐based aromatic polymer, within self‐standing films made from clay nanosheets, a mineral‐based inorganic polymer, highlights its promising application in photofunctional materials., Wiley
ChemNanoMat, 29 Aug. 2025, [Reviewed] - Development of Nano-sized Graphene Flowers as Neutron Reflectors -Intensify neutron beam caused by coherent scattering-
Makoto Teshigawara; Yujiro Ikeda; Kazuo Muramatsu; Koichi Sutani; Koichi Kimijima; Masafumi Fukuzumi; Yohei Noda; Satoshi Koizumi; Yuji Kawamura; Koichi Saruta; Yoshie Otake, The nano-sized graphene with a petal and seed-like structure, may induce neutron coherent scattering. We have studied a possible effect according to which the increase of the number of graphene seed-like structures produces an enhancement of the coherent scattering. To evaluate this, we focused on Raman spectra that characterize the stacking structure, crystal irregularities, and defects promoted by graphene growth. By focusing this information, we tried to find parameters related to the nano-sized structure of graphene, and explored whether they can be related to the coherent scattering. As a result, it is suggested that the increase of the G/D ratio and the decrease of the G/2D ratio in the Raman spectra correlate strongly with the increase of the coherent scattering., Canadian Science Publishing
Canadian Journal of Physics, 27 Aug. 2025, [Reviewed] - Development of Nano-sized Graphene Flowers as Neutron Reflectors - Structural Control of Nano-sized Graphene and Application as Neutron Reflectors -

Graphene, which has a sp2 carbon crystal structure, has a larger van der Waals force compared to sp3 carbon crystal structure such as nano-diamonds. Additionally, the bonding force between carbon atoms in graphene is strong, which makes it easier to mold into a large block and plate and to adapt to higher radiation fields. However, graphene is easily to cause aggregation due to its large van der Waals force, making it difficult to form a nano-sized three-dimensional structure. To address this problem, we focused on the hot isostatic pressing (HIP) method, which uses resin powder as the raw material and produces vapor-phase grown graphene through HIP treatment. We have reported a method for producing free-standing, three-dimensional graphene called “graphene flower” made of nano-sized graphene and a method for controlling the nano-size of graphene. Additionally, we presented a prototype of a graphene neutron reflector and measured the coherent scattering of neutrons by graphene for the first time. In this paper, we will report on the optimization of the graphene manufacturing method using the HIP process to improve the coherent scattering performance of neutrons., Canadian Science Publishing
Canadian Journal of Physics, 01 Aug. 2025, [Reviewed] - Development of nanosized graphene material for neutron intensity enhancement below cold neutron energy
Makoto Teshigawara; Yujiro Ikeda; Kazuo Muramatsu; Koichi Sutani; Masafumi Fukuzumi; Yohei Noda; Satoshi Koizumi; Koichi Saruta; Yoshie Otake, We have been developing nanosized graphene, called graphene flower, as a material that induces coherent scattering very cold neutrons. Previous experiments have found that the seed part of the graphene flower is more effective than the petal part in increasing the coherent scattering. Based on these results, we found that further modification of the graphene flower to increase the seed portion increased the total cross-section, although it did not reach the level of nanodiamonds., IOS Press

Acta Crystallographica Section A, Aug. 2021, [Reviewed] - Advanced Small-Angle Scattering Instrument Available in the Tokyo Area. Time-Of-Flight, Small-Angle Neutron Scattering Developed on the iMATERIA Diffractometer at the High Intensity Pulsed Neutron Source J-PARC
S. Koizumi; Y. Noda; T. Maeda; T. Inada; S. Ueda; T. Fujisawa; H. Izunome; R. A. Robinson; and H. Frielinghaus, A method of time-of-flight, small-angle neutron scattering (TOF-SANS) has been developed based on the iMATERIA powder diffractometer at BL20, of the Materials and Life Sciences Facility (MLF) at the high-intensity proton accelerator (J-PARC). A large-area detector for SANS, which is composed of triple-layered 3He tube detectors, has a hole at its center in order to release a direct beam behind and to detect ultra-small-angle scattering. As a result, the pulsed-neutron TOF method enables us to perform multiscale observations covering 0.003 < q (Å−1) < 40 (qmax/qmix = 1.3 × 104) and to determine the static structure factor S(q) and/or form factor P(q) under real-time and in-situ conditions. Our challenge, using unique sample accessories of a super-conducting magnet and polarized neutron, is dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) for contrast variation, especially for industrial use. To reinforce conventional SANS measurements with powder materials, grazing-incidence small-angle neutron scattering (GISANS) or reflectivity is also available on the iMATERIA instrument., MDPI

Y. Noda; H. Izunome; T. Maeda; T. Inada; S. Ueda; and S. Koizumi, Lead, An area detector with a central hole structure was built up for small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) on the iMATERIA instrument at Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). Linear position-sensitive detector tubes filled with 3He gas were arranged in three layers leaving a central hole. As a result of the calibration process, a SANS measurement with wide q-range from 0.007 Å−1 to 4.3 Å−1 was achieved in double-frame operation, supplying neutrons with wavelengths from 1 Å to 10 Å. As a merit of this central hole structure, neutron transmission can be measured simultaneously to reduce experimental time and effort. This is ideal for time-resolved studies, in which the sample transmission can be time-dependent, throughout the whole experiment. Additionally, the data storage system in ‘event mode’ format provides an excellent platform for such time-resolved experiments., MDPI

Tamura, Metal-free magnetic mixed micelles (mean diameter: 16 nm) composed of biocompatible surfactant Tween 80 and hydrophobic pyrrolidine-N-oxyl radical were prepared by mixing them in phosphate-buffered saline. The magnetic mixed micelles were characterized by dynamic light scattering and small angle neutron scattering measurements. The stability of the micelles is found to depend on the length of alkyl side chain in the nitroxide compounds and degree of unsaturation in the hydrophobic chain in the surfactant. The size of the mixed micelle can be tuned by changing the molar ratio of Tween 80 and nitroxyl radical. In view of theranostic application of the micelle, the cytotoxicity and stability in a physiological environment was investigated; the mixed micelle exhibited no cytotoxicity, high colloidal stability and high resistance towards reduction by large excess ascorbic acid. The in vitro and in vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed sufficient contrast enhancement in the proton longitudinal relaxation time (T 1) weighted images. In addition, hydrophobic fluorophores and an anticancer drug are stably encapsulated in the mixed micelles and showed fluorescence (FL) upon reduction by ascorbic acid and cytotoxicity to cancer cells, respectively. For example, the paclitaxel-loaded mixed micelles efficiently suppressed cancer cell growth. Furthermore, they were found to give higher MRI contrast (higher r 1 value) in vitro than the micelles without paclitaxel. The magnetic mixed micelles presented here are promising theranostic agents in nanomedicine due to their high biocompatibility and high resistivity towards reduction as well as functioning as a drug carrier in therapy and MR or FL imaging probe in diagnosis., IOP publishing
