(Message from Researchers)
(教員からのメッセージ) Materials play critical roles in various objects. Examples include structural materials consisting of structural objects such as buildings, vehicles, machines, and so on, and functional materials constituting the essential parts of electronic, magnetic, or optical devices. Researches are going on to improve their performance or to understand the bases behind it. The possibilities of what materials can give to us are infinite. ,,Our group studies the relation between characteristics of materials and their structures in various size scales and the processes to control the structures forcusing on energy materials such as thermoelectric materials. I hope that our activities of materials researches make contributions to the improvements of the quality of human life and the accumulation of mankind's knowledge.

The lotus-type porous copper is attractive as a heat sink, because the larger heat transfer capacity is obtained as the diameter of the pore is becoming smaller. A fin model for predicting the heat transfer capacity of the lotus-type porous copper was investigated. IKEDA Teruyuki; NAKAJIMA Hideo, Lotus-type porous magnesium, in which countless small pores elongated in the solidification direction are dispersed, was fabricated by unidirectional solidification under hydrogen atmosphere. Ingots with various sets of porosities and averaged pore diameter can be obtained by controlling the pressure of hydrogen atmosphere. In the present experiments, porous magnesium ingots with porosities and averaged pore diameters in the range of 0~50% and 60~800μm were fabricated. These materials are very light weight ; porous magnesium with 50% porosity has a density of 0.87g/cm3 and floats in water. The anisotropy in tensile strength of porous magnesium was observed and it was found that the tensile strength in the direction parallel to the pores is higher than that perpendicular., Japan Foundry Engineering Society

Nakajima, We studied the elastic constants of a lotus-type porous copper, regarding it as a composite material showing hexagonal elastic symmetry with the c-axis along the longitudinal direction of the pores. We used the combination of resonance ultrasound spectroscopy and electromagnetic acoustic resonance methods to determine the elastic constants of the composite. The resulting Young's modulus E-parallel to decreases linearly and c(33) does slowly with porosity, while E-perpendicular to and c(11) drop rapidly and then slowly. Micromechanics calculations considering the elastic anisotropy of the copper matrix can reproduce the measured anisotropic elastic constants. Masumoto, The atomic structures of Zr70Ga10Ni20 amorphous alloys exhibiting a wide supercooled liquid region have been studied by the anomalous X-ray scattering (AXS) method. The local atomic structures around Zr, Ga and Ni have been determined in the amorphous samples as-quenched and annealed in the supercooled liquid region so that the atomic structure in the supercooled liquid region was compared with the one in the as-quenched state. The structural analyses and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) traces in the as-quenched and annealed samples indicate that a structural change in the environment for Zr due to annealing in the supercooled liquid region is closely related with the thermal stability in the present amorphous alloy. In the crystallized sample prepared by annealing the as-quenched amorphous alloy for a long time in a supercooled liquid region, the precipitated phases have been determined to be Zr2Ni and Zr6Ga2Ni by analyzing the energy-differential intensity profiles at Zr, Ga and Ni K absorption edges., The Japan Institute of Metals
