  • 〔Major achievements〕Image-to-Image Subpixel Registration Based on Template Matching of Road Network Extracted by Deep Learning
    Shuhei Hikosaka; Hideyuki Tonooka, Last, The vast digital archives collected by optical remote sensing observations over a long period of time can be used to determine changes in the land surface and this information can be very useful in a variety of applications. However, accurate change extraction requires highly accurate image-to-image registration, which is especially true when the target is urban areas in high-resolution remote sensing images. In this paper, we propose a new method for automatic registration between images that can be applied to noisy images such as old aerial photographs taken with analog film, in the case where changes in man-made objects such as buildings in urban areas are extracted from multitemporal high-resolution remote sensing images. The proposed method performs image-to-image registration by applying template matching to road masks extracted from images using a two-step deep learning model. We applied the proposed method to multitemporal images, including images taken more than 36 years before the reference image. As a result, the proposed method achieved registration accuracy at the subpixel level, which was more accurate than the conventional area-based and feature-based methods, even for image pairs with the most distant acquisition times. The proposed method is expected to provide more robust image-to-image registration for differences in sensor characteristics, acquisition time, resolution and color tone of two remote sensing images, as well as to temporal variations in vegetation and the effects of building shadows. These results were obtained with a road extraction model trained on images from a single area, single time period and single platform, demonstrating the high versatility of the model. Furthermore, the performance is expected to be improved and stabilized by using images from different areas, time periods and platforms for training., {MDPI} {AG}

  • In-Flight Radiometric Calibration of Compact Infrared Camera (CIRC) Instruments Onboard ALOS-2 Satellite and International Space Station
Hideyuki Tonooka; Michito Sakai; Ayaka Kumeta; Koji Nakau, The Compact Infrared Camera (CIRC) instruments onboard the Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 (ALOS-2) and the Calorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) attached to the International Space Station are satellite-borne 2D-array thermal infrared cameras for technical demonstrations in fields such as forest fire monitoring, volcano monitoring, and heat island analysis. Since they have the characteristics of low cost and low power consumption and have no onboard calibrator such as a blackbody or shutter, in-flight calibration should be performed by vicarious calibration (VC) and cross-calibration (CC). In this study, we determined the recalibration coefficients for both of the CIRC instruments as a function of time based on VC experiments in Lake Kasumigaura (Japan) and Railroad Valley Playa (USA), VC with telemetry data from three lakes in Japan and the USA, and CC with imagers onboard two geostationary satellites (MTSAT-2 and Himawari-8). As a result, the derived recalibration coefficients improved the accuracy of the ground-testing-based radiance remarkably in both of the CIRC instruments, suggesting that the recalibrated radiance can satisfy the target accuracy of CIRC, given as 2 K at 300 K. These coefficients, as a function of time, will be applied to all CIRC images by reprocessing planned in the near future., MDPI AG

  • ASTER Cloud Coverage Assessment and Mission Operations Analysis Using Terra/MODIS Cloud Mask Products
Hideyuki Tonooka; Tetsushi Tachikawa, Since the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) instrument cannot detect clouds accurately for snow-covered or nighttime images due to a lack of spectral bands, Terra/MODIS cloud mask (MOD35) products have been alternatively used in cloud assessment for all ASTER images. In this study, we evaluated ASTER cloud mask images generated from MOD35 products and used them to analyze the mission operations of ASTER. In the evaluation, ASTER cloud mask images from different MOD35 versions (Collections 5, 6, and 6.1) showed a large discrepancy in low- or high-latitude areas, and the rate of ASTER scenes with a high uncertain-pixel rate (≥30%) showed to be 2.2% in daytime and 12.0% in nighttime. In the visual evaluation with ASTER browse images, about 2% of cloud mask images showed some problems such as mislabeling and artifacts. In the mission operations analysis, the cloud avoidance function implemented in the ASTER observation scheduler showed a decrease in the mean cloud coverage (MCC) and an increase in the rate of clear scenes by 10% to 15% in each. Although 19-year-old time-series of MCC in five areas showed weather-related fluctuations such as the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), they indicated a small percent reduction in MCC by enhancement of the cloud avoidance function in April 2012. The global means of the number of clear ASTER scenes were 15.7 and 6.6 scenes in daytime and nighttime, respectively, and those of the success rate were 33.3% and 40.4% in daytime and nighttime, respectively. These results are expected to contribute not only to the ASTER Project but also to other optical sensor projects., MDPI AG

  • Evaluation of the influence of cloud contamination in satellite image matching by the Phase-Only-Correlation method
    A. Kato; and H. Tonooka, Last,

If the Phase-Only-Correlation (POC) method, known as an accurate and robust algorithm for image matching, is applied to a satellite image with clouds, only clear areas after cloud screening can be input. However, if the cloud screening is not perfect, the method will be applied to a cloud-contaminated image. For example, it is difficult to perform accurate cloud screening for images created using JAXA's ALOS-2/Compact Infrared Camera (CIRC) with only a single thermal infrared (TIR) band, and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) cloud mask products are less accurate for some types of surfaces. However, the robustness of the POC method in cloud-contaminated satellite images has not been fully investigated. Thus, in the present paper, we evaluated it, particularly for TIR images, using two approaches. In the first approach, we placed various simulated clouds on actual CIRC images, and evaluated the accuracy of the POC method under cloud conditions that varied in terms of coverage and position. As a result, the gap estimation error was within 0.03 pixels, although the image-to-image similarity (alpha value) decreased and the error increased with increasing cloud coverage. This approach was also applied to Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) near-infrared (NIR) images and showed a similar tendency and a gap estimation error of 0.005 pixels or less. In the second approach, we used cloud-contaminated CIRC images as target images and ASTER/TIR images as base images, and the gaps between the CIRC and ASTER images were evaluated by the POC method. As a result, the gap estimation error was somewhat larger than that in the first approach, but was within 0.7 pixels. In conclusion, the POC method is robust against cloud contamination on satellite images if an error of 1 pixel is acceptable. This is useful information for some applications such as automatic satellite image registration and automatic geolocation validation.

  • Radiometric calibration of thermal infrared bands of terra ASTER and Landsat-7 ETM+ using hot ground targets
    T. Nonaka; T. Matsunaga; Y. Sawabe; M. Moriyama; and H. Tonooka, To confirm the accuracy of on-board calibration (OBC) of the thermal infrared bands of Terra ASTER and Landsat-7 ETM+, vicarious calibration (VC) and cross calibration (CC) methods were proposed and applied to field and airborne data. For VC at Salton Sea and Railroad Valley, US, ground temperature was measured in large areas with homogenious temperature and emissivity during overpasses of these satellites. Radiance-based calibration of ASTER TIR was conducted using a multispectral radiometer with the same spectral coverage as ASTER TIR. For CC at Lake Tahoe, airborne MASTER data were acquired when these satellites passed. We proposed a method in which the spectral difference between the satellite and the airborne sensor is considered. Atmospheric parameters were determined by MODTRAN4 from atmospheric profiles obtained with the radiosonde launched during experiments. Calibration results show that the radiant temperature of ASTER TIR (Level 1 B Ver. 0.4) is 0.2-1.3°C lower than those of VC/CC at high temperature (15-40°C). ETM+ (Level 1 R using calibration coefficients determined before December 20, 2000) estimates the radiant temperature 3°C (except in Railroad Valley) higher than VC/CC. VC/CC accuracy was better than 1°C (radiometric calibration requirement of ASTER TIR at 270-340K)., The Remote Sensing Society of Japan

    K. Arai; K. J. Thome; S. Tsuchida; K. Maekawa; and H. Tonooka, Early results from the vicarious calibration activities for ASTER/VNIR and SWIR in Japan are described. An influence due to solar irradiance models on the vicarious calibration for visible to short wave infrared region is clarified. Also vicarious calibration activities are introduced together with the radiometric calibration coefficients with vicarious calibration data. EOS standard solar irradiance model of WRC is compared with the widely used MODTRAN 4.0 based solar irradiance. The percent difference both is below 1 % for the visible to near infrared region while that for short wave infrared region is +3.1 to -10%. The calibration coefficients are compared with the onboard calibration lamp data derived coefficients. Both show a good coincidence. As a conclusion, it is found that vicarious calibration accuracy in the visible to near infrared wavelength region is around ±4% while that in the short wave infrared region is approximately ±15%., The Remote Sensing Society of Japan

  • Introduction of water vapor dependent coefficients to multichannel algorithms
    H. Tonooka, The split-window algorithm produces a large error under humid conditions because of the dependence of each coefficient on the water vapor amount. The water vapor dependent (WVD) algorithm proposed by Francois et al. (1996) reduces such error by expressing each coefficient as a quadratic function of the water vapor amount. In the present article, the concept of the WVD algorithm is applied; to the multichannel (MC) algorithm which gives the surface temperature with the linear combination of the brightness temperatures measured at N channels; and to the extended multichannel (EMC) algorithm which gives the surface brightness temperature at each channel with the same combination. New algorithms named a MC/WVD and an EMC/WVD algorithms, as well as the WVD algorithm, express each coefficient as a quadratic function of the water vapor amount: in actual processing, a global data assimilation system, a sounder and the other data source provide the water vapor amount used in each coefficient. As the results of a simulation analysis with 964 atmospheric profiles, the rms errors of the new algorithms are showed to be 0.2-0.3 K smaller than those of the old algorithms under the conditions of sea observations. Particularly, the EMC/WVD algorithm is showed to be so robust against the emissivity uncertainty as to be applicable to land observations; the rms errors of the algorithm for AVHRR channel 4 and ASTER channel 12 are less than 1 K under the surface conditions including 97 terrestrial materials. And it is also showed that the land surface temperature (LST) offset (LST minus surface air temperature) is an important error factor for the new algorithms as well as the old algorithms., The Remote Sensing Society of Japan

  • Global distribution characteristics of transmittance, path radiance and sky radiance in the thermal infrared region based on NCEP/GDAS products
    H. Tonooka; and R. Nemoto, Global distribution characteristics of atmospheric effects in the thermal infrared region are important for investigators developing atmospheric correction algorithms. In the present article, global maps of the atmospheric effect parameters (transmittance, path radiance and sky radiance) for AVHRR channel 4 are created by the radiative transfer calculations combined with the NCEP Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS) products for July and January, and their statistical characteristics are evaluated.
Firstly, it is mentioned based on a general view of the global maps that the atmospheric effect parameters are not so different between July and January in the Southern Hemisphere, whereas they are much different in the Northern Hemisphere. And then, it is shown that the global distributions of these parameters can be approximately expressed as a composition of two different distributions ; one is related with the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), and another is related with the other zones. The global distributions are, therefore, divided to five zones based on the latitude ; the ITCZ, two transition zones of both Hemispheres, and two high latitude zones of both Hemispheres. The results demonstrate that the spatial variations of the atmospheric effect parameters are very small in the high latitude zones but very large in the ITCZ. This fact means that a local atmospheric correction algorithm is better than a global algorithm for the high latitude zones and we should consider such large spatial variations of the atmospheric effect parameters in developing an atmospheric correction algorithm used for the ITCZ.
In the final part of this article, it is mentioned that we need to evaluate how advantageous the approach using global algorithms is in comparing with the approach using a linkage of local algorithms., The Remote Sensing Society of Japan

  • Influences of atmospheric correction error and its reduction method
    H. Tonooka; S. Rokugawa; and Y. Ishii, In the temperature and emissivity (T/E) separation methods for ASTER thermal infrared multispectral data, influences of the atmospheric correction error as well as those of the empirical assumption error have tc be considered because no atmospheric profile will be observed simultaneously in the current plan. Thus, the sensitivity of T/E separation methods to the atmospheric correction error and the empirical assumption error is showed to be a function of atmospheric parameters, land surface parameters and wavelength and evaluated by LOWTRAN 7.
Considering the dependence of this sensitivity upon wavelength, a new suggestion to the application of T/E separation methods is introduced, which can reduce the influences of atmospheric correction error by the stepwise processings. The first step is to eliminate some channels relatively sensitive to the atmospheric correction error, then the second step is to calculate the temperature and the spectral emissivity of remained channels. This step is based on the empirical assumption on the emissivity of these channels. The final step is to derive the spectral emissivity of the eliminated channels using the previously obtained temperature.
In the final part of this study, the effectiveness of this approach is evaluated in the typical T/E separation method called the normalization method. The laboratory spectra of various materials are used as model data. This evaluation demonstrates the advantage of this approach, while the necessity of validity check of empirical assumption is also indicated., The Remote Sensing Society of Japan
